To ask which film couples you feel wouldn't last long?

So many films end with a loved up couple, few would last the distance.
Here's my take:
Ariel and Eric (little mermaid): she would miss her merfamily (strange as they are) and it would be a massive culture shock for her. He'd get annoyed that she didn't understand Danish aristocracy and social protocol. She's 16 ffs! She'd realise there were plenty more men with legs out there, it wouldn't end well.
There must be loads.

@SmidgenofaPigeon

Do we think Harry and Ginny would go the distance? Mrs Weasley would be a very overbearing MIL, sending howlers if they hadn’t invited her over because they wanted a quiet Sunday, and she’d expect to invited on all their holidays, and want to take their children for the first haircut/trip to Diagon Alley. Perhaps Harry at the age of forty would have a bit of a realisation that really he could have played the field a bit, and have an illicit affair with an exotic and more intellectually stimulating witch he meets on a trip to Las Vegas thrown by the Ministry. Ginny, head of the PTA at the local primary school, would find out and cry in her beige trench coat whilst putting on a brave face for the children. They’d eventually get joint custody and the children would visit Harry in his cool man-pad where he’d show off his new trainers and talk about the cool bar that’s just opened up on the corner.
You're describing film Ginny not book Ginny there. Book Ginny would put her mum in her place and would definitely be more than exciting enough for Harry if anything Harry is the wet drip that has nothing going for him Other than he was once they chose. One' Ginny could do better.

Yeah, I was always perplexed as to how Rose got any sort of help as a displaced Titanic refuge as she used a false name, so they'd have thought she wasn’t on the ship at all and was just an imposter on the con. She dines out on it for years (84 years Grin) even though there’d be no record of a Rose Dawson on the ship.

MoonlightInVermont · 17/01/2021 13:19

I would drink (circa 1960s) Christopher Plummer’s bathwater

It’s a very long time indeed since anything on MN made me laugh out loud, but that just did.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 13:20

@happylittlechick yes true, but then the thread did ask about film couples and not book couples!

The films ruined Ginny and she was one of my fave characters in the books.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 13:22

Another Disney one, someone pointed out that Beauty and the Beast was set roughly at the time of the French Revolution so newly Aristocratic Belle might not have had a very happy ending.
Also Princess and the Frog. I did wonder how Tiana's restaurant would have faired during the Great Depression. Naveen would have run off with a flapper girl long before!

@happylittlechick I agree, I’m still getting over the stilted ‘open up, you!’ bit where Ginny puts a mince pie in Harry’s mouth.

I always thought Rose’s hubby (you know the one she had a lovely life with, lots of babies and grand babies) would be fuming waiting for her in heaven and realising she’s spending eternity with some lad she shagged once 80 years earlier Grin
Kanaloa · 17/01/2021 13:24

Both the couples in the Breakfast Club. Monday morning I think they would just totally blank each other - maybe Claire & Bender would keep up a secret relationship, but when the excitement fizzled out they would just split up.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 13:25

@sparklesocks Grin agreed I always thought it was odd that she only wants Jack at the end, never mind the man that was by her side and the father of her children and who facilities her spitting and riding horses and wearing trousers as a tribute to Jack Grin

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 13:26

Plus, if Jack had lived, two years later he’d had ended up as cannon fodder.

Bailegangaire · 17/01/2021 13:26

@Robbybobtail

Maria and Captain Von Trapp

I see your point, but the above were a real-life couple and I believe lived happily ever after!

Yes, but their lives bear pretty much zero resemblance to the characters depicted in the film — Maria was from a very dysfunctional background, grew up an atheist socialist, said herself she was ‘angry’ at God and her new husband on her wedding day because what she actually wanted was to be a nun, the family started singing for financial reasons in the early 30 because Captain Von Trapp lost all their money during the Depression and they took in lodgers and lived in the attic of their house, and they left Austria for Italy long before the Anschluss. (Plus it’s fairly clear from memoirs Maria had a hair-trigger temper, and that she, rather than her husband, was a difficult character.)

And actually I think he died within a year or two of thee d of the war...?

nicebreeze · 17/01/2021 13:27

@CutToChase

Maria and Captain Von Trapp. After a while I think she would start ruminating about how A) He was a real dick to her initially and B) He sacked off the Baronness pretty easily

I think she would stay for three children but would.grow increasingly resentful over the years

You know they married and had kids in real life?
RhodaDendron · 17/01/2021 13:28

Pretty much none of the fairy tale princesses, they were all teenagers! Also Monica and Chandler - he was better off with Cathy and she was better off with Richard.

Bailegangaire · 17/01/2021 13:29

Grin

The actress who played Liesl is funny about him in her memoir — apparently he was always trying to put the moves on her on set, and complained so much about how heavy the child who played Gretel was that they substituted her with a lighter body double for the scene at the end where he has to carry her through the mountains.

StepOutOfLine · 17/01/2021 13:30

Johnny and Baby wouldn't last because Baby would either
a) realise he was a slimy creepo who was at least 15 years older than her and would go on to wish her Dad had belted him
b) spot he was wearing high heels and had a weirdly high waisted trouser sense.

And I love Johnny as much as the next woman.

Hugh Grant wouldn't even have noticed bloody Tiffany with her awright me cock sparrer ridiculousness. And quite right too.

Bridget and Mark. He'd have binned her when she became a real alcoholic and he realised they had nothing whatsoever in common.

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. She'd get fed up of having to lift him onto a box for a snog. And his stroppy tantrums would get on her nerves.

tofuschnitzel · 17/01/2021 13:31

@Respectabitch

They don't get together as such, but Mal and Inara of Firefly/Serenity would never work out. He's too damaged for a relationship and would keep insulting her, she couldn't give up her work and he would end up calling her "whore" all the time.
I don't think Mal is damaged, he's just a vile little man. He constantly insults Inara for being a companion, he doesn't respect her at all. But of course in Joss Whedon land that makes a great basis for a relationship.
Kokeshi123 · 17/01/2021 13:32

Plus, if Jack had lived, two years later he’d had ended up as cannon fodder.

Hmm, I thought not many American men died in WWI?

I think Rose would have run off with someone else once she got bored with him though!

Kokeshi123 · 17/01/2021 13:34

Everyone seemed to marry super young in Harry Potter (except Lupin). Harry's parents were like 19 or something when they got married, and Fleur likewise. Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione can't have been much older.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 13:35

@Kokeshi123 true, I just looked it up and it wasn’t many actually so probably he’d have been ok! But they still wouldn’t have lasted.

Respectabitch · 17/01/2021 13:39

Eh I'm not sure that's entirely fair. Even in all the post Serenity comic stuff Mal and Inara never get past "secret" fucking while still fighting a lot. I don't think Joss is naive about them not having a good basis for a relationship. But then again he hates relationships generally, and also dads, and there's a whole PhD worth in there about his misogyny/attitudes to women.

BlackCatShadow · 17/01/2021 13:41

Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. She'd get fed up of having to lift him onto a box for a snog. And his stroppy tantrums would get on her nerves.

I think also it turned out she was actually gay. Maybe him too. Wink

The worst is The Graduate. Dustin Hoffman is so creepy in that movie. He's horrible to her, stalks her, and then interrupts her wedding. What on Earth was she thinking leaving with him?

Graphista · 17/01/2021 13:42

Most of the films I love the couples absolutely wouldn't last!

Tom cruise alone would leave a path of destruction...

Top gun - no way Charlie sticks around to play little wifey to a mere pilot given her own status

Color of money - carmen will quickly realise a hustler is not a husband or father figure type

Cocktail - shotgun wedding, mismatched people from different backgrounds and cultures, she'd get sick of slumming it and him leaving all the wifework to her especially raising the twins, he'll get fed up with the pressure to provide and her complaining he's working too much

Days of thunder - she'd quickly realise she's far too good for some arrogant, adrenaline junkie

Minority report - the issues that split them up are still there at the end of the film, few couples survive the loss of a child

Knight and day - he'd get bored and want to get back in the spy game, for her worrying sick about him due to his job would soon get old

Rock of ages - again shotgun job if they're even married at all, he'd soon bore of fatherhood and she'd be fed up of his lifestyle and his not being there with his family.

Others

Ferris bueller - they're just kids and even ferris himself recognises the idyll of high school life is coming to an end and that will likely mean the end of his relationship

Officer and a gentleman, he's still got so much damage due to his childhood unless he got loads of therapy that's unlikely to work

Highlander - that's one hell of an Age gap! Grin

Armageddon - I think she'd resent him living instead of her dad and his survivors guilt would end that

Point break - started with him lying to her about everything, she'll never trust him

Just my thoughts

nuitdesetoiles · 17/01/2021 13:44

Carrie and Big. I think after a while in real life he would defenestrate her...

BlackCatShadow · 17/01/2021 13:44

Talking of age gaps, has anyone mentioned Twilight yet?
