I watched a programme about her last night and she was so charming.
It would just make for a really jolly afternoon.

I can’t think of anyone who would be better company, can you?

Yes, she's certainly got an awful lot going for her and she comes across as such a lovely woman.

Like pp, I much prefer her version of I will always love you. What she said about Whitney Houston's version showed such generosity of spirit and genuine warmth.

Lampzade · 16/01/2021 13:45

@MiladyBerserko

I know someone who worked with her who said she is genuinely kind and generous
That is great to hear. I am a big fan. My kids have spent their childhood listening to her whilst on the school run. Love ‘Coat of many colours’ , ‘In the Ghetto’ and D.I.V.O,R.C.E. She is a fantastic songwriter
amusedtodeath1 · 16/01/2021 13:48

I agree there's just something about her that's so warm and welcoming. Definitely on my ultimate dinner party guest list. Smile

Jaypreen · 16/01/2021 13:50

She comes across as very nice. She seems incapable of being insincere too. I absolutely love her..

mumnowformerrockstar · 16/01/2021 13:53

She's lovely and very intelligent

Cheeseandlobster · 16/01/2021 13:55

@StillCoughingandLaughing

My favourite Dolly moment was many years back on Graham Norton when he asked if she ever got fed up with people thinking ‘I Will Always Love You’ was Whitney Houston’s song.

She said, ‘Are you kidding? The amount of money that made me? I send that woman a Christmas card every year!’

I bloody love this
NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 16/01/2021 13:58

Couldn’t adore her more if I tried. She’s just all round a bloody good egg.

Justnormajean · 16/01/2021 14:02

I have found my tribe! Total Dolly adoration from me, such an amazing creative talent and a fabulous human being.

mooloop · 16/01/2021 14:03

Love Dolly! What a fabulous, clever, talented woman. Her imagination library project for children is fantastic too.

mymadpuppy · 16/01/2021 14:06

I only recently found out she'd written "I will always love you". I love her version far better than Witney Houston's too.

tabulahrasa · 16/01/2021 14:12

@BlueThistles

Im going to Dolly World as soon as we're able 🎉
I went to Dollywood 2 years ago... it was great Smile

There’s a replica of the cabin she lived in as a child - it really makes you go, no wonder she appreciates how lucky she is and does so much for charity...

Brendabigbaps · 16/01/2021 14:18

One of biggest regrets involves Dolly, I love her.

We went on holiday to America, we spent a couple of weeks in Tennessee, travelling from Memphis to Nashville, Chattanooga and ending up for a week in Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge, which is coincidentally the area where Dolly grew up and more importantly the home of Dollywood!

Of course we went to Dollywood, which incidentally is full of Dolly’s extended family and it was amazing. We discovered whilst we were there that there is a Dolly parade on every May and day before we were due to leave. I was extremely excited by this point and we were going to watch the parade.
The day of the parade arrived and my DH decided he needed to pop out, he said he’d be back in plenty of time. The cabin we were staying in wasn’t in walking distance of the parade and we had a 2 year old at that time. He only went and got stuck behind the bloody parade!
I missed the whole thing.

Dolly also used to just turn up at Dollywood in the first week of the season, I again missed her by a day!!

Best holiday ever despite the near misses, I’d go back in a heartbeat

Oh yes! She is amazing. So full of love and energy. She was born dirt dirt poor and but has drive and talent and intelligence . Her father's illiteracy inspired the book drive. She is just wonderful😊.

PS @Wearywithteens
I agree with you about MM .thought it was just me who finds it uncomfortable to watch and listen to her.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 16/01/2021 14:37

@Wearywithteens

Don’t know how people can mention Miriam Margolyes in the same sentence! DP is a savvy hope giving life force whereas MM - as ‘funny’ as she purports to be, is spiteful, uniformed and divisive.
Totally agree. They occupy entirely different worlds.
Whitney168 · 16/01/2021 14:46

@spoonrace

Another Dolly fan here...I've even been to Dollywood Grin
So have I - lovely theme park. Pigeon Forge is a bit of an assault on the senses when you drive out of the Smokies though!

Dolly a fabulous woman, for sure.

Chalkcheese · 16/01/2021 15:01

She always has a seat at my table. And at my Mums house. We both love her.

I totally agree. Did you see her on Graham norton with Will.i.am?

She was coming out with pretty gross racist terminology the entire time and giggling about it like teehee! see how naughty I am!

I dont find racist language funny thanks.....

Whitney168 · 16/01/2021 15:16

I'm another in the anti-MM camp too - 'oh look, I'm old and I swear a lot, aren't I shocking?'. Very unfunny.

Doggybiccys · 16/01/2021 15:21

LOVE Dolly!!! Her singing “I will always love you” brings a tear to my eye!!

GypsyLee · 16/01/2021 15:26

She is amazing, such enthusiasm and energy after 50 years in the business.
She can run rings round lots of young performers today.
Long may she continue, an inspiration to women and by all counts a lovely person.
Love you Dolly Parton.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 16/01/2021 15:27

It’s “coat of many colours” that brings the tears for me.
Doggybiccys · 16/01/2021 15:32

@YouBoughtMeAWall - another tear jerker!! My 19 year old great nephew and 53 yr old husband bonded over a shared love of dolly!

My aunt had this played at the end of her funeral. Beautiful song but it always takes me back to that day😓
BLToutanowhere · 16/01/2021 15:38

Her book charity sends out well over a million books per month in just the USA and UK.

An earlier poster referred to one of her songs being about her husband cheating. He didn't. The song was Jolene and the inspiration was a redhead lady at the bank who really had a crush on him. The name Jolene was from a little redhead girl who asked for Dolly's autograph.

When she was asked about her drag queen following her reply of wig, big chest I'm easy to copy (or words to that effect) was just awesome.
