To think DH is being ridiculous to not eat this?

Mushroom pie with instructions on packet to cook from chilled and to defrost in the refrigerator. I'm running out of time so defrosted on counter. He found packet and is now moaning and refusing to eat it because it might give him food poisoning. AIBU to think he is being absurd?

See up until last summer I would have said your dh was being a twit, however having had campylobactor food poisoning and being very ill for 5 weeks I am now of the opinion he is right where meat etc is concerned...mushrooms however...I would assume fairly safe

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/01/2021 15:52

@Viviennemary

No. Once you think something is dodgy you can't eat it. Even if it is all in the mind
😂 I've genuinely eaten a piece of cheese thinking "Hmm. Is it off? It tastes bit odd" with every bite😂 I am still not sure if it was more than "just like really properly matured". I am now confident I managed to regain my lead intestines which can digest anything.
BaronessBomburst · 17/01/2021 15:53

If the rock-hard butter is anything to go by, the side in my kitchen is fridge temperature anyway.

NiceGerbil · 17/01/2021 15:53

I tried defrosting in the fridge once and 3 years later it was still not thawed through.

So I defrost on the side and then put in fridge till cooking it. Which will be soon after.

Same as everyone else.

Show him the thread.

I also like mushrooms and pies but have never eaten one. What make is it OP?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 17/01/2021 15:55

I always assumed ‘defrost in the fridge’ meant ‘not in the microwave’. The only thing I would genuinely only ever defrost in the fridge is butter/spread - it goes too soft otherwise.

WhereYouLeftIt · 17/01/2021 15:57

"I tried defrosting in the fridge once and 3 years later it was still not thawed through."

Grin Similar. 24 hours in the fridge, it said on the box. Ha! Lies, all lies.

GabsAlot · 17/01/2021 16:00

tell him to cook for himself then

Lucieintheskye · 17/01/2021 16:00

It's only mushrooms! If it was raw chicken left uncovered on the garden table in July, then I'd understand.

Your husband is a fool, can you cook him too?

whitehat · 17/01/2021 16:00

I love mushroom pie, you are most definitely NBU for both having a mushroom pie and defrosting it on the side.

shenanigans5 · 17/01/2021 16:04

Yep. He’s being a prick.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 17/01/2021 16:04

Let him feel that the pie is still cold and give him instructions on how to find his common sense. And grip.

Soubriquet · 17/01/2021 16:05

@KirstenBlest

Don't you cook your pies from scratch?
Do you go out and scavenge for your pies when you cook from scratch?

Do you milk the cow you need to get your milk?

Do you then churn that milk for your butter and cheese?

No, of course you don’t Hmm

orangenasturtium · 17/01/2021 16:17

It should be fine if it defrosted quickly but he has a point. Some large items (eg a whole chicken) take so long to defrost that, if you leave them at room temperature, by the time the middle has defrosted the outer parts are above 5C for hours and turn into a bacterial breeding ground so they need to be defrosted in a fridge.

WeAreShiningStars · 17/01/2021 16:17

He's being ridiculous. He knows he is. Tell him he can eat something else in the house if he won't eat it, but he's not getting special pricy take out food instead.

BumbleBiscuit · 17/01/2021 16:19

Where do you guys find these weird men?

MiddleClassMother · 17/01/2021 16:21

I wouldn't defrost it on the side but if DH did it I would at least eat it! He's being unreasonable.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/01/2021 16:24

@EnolanotAlone

Same day thaw & ready to cook is fine. DH is being soft. cave men ate much worse, and they survived.

You DH just wants a fresh homemade meat pie.

If the pie thawed out and sat for over 24 hrs, then he may have a point.

Perhaps KirstenBlest can pop over and whip him one up
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/01/2021 16:27

You - two portions of mushroom pie (sounds delicious)
Him - beans on toast?

I cooked (well heated) a peshwari nan yesterday - was eating it when I spotted a green mouldy bit. Didn't eat that bit, but no ill effects.

x2boys · 17/01/2021 16:31

Mushroom pie ??? I can't quite envisage it is it in a sauce ?

midlifecrash · 17/01/2021 16:31

is it this one? www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/vegetarian-food/frys-mushroom-country-style-pie-266g

It sounds nice but the description is first person ("I am a pie...") which puts me off a bit - let us know if it's really good...

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/01/2021 16:31

No, sorry he is right. It is basic food hygiene to never defrost anything on the counter.
He is especially right if it is a chicken and mushroom pie and most mushroom pies have chicken on them.

I know many British think it’s alright to defrost on the counter, it’s culturally engrained with a dose of “never did me any harm” , but no. Basic food hygiene to never defrost on counter.

MrsClatterbuck · 17/01/2021 16:32

I have never defrosted something in the fridge. Sometimes I take it out of freezer in the morning and eat that evening or sometimes I get food out the night before and defrost overnight to eat at lunchtime or that evening shockhorror No food poisoning in 34 years. Took out a Turkey joint yesterday afternoon though did put it in fridge this morning which I sometimes do if taken out the night before and not going to be eaten until the evening. Going to cook it shortly.

grassisjeweled · 17/01/2021 16:33

Agreed. DH is like this. I just lie to him now and peel off yellow stickers.

Peanutbutterblood · 17/01/2021 16:36

This thread is a boost for me. I've never understood the instructions to defrost in the fridge, it does not work, I feel like it would take days and if that was the case there would be no point. I defrost meat cos theres nothing else in the fridge ie I need it that day. Today I got a bag of prawns out of the freezer at 630, they were defrosted at 330 so they've sat in the fridge since. 1forAll74 · 17/01/2021 16:36

There are lots of people, men and women, who are iffy and quirky about the eating of defrosted,or defrosting food stuffs. I would eat your pie, as not bothered about food poisoning, unless it's really gone off stuff.
