I watched a programme about her last night and she was so charming.
It would just make for a really jolly afternoon.

I can’t think of anyone who would be better company, can you?

Another Dolly admirer here. I'm not a theme park person at all, but I loved Dollywood.

And as an older person in the US who just had my first dose of the vaccine whose development Dolly helped fund, well, words are just not enough.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 16/01/2021 15:48

It's 'When Jesus comes calling for me' that makes me tears, we played it at my mums cremation. I also love Blue Valley Songbird, and every other song but those 2 are right at the top of my most played.

UndyingDeathdefying · 16/01/2021 15:48

“It’s “coat of many colours” that brings the tears for me.”

Yes, but I made the mistake of comparing myself to the mum in the song and felt extremely inadequate afterwards.
Dolly would know what to say about that

@UndyingDeathdefying

‘My parents almost called me Jolene when I was born!’

!!!

My brother would have been Jolene if he was a girl, instead he ended up with Jethro.
UndyingDeathdefying · 16/01/2021 15:52

“whose development Dolly helped fund”

I guess the bank clerk who inspired “Jolene” has, also, indirectly, funded the vaccine. Which is cool.

omg thank you for sharing... Im so excited for Dollyworld ... when we eventually get there that is 🥰

singsingbluesilver · 16/01/2021 16:00

Holy hell I am now on page 5 and not one single poster has a bad word to say about Dolly. That has to be a record for MN!!!

I adore Dolly. Her song writing is up there with the very best, and I have long thought she has not got the credit for it that it deserves pure poetry.

I read somewhere that when they made 9 to 5 someone remarked there was no theme song yet. Dolly just sat down and wrote it in minutes. That is some talent.

She does an amazing amount for charity. She is as funny as heck. Self deprecating. A superb role model. All hail Dolly!

Deadringer · 16/01/2021 16:02

I do love Dolly but have never really played her music at home, Queen and Bowie are more my style, but last year i mentioned one of her songs to dd age 21 and dd age 16, then said i suppose you never heard of Dolly. They were shocked and both said of course we know Dolly, she is a legend!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/01/2021 16:03

I also love that she wont let anyone make fun of her style.

Instead, she makes a joke out of it (eg "it takes a lot of money to look this cheap!").

A lot of celebs would get pissy and deny they've had surgery etc
But Dolly just laughs at it herself, taking all the vitriol or spite out of any attempts to belittle her.

She's just pure class and I love her.

Deadringer · 16/01/2021 16:04

I don't like Miriam M at all all, i think she is a horrible woman.

BenoneBeauty · 16/01/2021 16:07

@Wearywithteens

Don’t know how people can mention Miriam Margolyes in the same sentence! DP is a savvy hope giving life force whereas MM - as ‘funny’ as she purports to be, is spiteful, uniformed and divisive.
Completely agree!
MargotMoon · 16/01/2021 16:08

Love ‘Coat of many colours’ , ‘In the Ghetto’
and D.I.V.O,R.C.E.
She is a fantastic songwriter

Wait, what? She wrote In the Ghetto as well??

Loved the story about how she refused to sell 'I will always love you' to Elvis. What a wise woman.

And THANK YOU x1,000 to the podcast recommenders, just listened to the first episode about her early songs and it is absolutely fascinating, love the song analysis and history of the mountain songs that influenced her, and the way she turned them on their heads. The story about the song about the man who killed his pregnant girlfriend making its way from Shrewsbury to Tennessee made me go ShockSadAngry

Dolly would know what to say about that

She would. It’s a saying in our house- “what would Dolly do?” Grin

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 16/01/2021 16:34

Another Dolly fan here, after Glastonbury there was a dog left behind and no one claimed it for days, they nicknamed the dog Dolly, she was going to adopt Dolly if no one claimed them, sadly for the dog the owner came forward.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 16/01/2021 16:35

Dolly is just pure beautiful. Inside and out.

UndyingDeathdefying · 16/01/2021 16:40

Have we got links to the podcasts?

Totally agree, it was great. And I loved seeing that Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin clearly love her too.

I have that on a mug, lol
tinselearedcow · 16/01/2021 16:51

@UndyingDeathdefying

“her most famous song is about him straying, isn't it?”

In last night’s programme there was footage where she talked about how now he lies on the sofa all afternoon and that she thinks about calling up Jolene and asking her to come and get him Grin

Oh that has cheered me up so much! Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joleeene, please come back and take away my maaaan!
tinselearedcow · 16/01/2021 16:58

Thanks @AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter for posting the link - that is my evening's viewing sorted.

AllTheChocolateNow · 16/01/2021 17:02

Adore her! She’s such a warm, open spirit.

AnneElliott · 16/01/2021 17:15

Also a fan. I've seen her in concert twice and she does a great show. My son named his kitten after her. She's a small tiny cat with a great voice!!

tinselvestsparklepants · 16/01/2021 17:24

Moastytoasty can I come too please as we are only a few miles from Pilton. Smile

RedHotChiliChips · 16/01/2021 17:25

I love Dolly too. I find it incredible she has all that talent, drive, intelligent, beauty, heart and wit. It’s almost other wordly. I’ve heard the claim that there’s not a single person in showbiz who have anything bad to say about Dolly.

Miley Cyrus has done amazing version of Jolene btw. It’s in youtube if you search it. Her voice really suits for this kind of music.
