To ask which film couples you feel wouldn't last long?

So many films end with a loved up couple, few would last the distance.
Here's my take:
Ariel and Eric (little mermaid): she would miss her merfamily (strange as they are) and it would be a massive culture shock for her. He'd get annoyed that she didn't understand Danish aristocracy and social protocol. She's 16 ffs! She'd realise there were plenty more men with legs out there, it wouldn't end well.
There must be loads.

Jack and Rose. I think back on dry land she wouldnt be happy with slumming it.

GlitchStitch · 17/01/2021 12:21

OP you should watch this-

ChessieFL · 17/01/2021 12:23

Johnny and Baby from Dirty Dancing. She would go off to college and it would fizzle out.

Sparklesocks · 17/01/2021 12:24

The Holiday. Don’t see how the long distance is going to work unless half of each couple decides to up sticks and cross the Atlantic - which seems unlikely when everyone has lovely jobs/homes etc.

HOkieCOkie · 17/01/2021 12:25

The little mermaid has several sequels and her daughter melody chooses to go live in the sea.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/01/2021 12:28

I was coming on to say johnny and baby from dirty dancing.

Definite summer fling that one. In the "off season" he would have gone back to painting houses or whatever, and she would have gone off to college. No more dancing, no more secrecy...boring

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 12:28

I know Sateen is dead at the end anyway but I’m not sure her and Christian would have lasted, penniless and on the run, her dragging her birdcage along, across Europe. While he was holed up trying to write his masterpiece she’d inevitably fall back into her tried and tested ways to make money, which would drive him nuts and mad with jealousy, and the whole thing would start all over again. Perhaps she’d have got a part in a chorus line or something in London, starting at the bottom of the pile again while trying to work her way up to a lead part, but they’d have been dirt poor and living in one room in a slum at the Docks, and even though they really loved each other, she’d miss the comfortable and sumptuous surroundings the Elephant provided even if she did have to sleep with random men, because she was the star of the show and could at least blot most of it out with champagne.

Maria and Captain Von Trapp. After a while I think she would start ruminating about how
A) He was a real dick to her initially and
B) He sacked off the Baronness pretty easily

I think she would stay for three children but would.grow increasingly resentful over the years

CutToChase · 17/01/2021 12:28

*For the children

KumquatSalad · 17/01/2021 12:28

One of the things the more recent Star Wars films got right was that there was no way in hell Han and Leia were going to last long term. He was definitely going to bugger off leaving her with all the responsibilities.

Robbybobtail · 17/01/2021 12:30

Oh yes, I agree with all of these so far.

Also what about Ana and Christian from 50 shades? Don't they get married and have a kid? Things would soon cool off in the red room of pain when Ana isn't get her 8 hours and her nips are red raw after being up breastfeeding all night ("not tonight dear, I have a headache") and pervy Christian with his penchant for s&m would be jetting off on regular "business trips" to get his kicks.

erm they where married for 20 years and buried side by side!
CagneyNYPD · 17/01/2021 12:32

Agreed on Johnny and Frances from DD. They would be v intense for the first year or so but she would outgrow him. Frances would then build her own stellar career, marry a surgeon and have a beautiful home in the Hamptons. Johnny would open a small dance school in the Mid West.

Another couple would be Fran and Scott from Strictly Ballroom. She would soon tire of his ego.

Enko · 17/01/2021 12:32

Love actually The Prime minister and the girl from Brixton played by Hugo Grant and Martine McC. Also the Girl the pop star is with Grin at the end

Four weddings Hugo and Andie can't see how that would work. Also his x Henrietta married the dude she dated after Hugo and her originally had split up cant se that working.

TramaDollface · 17/01/2021 12:33

Prett woman - she would have been dumped after one faux pas too many and he wouldn’t be able to Cope with the social disapproval

CutToChase · 17/01/2021 12:34

Rhett and Scarlett: I know they break up and I think it was for the best. They needed simpler people, both of them. She would definitely have turned to the drink, and he would have started coming home much less often.

Robbybobtail · 17/01/2021 12:34

Maria and Captain Von Trapp

I see your point, but the above were a real-life couple and I believe lived happily ever after!

CutToChase · 17/01/2021 12:35

Never knew that re Maria and the Captain!

PicsInRed · 17/01/2021 12:35

Pretty Woman. She would never be accepted by his society, she would be miserable and any kids they had would be reminded of her background daily. "Doors to manual", writ large.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 12:37

I agree with all of these.
My second thought was all the couples in The Holiday. Also the main couple in Crazy Rich Asians. I could never get over what his mum did and it would be a huge issue, think AIBU MIL is a massive CF threads X 1000

CutToChase · 17/01/2021 12:38

Danny and Sandy: he would definitely get bored of her after a few months.

newyearnewname123 · 17/01/2021 12:39

I've never watched Dirty Dancing, but the impression I had was that it was a coming of age fling for her, am totally gobsmacked if it ends with a happy ever after.

Sittingonthefence83 · 17/01/2021 12:44

Ron and Hermione, I know they do last in the book but I never thought they were right together.

I've watched Dirty Dancing several times and I always accepted at the end that they went back to their lives and it was just a summer fling ?!

Respectabitch · 17/01/2021 12:46

They don't get together as such, but Mal and Inara of Firefly/Serenity would never work out. He's too damaged for a relationship and would keep insulting her, she couldn't give up her work and he would end up calling her "whore" all the time.
