@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer

ShirleyPhallus I am on MN to have a laugh! It's ok to have a different opinion without having " a fight" you know Grin If you are that sensitive, MN might not be the best place for you, and certainly not AIBU
Errrrr yes, my point is that it’s fine to disagree without a fight but you literally said “it’s ok go unpleasantly disagrees with you”

Just don’t be a knob for the sake of it, right

QuestionableMouse · 16/01/2021 10:47

@Iwonder08

OP, CG jackets cost £££, people who buy them are aware of the fact it comes from geese, it is not difficult to imagine the geese don't enjoy the process. It is also very hard not to notice a persistent group of protesters on Regents Street. I would suggest you go back to your box with your patronising post. It is just tiresome so many people suddenly feel the need to preach. It is not your job 'to raise awareness', it has been done many times before you. Find other ways to make yourself better, maybe go and report a couple of neighbours for having an unschedule walk in a park
This might come as a shock to you but not all of us live in London. I've never been to Regent Street. It could be filled with clowns and dancing ponies for all I know.

Yours is the patronising post!

ShirleyPhallus · 16/01/2021 10:50

Gosh my sentence makes no sense at all but you get the gist

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 16/01/2021 10:53

Errrrr yes, my point is that it’s fine to disagree without a fight but you literally said “it’s ok go unpleasantly disagrees with you”

by that I meant it's not a drama or something to report or be upset about, if someone disagree unpleasantly. Tough it up. People will be unpleasant with you in life, it's fine. It doesn't matter. Being female doesn't mean you are a fragile little thing who can't take it.

OHolyTights · 16/01/2021 10:54

I had a good idea from the title of the thread that the OP would be trying to raise awareness about something like this. I made the decision to click on it.

Thank you OP for informing me about this and for trying to raise awareness of it in the wider population.

Don't be downhearted by the response of some. The rest of us are listening and will be acting upon it.

I am far from an activist but I have cared about animal welfare since very early childhood.

@Roundlampshade

Does this mean I can never buy a down duvet or pillow case again?
Well it’s up to you of course but it is is impossible to know if the feathers in the product you buy have been plucked from live birds or not. There are plenty of cruelty free alternatives.
Galaxyofstars · 16/01/2021 10:57

@whatkatydid2013

Is the treatment of the geese any better/worse than the treatment of the average chicken. Asking only as I’ve noticed a trend for lots of people getting outraged about things like this that wouldn’t think twice about picking up a pack of drumsticks or whatever from Tesco. Animals that are farmed for consumption of any kind are generally not treated all that well and even if they are they still get slaughtered at the end of the process. I imagine most people who wear these coats (or buy down products generally) just accept that’s how animals are farmed and choose to accept it as the norm. I think though it’s a bit hypocritical to have a go at people buying these coats unless you are someone who either doesn’t have meat at all or limits it to the higher welfare organic stuff (which to be fair still involves animals being bred for slaughter and having lives ended prematurely). Personally I’d be loathe to criticise someone for wearing the coats since I let my kids have chicken nuggets from McDonalds on occasion and I doubt the chickens that went into them fare much better.
I think it's important to highlight all animal cruelty. Just because the OP has mentioned this, doesn't mean she tacitly approves of factory farmed chicken. And even if she did, it's still vital to spread awareness of individual forms of cruelty.
HorseOfPhillipMoss · 16/01/2021 10:57

Very patronising. This is widely publicised , people are free to make their own choices. I wouldn't buy one myself but I don't need someone telling me not to, the information is freely available.

hopeinavial · 16/01/2021 11:01

I don't think people do know this. I didn't know the birds were live. Don't some of the coats have coyote fur on them as well?

I think there is going to be a ban on importing fur soon that will stop those coats coming in to the UK.

I think AIBU is used for all kinds of topics, often coronavirus when there is a separate section for this too. It is a non-delimited section and I think any topics are far game for AIBU.

Scarlettpixie · 16/01/2021 11:01

Thanks for sharing OP. It seems many people are not aware a lot of the feathers in down products are plucked from live birds. Horrendous.

David Attenborough got a bit of stick a while back for being filmed or photographed in a CD coat.

It was clear what this post would be about so you all who are complaining had the option to scroll on by if you don’t want to be made to feel bad 🙄

Al1langdownthecleghole · 16/01/2021 11:02

The OP title “Can I ask you all to never buy Canada Goose again”

I’m not against her for trying to raise awareness of animal cruelty. I’m just pointing out that I’m not that stupid or thoughtless to begin with.

That “again” is telling.

MintyMabel · 16/01/2021 11:02

It is good to raise awareness.

I’d have thought you’d be living under a rock to not know, but the responses here can be pretty much narrowed down to “yeah, we knew” or “I had no intention of buying one but I’m glad you told me that thing that has been all over the Internet forever”

Imissmoominmama · 16/01/2021 11:06

I saw someone in one yesterday. It’s well publicised, so he must’ve bought it knowing where the fur came from.

Twat.

The OP is asking not telling and not everyone knows how down is obtained. They assume it is a by product of the meat industry.

I have never bought down products as I heard about this 30 years ago as a teenager and was horrified but clearly not everyone is aware in the same way not everyone knows about the cruelty in wool production or that day old male chicks are macerated in the egg industry.

People don’t just know everything they have to learn. If this thread stops a few or even one person from buying down that’s great (even if they still eat meat).

Duanphen · 16/01/2021 11:12

Are you somehow shocked that they use feathers that were not donated willingly by the geese? Did you just think it was a nice animal name for the brand?

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 16/01/2021 11:14

Excellent post for many reasons IMO and positioned to get the best coverage.

wonderup · 16/01/2021 11:16

Don't forgot the dick responses

Ariela · 16/01/2021 11:19

Buy a wool one eg Baavet, much nicer and warmer in winter cool in summer

Redrunbluerun · 16/01/2021 11:19

Gosh it’s a wonder they’re so popular. It’s a shame people don’t care more about animal cruelty. Plenty of alternatives that don’t involve torture and the grim death of those poor birds.
I don’t think you need to be an activist to appreciate what the Op is trying to do. Just a decent human being.

mygenericusername · 16/01/2021 11:22

I've never been to Regent Street. It could be filled with clowns and dancing ponies for all I know

There has been on occasion I believe.

Canada Goose are a highly unethical company but I wasn’t made aware of this until very recently. It’s good that the message is still being spread. Awareness is everything.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/01/2021 11:22

of course many places have banned the use of animals in the circus, so I'm now also imagining a goose utopia run by the geese, for the geese.

I bet it started off with that intention but some geese are more equal than others. Perhaps the scenes described in the the OP are just what the communist goostopia really looks like?

marshmallowfluffy · 16/01/2021 11:27

OP your mistake was not to post about CG rather than John Lewis down products. Grin

Some of the replies here are completely dickish. What percentage of people live in London? What percentage of Londoners shop on Regent Street?
Why would you assume that everybody knows exactly what you know? There's a thread that crops up on here regularly about what most people know but you've only just found out.
I understand if you're nice and comfy under your down duvet you don't want a lecture but there's plenty of posts that could be on another board

MiladyBerserko · 16/01/2021 11:54

I didn't know either . Thanks for posting.

hopeinavial · 16/01/2021 12:01

Another sad fact is that cheap CG imitations claim to contain goose down, but actually contain all sorts of other animal fur/feathers/down etc, could be fox, cat, duck etc.
Best look for 100% polyester or something else like wool if that bothers you.
CG also use fur for decoration (coyote usually, but don't know about imitation brands)

edenhills · 16/01/2021 12:09

I didnt know either. Thanks for spreading awareness x
