To ask which film couples you feel wouldn't last long?

So many films end with a loved up couple, few would last the distance.
Here's my take:
Ariel and Eric (little mermaid): she would miss her merfamily (strange as they are) and it would be a massive culture shock for her. He'd get annoyed that she didn't understand Danish aristocracy and social protocol. She's 16 ffs! She'd realise there were plenty more men with legs out there, it wouldn't end well.
There must be loads.

I sometimes wish FRIENDS would return.. I know it's 15 years since it finished, but I'd like to see what their lives are like now. (And their kids!) Then again, maybe it's best to remember it as it was; a brilliant, funny sitcom.

Lots of people would love a friends update, me included. But I do suspect that a modern day version would be completely disappointing. It was of its time and they’d be writing in a very different context today. I don’t think it would hit the same spot.

There's supposed to be a Friends "reunion" in the works ... variety.com/2020/tv/news/friendsreunion-special-hbo-max-production-march-matthew-perry-1234830507/

Miranda and Steve

She is super intelligent and ambitious he is a nice guy but not particularly intelligent and has few interests apart form sport

She would get bored of being his tiger mother

JaninaDuszejko · 17/01/2021 14:35

To go back to Baby and Johnny. Firstly, it's clear in the film that it's a holiday romance, it's a coming of age movie not a romance. Secondly in real life Jennifer Grey was 27 and Patrick Swayze was 35 when they filmed DD. So if JG was playing 17 then why does everyone assume PS was playing a character his own age and not a 25 year old?

I completely agree R&R wouldn't stay together, Ross would be such an unreasonable PITA Rachel would leave and go to Paris and have a fabulous career. I do think Chandler and Monica would last the distance though.

Yes I think it’s just a show with the cast taking about their time on the show.

Murraytheskull · 17/01/2021 14:40

@RhodaDendron

Pretty much none of the fairy tale princesses, they were all teenagers! Also Monica and Chandler - he was better off with Cathy and she was better off with Richard.
Cathy cheated on Chandler so...wouldn't have worked. He should have ended up with Janice she was brilliant and knew him so well. Grin
stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 14:44

@GreenSlide definitely. He was not a good guy. Plus strangely obsessed with his grandma.

Viviene and Richard Gere from Pretty Woman. You jusx know every single row wouldhave him bringing up the fact she used to be a hooker.

Toddlerandtwinstobe · 17/01/2021 14:56

I actually loved Monica and Chandler, because it was real. They were friends not soul mates as she said and they worked hard at their relationship. Richard was way too old for her, she would have been his carer by age 40!

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 17/01/2021 14:56

David and Natalie in LA. He would have had a red top scandal around unsavoury practices and he would have taken the piss out of her family! She would have been annoyed and bored by the protocol and never being able to say what she thought in public.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 17/01/2021 14:57

Monica and Chandler were the best thing about friends. It was a stroke of genius putting them together and the way they did it.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 17/01/2021 14:57

@CutToChase

Maria and Captain Von Trapp. After a while I think she would start ruminating about how A) He was a real dick to her initially and B) He sacked off the Baronness pretty easily

I think she would stay for three children but would.grow increasingly resentful over the years

Didn't they end up living in Vermont and having even more children and stayed married until they died
LegoPirateMonkey · 17/01/2021 15:02

Joey and Pacey would definitely have lasted! I think he’d worked through his issues and grown up and would have been happy that she had a successful career. If the show had put Joey and Dawson together at the end, no way but she and Pacey were meant to be!

Ron and Hermione are the most mismatched fictional couple I can think of; absolutely no way would that have worked out and I think J K Rowling has actually said as much?

Romeo and Juliet probably didn’t have a great chance given Romeo’s propensity for falling in love at the drop of a hat.

I’m not convince by Amy and Laurie in Little Women or by Jo and the professor in the book but given they made the professor super hot and young in the film, maybe they could have made it work...

lljkk · 17/01/2021 15:11

The real von Trapp captain was entirely different personality from the film von Trapp captain. That's why they were indeed very happy for long time. Real man was kind & funny.

And, let's face it, he wasn't the brightest. Check for a pulse, FFS.

Because he looks 35 and she looks 17.

Oh God, yes. I hate what SATC did to Miranda - Steve is so dull and whiny.

Charlotte and Harry are the best SATC couple by far. Give me Harry's self-depreciation and chutzpah over Big's patrician smugness any day.

@Toddlerandtwinstobe

Baby and Johnny would never have ended up together. Maybe that’s the point though!

She’d definitely end up with someone like Neil.

It’s so funny when you watch that movie as a teen, then as an adult. When her Dad is the villain! And then you’re like- actually, she was about 16 and sleeping with a 30 year old guy who was probably a gigalo.. I don’t think I’d be too keen either! Still love the movie though.

Lol. Baby character was eighteen and Johnny was 24. The age gap was fine, 😂

I wish we could see how it all panned out as well!! They owe us that much!

Well yeah! Smile

Yeah, I do worry about a Friends 'sequel' series, ruining the memory, but part of me still wants it. Grin

I have heard (a few times now actually,) that FRIENDS will return.

Seems to be all rumours so far...

Her character is definitely 17 at most!

Chambored · 17/01/2021 16:05

@GreenSlide

I was also unconvinced by the Vicar of Dibley's marriage.
I agree with this.
kungfupannda · 17/01/2021 16:10

Tom Cruise and Renee Zellwegger in Jerry Maguire, unfortunately. He only came running back because he saw Cuba Gooding Jr's relationship with his wife, and he wanted that. I don't think he'd really changed - he just didn't want to be alone, which was what people said about him earlier in the film.

PinkCheesy · 17/01/2021 16:18

Yuri and Lara from Dr Zhivago - they'd both have been consumed with guilt about Tonya. Their baby would never have know her half-siblings and and given her parents hell.

I've never seen Jerry Maguire...... I love Renee Z though, so I will try and watch this soon. Smile

Monica and Richard (in 'Friends,') would not have worked out. Too big an age gap, and he flat out didn't want any more children. Cathy was a massive cheat too. Chandler was too good for her (as was Joey.) And Monica and Chandler were a great pairing.

Also, Phoebe and Mike never suited each other IMO (and his parents were vile.) Phoebe would have been better off with David the scientist guy who went to Minsk. And then I could have had Mike. Grin
