To think... take your Christmas decorations down?

Some of my neighbours still have wreaths on their doors. Surely their decorations should come down now?

Any of you still got yours up?

DH bought a string of outside lights this year. They're still up but I've turned them off at the plug. They'll stay up until he gets around to taking them down. No idea why he hasn't yet.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 12:27

I doubt everyone who leaves decs up all through January are celebrating Candlemas. There are lots of reasons why.

I think it's fine for op to express an opinion on here about decs still up. I like to keep Christmas in December. It spoils the special wow factor of Christmas for me if I've got decorations up for almost 3 months of the year.

By January I want to de clutter and look forward to spring. I really hate the winter.

Op is "minding her own business" I mean I assume she's not reporting sightings of Christmas trees to the police or confronting her neighbour about the wreath.

bobbojobbo · 12/01/2021 12:30

Imagine having so little going on in your life that you care whether other people have taken their Xmas decs down or not.

dottiedaisee · 12/01/2021 12:38

@SprogletsMum

I've taken down all my decorations except for the lights on my front window. They're off but because they're outside and it's cold I've not sorted them yet.
Same here...am tempted to start switching them back on to cheer our road up !! They are just icicle lights so just look pretty.
PerfidiousAlbion · 12/01/2021 12:40

I'm doing Candlemas this year, maybe they are too.

DaphneduM · 12/01/2021 12:43

We took our decorations down at the weekend but have left a large wicker reindeer with lights and a few baubles inside for our grandson. Also some fairy lights in the kitchen and my husband has left the lights on in our tree outside, although the wreath on the door has gone. I think of it as a winter celebration still in what is a very dark time of year, this year more than most. Anything that keeps spirits up is good. The pub opposite has just taken all their flashing, over the top ones down, and we really miss them!!!!!

CoronaIsWatching · 12/01/2021 12:43

Our towns xmas lights are all still up. They're very quick to put them up and collect FB likes for their efforts but can never be arsed to take them down after

I have noticed the door wreaths. I think it’s bizarre when you are supposed to take decorations down on 12th Night. They can’t even SEE their silly wreaths.

No she isn't. If she was, she wouldn't be starting a thread on it. I think it is especially tackless this year to mention something like this. People have all sorts of crap going behind closed doors. OP comes across as judgy and out of touch.

RedToothBrush · 12/01/2021 12:45

The latest fashion is to have an orange or black halloween tree. Or a yellow summer tree.

They are no longer restricted to Christmas.

Apparently.

Why this year? Surely it’s something you always do - and whether you do it or not doesn’t change depending on the direction of the wind.

It’s not a matter of being tactless.
Orlania · 12/01/2021 12:48

Well that's the whole point isn't it. Out of sight out of mind. Mines still up. I rarely see it, because covid. So I haven't bothered or remembered to take it down.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 12:49

God, loads of people haven't got much going on. This lockdown is quite limiting in terms of entertainment. Grin

SomewhatBored · 12/01/2021 12:49

Take them down when you like!

Many people are leaving them up till Candlemas this year. That's what we did in the similarly gloomy and plague-ridden Middle Ages.

Thiscantreallybehappening · 12/01/2021 12:49

@Janegrey333

You come across as charming - NOT.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 12:53

I get some people might be rushed off their feet, trying to homeschool, looking after elderly relatives, work from home, stressed.

However, if you've got half an hour to browse Mumsnet you've probably got time to nip outside and take the wreath off your door. Wink

scrivette · 12/01/2021 12:54

Lots of wreaths still up around here, particularly the real ones, I think they look nice and enjoy looking at them.

MIL told me she is getting a 'winter wreath' for her door so maybe it's a new 'thing'.

user1471538283 · 12/01/2021 12:54

Everyone can do as they like but I take ours down quite early because I find it depressing to have it up too long. Some people like them up longer

tinselearedcow · 12/01/2021 12:54

Why this year? Surely it’s something you always do - and whether you do it or not doesn’t change depending on the direction of the wind

Now let me think, why would people be in need of some extra comfort and cheer right now? Hmm. No, can't think of a reason.

YoniAndGuy · 12/01/2021 12:55

Candlemas

Maybe so. But I prefer the down time rather than continuing to push on and take down the decorations. They don't bother me so I can't see why other people should worry about them. I may just leave them up until next Christmas.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 13:02

Fair enough Orlania I like your honesty Grin

Yes I agree, they very well could be. Answers my question.
