How incredibly grown up.

😇 Thanks.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/01/2021 09:51

@Chocomel

To the posters who didn't know - genuine question - what kind of conditions did you imagine for the birds being reared for the mass market feather and down producing industry?
Obviously it's something I dwell on quite a lot.

I tend to picture the geese in some kind of goose circus with clown geese and trapeze geese a goose that rides a little horse standing up.

BrownRogerForever · 16/01/2021 09:51

Thank you Op. I was not aware and just to say I have never seen the protesters as not everyone loves in London or big cities.

It's always good to raise awareness.

Noshowlomo · 16/01/2021 09:52

This should be protested. Horrendous cruelty involved for geese and coyotes

Noshowlomo · 16/01/2021 09:53

*posted but suppose should be protested as well

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 16/01/2021 09:53

Do you believe the geese used by John Lewis had more pleasurable experience?

Nope. That’s why I wouldn’t own anything like this.

TurquoiseDress · 16/01/2021 09:53

Thank you for posting, I'd not heard about this, it's not a brand I've bought in the past. Good to raise awareness

wonderup · 16/01/2021 09:55

Vast majority of people who buy them must be aware of the brand and quite deliberately chose it.

I'm not sure, I'm aware of the brand & have been for years but only some years ago knew about their methods. I personally wouldn't wear it even if faux as it's a bit reality star got a hello spread for me but some people aspire to that.

Mrgrinch · 16/01/2021 09:56

@Iwonder08

All the posters who were not aware of them, have you actually considered buying them? I somehow doubt anyone would randomly browse for a jacket and decide to chose a brand they've never heard of and spend over £1000. Vast majority of people who buy them must be aware of the brand and quite deliberately chose it. For these people it would be very unlikely not to be aware of how the down is produced. There was an awful lot of publicity about it. I personally don't own anything from this brand, however I do own a goose down jacket, a goose down duvet and pillows from John Lewis, made of Canadian goose down. Do you believe the geese used by John Lewis had more pleasurable experience?
I think most of them don't bother to research where the things they buy come from. It's well known about Canada goose so they can be outraged without the discomfort of knowing that they likely have many items in their own homes from similar conditions.
Chocomel · 16/01/2021 09:58

@donquixotedelamancha of course many places have banned the use of animals in the circus, so I'm now also imagining a goose utopia run by the geese, for the geese....

ShowOfHands · 16/01/2021 09:59

I still don't know what a CG item looks like and have only ever been to Londinium a couple of times. However, I did know this because when 8 months pg with dd 14yrs ago, I went to the city for a last weekend away seeing my favourite band at the RAH. I walked down Regents St after having got off the tube. It was 31 degrees, my feet were swollen to the point my sandals had made my feet bleed and I was desperately looking for a pharmacy. There was a group of protesters shouting and waving leaflets and one lurched into my path and asked if I would buy CG. I said I was afraid I didn't know CG and she started aggressively lecturing me about it while my head began to swim. I was hot, in pain and feeling shocking. She took my sweating and green hue to mean I was suitably horrified and started triumphantly shouting "SEE! SEE!" whilst gesticulating at me, presumably as an example of a yokel who had been enlightened.

I. Was. Sick. On. Her. Shoes.

Not an anti-protester post though, another protester was really very lovely and helped me out with water, tissues, directions and reassuring words.

OP, nowt wrong with enlightening people to animal cruelty practices Smile

MrsClatterbuck · 16/01/2021 10:01

I was in a mall in Canada a few years ago which had one of their stores. There was an enormous queue outside and they were limiting the number of people allowed in. The vast majority of people queueing were Asian who I think were part of a tour.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 16/01/2021 10:01

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

I will still wear them.

C u next Tuesday.

Is the treatment of the geese any better/worse than the treatment of the average chicken. Asking only as I’ve noticed a trend for lots of people getting outraged about things like this that wouldn’t think twice about picking up a pack of drumsticks or whatever from Tesco. Animals that are farmed for consumption of any kind are generally not treated all that well and even if they are they still get slaughtered at the end of the process. I imagine most people who wear these coats (or buy down products generally) just accept that’s how animals are farmed and choose to accept it as the norm. I think though it’s a bit hypocritical to have a go at people buying these coats unless you are someone who either doesn’t have meat at all or limits it to the higher welfare organic stuff (which to be fair still involves animals being bred for slaughter and having lives ended prematurely). Personally I’d be loathe to criticise someone for wearing the coats since I let my kids have chicken nuggets from McDonalds on occasion and I doubt the chickens that went into them fare much better.

SimonJT · 16/01/2021 10:03

Surely people already know that down, fur, suede and leather are cruel to the animal they are taken from, be that an animal that is alive or has been bred to be slaughtered.

**very hard not to notice a persistent group of protesters on Regent Street

weird thing to say when most people don't live in London.

Galaxyofstars · 16/01/2021 10:05

Thank you OP, the more people who are aware of this the better. I'm puzzled by the berating for posting in AIBU, all kinds of stuff that isn't relevant gets posted here, sometimes people even say 'posting here for traffic'.

I can only think that people getting cross are fans of the product.

Mrgrinch · 16/01/2021 10:08

The MNers who live in London tend to forget that the whole world doesn't live there. It's quite funny once you start to pick up on it, they think everyone has the tube etc.
ShirleyPhallus · 16/01/2021 10:08

What a weird thread. So many people posting arsehole comments to the OP for mentioning something to do with animal cruelty.

Really bizarre

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 16/01/2021 10:10

Surely people already know that down, fur, suede and leather are cruel to the animal they are taken from, be that an animal that is alive or has been bred to be slaughtered.

But people comfort themselves with it being done ‘humanely’...😬

upsidedownwavylegs · 16/01/2021 10:10

@FrostyChocolateMilkshake

Thank you for raising awareness OP. I absolutely hate Canada Goose and do not understand how someone can wear their coats knowing the cruelty that is endured in their production.
Probably just the same way people accept the cruelty in the manufacturing of any of the animal products they consume.
Windmyonlyfriend · 16/01/2021 10:14

This place is so weird.

Windmyonlyfriend · 16/01/2021 10:16

I’ve never heard of Canada Goose. I’ve googled it and I don’t even recognise the brand logo or the jacket style.

Berating the OP because you think everyone should’ve heard of this already is just plain odd.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/01/2021 10:18

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

You are not on Netmums , you know you can swear here

🤣 Yeah. But last time I called someone a cunt on here, I got deleted. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's a fine line, but there are some fairly consistent rules:

You can say that geese are cunts, or men are cunts or that particular behaviour is being a cunt.

But you can't call humans cunts; either individual posters or in a group like ethnicity or religion (except Catholics, go to town on Catholics- they are allowed).

You can say some vacuous celebs are cunts (like the queen) but not if they are Friends of Mumsnet (like Jack Monroe).

You can say politicians are cunts except members of the Green party.
