To ask which film couples you feel wouldn't last long?

So many films end with a loved up couple, few would last the distance.
Here's my take:
Ariel and Eric (little mermaid): she would miss her merfamily (strange as they are) and it would be a massive culture shock for her. He'd get annoyed that she didn't understand Danish aristocracy and social protocol. She's 16 ffs! She'd realise there were plenty more men with legs out there, it wouldn't end well.
There must be loads.

@Sittingonthefence83 same. Dirty Dancing was never about the start of a long term romance.

Respectabitch · 17/01/2021 12:47

@Respectabitch

They don't get together as such, but Mal and Inara of Firefly/Serenity would never work out. He's too damaged for a relationship and would keep insulting her, she couldn't give up her work and he would end up calling her "whore" all the time.
Oh, and this reminds me to say that the Beatrice-and-Benedick we fight all the time thing is highly overrated as the basis for a RL relationship. Except in the case of B&B themselves and Carolyn and Herc of Cabin Pressure.
Toddlerandtwinstobe · 17/01/2021 12:48

Baby and Johnny would never have ended up together. Maybe that’s the point though!

She’d definitely end up with someone like Neil.

It’s so funny when you watch that movie as a teen, then as an adult. When her Dad is the villain! And then you’re like- actually, she was about 16 and sleeping with a 30 year old guy who was probably a gigalo.. I don’t think I’d be too keen either! Still love the movie though.

Trinacham · 17/01/2021 12:49

@CutToChase

Jack and Rose. I think back on dry land she wouldnt be happy with slumming it.
This is who I was going to say!
Terracottasaur · 17/01/2021 12:51

Baby and Johnny. It was a beautiful summer romance but they were too different and their paths would eventually have diverged.

Respectabitch · 17/01/2021 12:54

I think, to be fair, that Dirty Dancing is pretty clear about the fact that Baby and Johnny is not going to be Twoo Wuv. It's about growing up and sexual awakening for her, about meeting someone with principles for Johnny. They'd obviously split but be the richer for having known each other.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 12:54

Do we think Harry and Ginny would go the distance? Mrs Weasley would be a very overbearing MIL, sending howlers if they hadn’t invited her over because they wanted a quiet Sunday, and she’d expect to invited on all their holidays, and want to take their children for the first haircut/trip to Diagon Alley. Perhaps Harry at the age of forty would have a bit of a realisation that really he could have played the field a bit, and have an illicit affair with an exotic and more intellectually stimulating witch he meets on a trip to Las Vegas thrown by the Ministry. Ginny, head of the PTA at the local primary school, would find out and cry in her beige trench coat whilst putting on a brave face for the children. They’d eventually get joint custody and the children would visit Harry in his cool man-pad where he’d show off his new trainers and talk about the cool bar that’s just opened up on the corner.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 12:56

@SmidgenofaPigeon Grinthat is exactly what would have happened!

keiratwiceknightly · 17/01/2021 12:56

Any Romeo and Juliet pairing ever.

Ross and Rachel - she would so have learned to resent him for causing her to Jack in her career and her chance at Paris.

SirGawain · 17/01/2021 13:00

@CutToChase

Never knew that re Maria and the Captain!
Yes but that was in real life, this is about the film.
NaughtipussMaximus · 17/01/2021 13:00

Sandra Bullock and Keanu in Speed. They do hang a lampshade off it though at the end which makes it more acceptable.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 17/01/2021 13:00

I think Anna and Will (? The HG character) from Notting Hill. Once he got over her self regard as to how important she was as a 'movie star' he would be bored by her I think.

The divorce settlement would be good though.

VienneseWhirligig · 17/01/2021 13:01

Christine Daae and Raoul de Chagny. He was a vain, possessive and shallow drip and wouldn't have copied with her career taking off and would have demanded she stay at home as it would be more seemly for the wife of an aristocrat. He would also have been deeply suspicious that she really loved the Phantom, and that she shagged him first. She would have resented being forced to give up singing and would have missed the encouragement the Phantom gave her to succeed.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 17/01/2021 13:01

I did not phrase that very well, but I meant that the Julia R character was so damned impressed with herself for being an actress.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/01/2021 13:01

I don’t think ANY of the couples in Love Actually would have made it.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/01/2021 13:03

@Robbybobtail

Maria and Captain Von Trapp

I see your point, but the above were a real-life couple and I believe lived happily ever after!

Yes but they were nothing like their film versions. @CutToChase is spot-on about them.
MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/01/2021 13:05

Except in the case of B&B themselves and Carolyn and Herc of Cabin Pressure

Grin The two greatest romances that fiction has to offer.

Damn straight.
MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/01/2021 13:08

Sky Masterton and Sarah Brown from Guys and Dolls.

Pretty much all couples from musicals, actually.

LunaNorth · 17/01/2021 13:08

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail.

Give it a year and she’d be resentful about how he basically wrecked her business, and he’d be off starting another online emotional affair.

Butchyrestingface · 17/01/2021 13:08

Jack and Rose. I think back on dry land she wouldnt be happy with slumming it.

Definitely. Little Lady Fauntleroy can't even make room for him on a massive flotation device when he's about to drown in arctic water. What are the chances she'll share the bedcovers/chores/food, etc?

Au revoir, Jack. It's every pampered aristo for themselves. Grin

MorrisZapp · 17/01/2021 13:08

Ron and Hermione are the worst couple of all time. Even the actors are cringing.

Butchyrestingface · 17/01/2021 13:10

Jack and Annie from Speed. But we know this as a 100% certainty. Speed 2 was a travesty. Grin

Butchyrestingface · 17/01/2021 13:12

@CutToChase

Maria and Captain Von Trapp. After a while I think she would start ruminating about how A) He was a real dick to her initially and B) He sacked off the Baronness pretty easily

I think she would stay for three children but would.grow increasingly resentful over the years

I would drink (circa 1960s) Christopher Plummer's bathwater.
GinasGirl · 17/01/2021 13:16

I thought in Titanic she hid who she was at the end so she could escape the horrid fiancé and built herself a new life on presumably nothing, so wouldn't have been living as she had previously?
