To think... take your Christmas decorations down?

Some of my neighbours still have wreaths on their doors. Surely their decorations should come down now?

Any of you still got yours up?

@SmileyClare

I get some people might be rushed off their feet, trying to homeschool, looking after elderly relatives, work from home, stressed.

However, if you've got half an hour to browse Mumsnet you've probably got time to nip outside and take the wreath off your door. Wink

Brilliant!

I'm leaving my tree up until the 6th of February, like the Queen does. I'm well posh Grin.

MerylStropp · 12/01/2021 13:11

The queen keeps hers up till 6th Feb. If it's good enough for Her Maj, it's good enough for me. This sparked my curiosity, but I googled to check if my hunch was correct - the anniversary of her father's death. Sad

Hollyhead · 12/01/2021 13:12

I think of many decs that are just lights/candle or foliage/berry based as 'winter decorations' and think it's nice to have them up until more like February. I would want to take santas/snowmen/ overtly Christmasy things down but actually, if I had the space a winter tree with lights on would really cheery up our house in these dark days, as would house lights/ a wreath etc.

SapphireSeptember · 12/01/2021 13:12

I still have my Halloween decorations up, then I added some tinsel to the mix, and that's still up! It's pretty and sparkly, and I like looking at it . Smile

Janegrey333 · 12/01/2021 13:13

@tinselearedcow

Why this year? Surely it’s something you always do - and whether you do it or not doesn’t change depending on the direction of the wind

Now let me think, why would people be in need of some extra comfort and cheer right now? Hmm. No, can't think of a reason.

Candlemas has religious significance so it is something you mark every year whatever your “needs”.

Candlemas (also spelled Candlemass), also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Feast of the Holy Encounter, is a Christian Holy Day commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple.

CharlotteRose90 · 12/01/2021 13:15

Quite a few of my neighbours and the nearby roads still have them up. Not gonna lie when I’m walking the dog all I think is that people are lazy and can’t be bothered taking them down. It’s a fresh year decorations don’t need to be up until next Christmas

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 13:15

I think you're only allowed to say you're posh like the Queen if you have servants taking your tree down while you're busy knighting people. Wink

fedupandfiredup · 12/01/2021 13:18

My Christmas decorations are still up because I have Covid and pneumonia.

My Mum's Christmas decorations are still up because she has Covid and pneumonia.

My partner's mum's decorations are still up because he has been self isolating for 3 weeks now due to me having Covid and then his two brother's having it. So he hasn't been able to help her take them down.

The rates aren't even that bad round here, so I'm betting there's millions of houses with decorations still up nationwide.

Left our Christmas lights out last year, doing the same this. It's so nice to see the coloured lights when I walk back with the dog - same for DH when he gets it after 10pm. It's a bit of light in the gloom, and several others in the road have done the same. Nothing lazy about it - ours have been left on purpose

herecomesthsun · 12/01/2021 13:23

who cares if they find it at all more cheery?

JaneJeffer · 12/01/2021 13:25

There must be someone you can report them to.
Yes it's called Mumsnet.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 13:25

Sorry to hear that fedupandfiredup That sounds tough. Wishing you a speedy recovery Flowers

GypsyLee · 12/01/2021 13:29

I think wreaths look lovely all winter, they aren't just a Christmas decoration.
I love holly and ivy around the place, it smella beautiful too.
A bit of dried orange in hessian hanging from your radiators is a lovely fragrance.

Lweji · 12/01/2021 13:35

I only have a tiny tree, but haven't had the drive to take it out.
With such a great start to the year, I want Christmas to last till Easter at least. Grin

tinselearedcow · 12/01/2021 13:35

Janegrey333 You might not approve, but I think Jesus would be OK with people finding some comfort in leaving decorations/lights up until Candlemas, even if they haven't ever done so before.

gabsdot45 · 12/01/2021 13:36

I still have the wreath on the door. It's just greenery, I removed the Christmas ribbons etc.
I like the look of it and it hasn't died yet so I'm going to leave it for nother few days.

wanderings · 12/01/2021 13:37

Certain Mumsnetters are simply determined to spread misery every way they can.

tinselearedcow · 12/01/2021 13:37

fedupandfiredup I hope you feel better soon. Flowers

lazeeboy · 12/01/2021 13:40

If you want to have outside lights up to brighten up the miserable dark gloomy winter nights then that is lovely.

Maybe the police could form an opinion on this and fine people sporadically and inconsistently, even though it is not against the law and open to interpretation.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/01/2021 13:41

I've put away the tree but left some lights up because I just want to. I took the Christmas wreath off my front door but I intend to make a spring wreath to replace it.

lazeeboy · 12/01/2021 13:41

Maybe we should investigate whether Boris or any other members of government have their outdoor Christmas lights on still, then we would know if we are also allowed (see: travelling 7 miles for outdoor exercise, perhaps even to barnards castle).

mamakoukla · 12/01/2021 13:41

All the decorations down except the wreath on the front door, which is now a plain green wreath without decorations. It’s awaiting getting closer to spring, which is March, April in these parts. Lights outside still up because it’s souk warming to see bright on long winter nights. My house, my rules, not harming anybody, not breaking any law. If you want your decorations down or not - individual choice. Sometimes it feels as though people decide they make the rules and heavens forbid you don’t do the same. We’re all different, each in our own way. A bit of tolerance and kindness goes a long way. Getting upset about Christmas decorations? I don’t have the energy or inclination for that but it’s clearly a deal breaker for some. Meh... shrugs shoulders and ambles off

Harryfrog12 · 12/01/2021 13:42

Maybe you are my neighbour. I packed all mine away at the end of december and put in the loft. Didnt realise until a few days later id forgotton the wreath. Seen as im barely leaving the house i dont see it as much to remind me. Note to self, when i get 5 mins away from working or home learning i must sort my life out

PracticallyPerfectInZeroWays · 12/01/2021 13:43

Erm. You've just reminded me that the wreath is the one thing I forgot to take down after Christmas!

So, thanks! Grin
