To think... take your Christmas decorations down?

Some of my neighbours still have wreaths on their doors. Surely their decorations should come down now?

Any of you still got yours up?

Who cares? Well our housing association does. We get a letter if they’re up too long. I have one banner up outside still and a small tree and other decor inside. They’ll get put away eventually when I find a moment.

She doesn't at all. She was puzzled and has several times come back saying that she's learned quite a lot from the reponses.

There have certainly been some very judgy posts from other posters.

Not at all. I'm superstitious so usually mine only ever goes up the first weekend in December, and always comes down on the 6th January.
However due to circumstances this time I didn't actually get to finish the tree and turn it on until Christmas Day, I didn’t finish it properly so I was happy with it (doing the last move of lights, making sure it looks right and securing the leads to the table leg so they can't be seen. Tree has to go on a table because of the height of the window) until Boxing Day, and we, well I just hadn't had long enough to enjoy it and couldn’t take it down on the 6th. So I've left the tree up until Candlemas on the 2nd February. Not even sorry. (Everything else, cards, sons Father Christmas sign from the window, ornaments and decorations are all away though). Will start closing the shutters again when I feel we’ve subjected the neighbours to it enough).
I always miss it when I have to take it down, the room feels so empty and dark.

I took my tree down, but there's still a massive pile of needles in the corner of the living room

ForestYeti · 12/01/2021 18:24

Mine are all still up, I’m starting to be ready to take them down but my children want them up a while longer so if it makes them happy they’re staying for a while

ScepticalBandicoot · 12/01/2021 19:04

@HerRoyalNotness out of interest, what is your HA's definition of "too long"?

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 19:19

It's funny that a small number of the posters keeping decs up to keep some Christmas cheer are so angry and defensive when asked about it

.. "why do you care?..none of your business you judgy twat" isn't really in the Christmas spirit or very cheerful Grin

Moonbabyskalimba · 12/01/2021 19:27

All the inside stuff is down, but I still have lights outside (although I don't switch them on). The reason is pure laziness/trying to juggle work and childcare and keep the house reasonably hygienic. They'll come down at the weekend. Maybe...

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 12/01/2021 19:39

Usually take them down after the 6th but they are all still up this year. Kids don't want to take them down and I've been too busy. Will prob take most down this weekend but this year I though bollocks to the rules!

CeibaTree · 12/01/2021 20:28

We've taken everything down (it's been ingrained in me since childhood that leaving the tree decorated after the 6th is terrible luck!), but we've left the snowflake stickers on the windows and front door as they look so pretty, and everything feels so dreary right now!

About a week into January. Most houses have them down now but a few have them still up. They may have given leeway this year as one house had Xmas lights up the morning after Halloween.

Chuckleknuckles · 12/01/2021 23:37

Ours still up. Will leave up til February. It’s lovely and makes me happy. I take what I can get at the moment.

Lovely1a2b3c · 12/01/2021 23:48

@Hollybutnoivy

We still have our tree up. Grin Normally we take it down on 6 Jan but this year I got outvoted. (We have 3 people in this household with January birthdays and none of them are getting a party obviously so leaving the tree up was a compromise).
Ours is still up too! I was going to do the 'Up til Candlemas' thing but have decided that as the days are getting longer and lighter we'll take it down tomorrow and get some flowers for the house instead.

Is your tree up too? Ours is but I'm getting a lot of resistance about keeping it up now so will take it down tomorrow! Also the days are getting longer and lighter so I guess it's okay!

I have to admit that I completely forgot about our wreath on the front door. That is, until the window cleaner knocked and I realised it wa there. To my delight it was still green and lovely. It was made by me and DD, first time we had tike to do so. In the garden bin now. I do like lights in trees/shrubs outside still though.

IDKNABYBIF22 · 13/01/2021 00:03

Some people have wreaths up all year don't they, ones for different seasons. I don't, but I think they look pretty.

OP comes across as "judgy" because she started a thread on the subject and smugly puts "surely their decorations should come down now?"

OP comes across as "out of touch" because I'm assuming she watches the news and knows that these are not normal times and, therefore, getting the decorations down might not be the first thing people are thinking about. Do I really need to spell it out: A LOT of people are ill, have close family members that are ill, looking after elderly relatives, losing businesses, jobs, home schooling, wfh, etc.

IMO the post comes across as petty and condescending.

I absolutely fail to understand how and why op would be "puzzled". Angry

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 13/01/2021 11:09

Yanbu, although these are strange times tbf.

Nonamesavail · 13/01/2021 11:15

My wreath is up as its a winter wreath. I will change it 1st of Feb to another one.

Treaclepie19 · 13/01/2021 11:34

Mine is up. I have a 5yo and a 3 month old and just haven't got it high on my priority list.
Why do you care?

Ruddy heck, talk about a police state! (Oops, for a second there I turned into Rik from The Young Ones. Grin )

I really don't think it should be any of the HA's business when decs are taken down, though. What next - requiring everyone to grow pink geraniums in a hanging basket located precisely two feet to the left of the front door?! Sheesh.

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2021 20:15

We've all had a miserable year, hence decorations went up earlier than usual and have been kept up later than usual.
Christmas trees are probably all but dead now but keeping a few lights up won't hurt.
As to wreaths... they're not just for Christmas. They can be up all year round, depending on what's available to make them.
Pine cones, holly sprigs, for twigs, acorns, berries etc... are available from late summer and early autumn right through to spring.
Let's all enjoy a little natural loveliness.

greenlynx · 13/01/2021 20:23

I actually googled to double check when it’s time to take them down this year.
All our neighbors removed Xmas lights and decorations outside but few still has got wreath on the door. I hope that they are not unwell but just leaving it later.
