To think DH is being ridiculous to not eat this?

Mushroom pie with instructions on packet to cook from chilled and to defrost in the refrigerator. I'm running out of time so defrosted on counter. He found packet and is now moaning and refusing to eat it because it might give him food poisoning. AIBU to think he is being absurd?

omg Mushroom pie... I've never heard of such delight... I want one ❤️

bobbojobbo · 18/01/2021 18:31

Food poisoning is not a major cause of miscarriage because pregnant women are given a list of foods to avoid,

That's not why though. Many of those guidelines are pure nonsense. Listeria advice for example, you are told to avoid certain things which are low risk for listeria, but not told to avoid things that are higher risk for listeria.

Nochristmasbreak · 18/01/2021 18:37

I don't even defrost sausages. Shocking.

My mum once said, do you defrost dish fingers before you cook them? Since then I just put them in the cooker. In nearly 40 years I or anyone in my family have never had food poisoning.

StargazerAli · 18/01/2021 18:43

Must be his mothers fault 😁

KirstenBlest · 18/01/2021 18:44

Oh, poor @Shushpuppy, you didn't die in vain. We are now educated on how to defrost mushroom pies.

purplebunny2012 · 18/01/2021 19:04

The only thing I can think is they advise against defrosting in the open over night, so fridge is said in case you were doing it over 24 hours. I might defrost either way, and eat it

You're very strange not to defrost your sausages. Undercooked sausages are very common, and I wouldn't risk it
Lovely13 · 18/01/2021 19:17

I’ve always defrosted food on a worktop. Son went on cookery course where they told him your mother is likely to give you food poisoning! No-one has died in my house. So far....🤞

DanceItOut · 18/01/2021 19:19

Ah. He’s one of those. Yes he is being unread and annoying.

DanceItOut · 18/01/2021 19:20

That was supposed to say unreasonable not unread

Literallynoidea · 18/01/2021 19:22

This is utterly ridiculous. I defrost everything on the kitchen counter.

Bellfit · 18/01/2021 19:34

Yes!

Bookworming · 18/01/2021 19:42

Oh dear @Shushpuppy your OH doesn't sound very happy, he's not a fungi is he? Grin

Bookworming · 18/01/2021 19:43

to be honest, most men would prefer meat for a main course. Perhaps this is more the issue? My Hubby would always prefer meat to be part of the meal I cook.

The 1950s are calling you back, they need you back very urgently.

You don’t know whether or not it is, because no one has bothered to track cause of death for each reported miscarriage and then tabulate it into statistics.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/01/2021 20:03

There is a reason no one tracked the reasons for miscarriage... How do you, out of ALL the things which can cause miscarriage pick one🤷🏻 It's impossible to say whether it was because the woman eat something dodgy or because she got stressed, or for simply no reason at all or because of air pollution... You can't usually say.

Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople · 18/01/2021 20:04

@WrinklesShminkles

I've defrosted on the side for years and never had a problem. This is the usual lowest common denominator advice aimed at clueless numpties who might otherwise try to defrost a pie by putting it on a radiator 🙄
Grin

Yes. This.

TatianaBis · 18/01/2021 20:23

?? Not a question of not bothering, just that there are so many different causes that it’s not usually possible to determine. There are so many things that can go wrong with the foetus, with the mother, environmental factors etc,

If doctors were seeing high numbers of miscarriage during food poisoning you can be sure they would escalate the current standard warnings about foods to avoid.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/01/2021 20:26

@Iseestupidpeople

What does he think people did before fridges and freezers?!
When I lived at home our neighbour didn't have a fridge or freezer. She'd go to the butchers once a week and put the meat in the pantry along with the milk, butter and everything else. She did pretty well on it and was in her 90s when she died.
Sewrainbow · 18/01/2021 20:28

He's being daft! It'll be fine

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/01/2021 20:29

Well for 1st trimester, I would agree. There’s not much to work with and commonly these occur at home and very quickly. But 2nd trimester on through still births, women usually go to the hospital and are there when it’s happening. We have the medical knowledge and technology to run a few cause of death tests. Of course, would need consent of the mother. But I think enough women would consent to know why they lost their baby and that would give a good sample size of some statistical analysis and so on.

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/01/2021 20:33

If doctors were seeing high numbers of miscarriage during food poisoning

Well they wouldn’t be able to see that because as I posted earlier, studies have shown that food poisoning bad enough to kill a foetus is often asymptomatic or very mild in the mother. Mild enough that it is often dismissed as normal pregnancy related indigestion or acid reflux. The doctor would only see miscarriage. They wouldn’t think to test for food poisoning.

forgetthehousework · 18/01/2021 20:44

@iklboo

Or use fray bentos, they don't need defrosting!

AND you can use the tin as a frisbee afterwards.

Using the lid is more fun, although obviously not as dangerous as defrosting things on the side.
pollymere · 18/01/2021 21:04

I suspect he's more concerned about the pie than the poisoning.

Gobbeldegook · 18/01/2021 21:13

So much stupid here. You germaphobes are the reason food wastage is so high.
