To think... take your Christmas decorations down?

Some of my neighbours still have wreaths on their doors. Surely their decorations should come down now?

Any of you still got yours up?

Mine are up and staying up until Lichtmesse as is the tradition in the country I live in.

SmileyClare · 12/01/2021 11:42

@HeronLanyon

Managed to take mine down by 5/6th. Then finally put them all away. BUT I ordered string of small lights which are now up in sitting room as I am staying home wfh and they are beautiful and cheering and weren’t up at Christmas so I’m calling them ‘winter lights’ or something in my mind.
Yes I took all the decs down and I've put some white lights in a tall glass vase in the corner of the front room. I'm calling them classy decorative lights Grin

"I've never heard of candlemas, thanks for enlightening me, very interesting!"

A quick Google of 'when does Christmas end' would have enlightened you. It teminds me of the baby names threads, were perfectly normal baby names are ridiculed because the very insular poster hasn't heard of them.

I leave my living decorations up until Candlemas and last year my window cleaner was constantly going on about my wreath on my door. Wreaths are all year round in some countries, they are welcoming. Some people decorate them seasonally.

Candlemas was widely celebrated when I was younger.

Nordman · 12/01/2021 11:46

In my house we have Christmas decorations until Candlemas. But also, we have lots of seasonal decorations, as in, not specific to Christmas but more brightening up winter. So if it's ok with you Hmm I will keep my wreath up until spring.

Kissthepastrychef · 12/01/2021 11:46

I still have some of my decorations up. At the moment I'm working full time, homeschooling (I only use the key worker provision when absolutely no other option) and caring for my disabled mum. In the limited hours I am in my own house I am making food for both households, supervising online learning, washing for both households and trying to clean my own.

The crimbo decorations will stay up until I have the time and motivation to do it

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 12/01/2021 11:46

Mine were up longer this year. Not for any COVID positivity related reasons, just because we were busy on twelfth night. They came down on Sunday. Usually I’m itching for them to go but I didn’t mind them being around for a little longer this year. Some people will be keeping them up because they really love them and want to keep that feeling going, others will be too busy (or perhaps ill) to take them down. From what I can see from the street, there are only a handful locally with their still up

squeekums · 12/01/2021 11:47

My tree and decorations came down yesterday
Our outside lights stayed up all year, we only took down the big blow up ones

HeronLanyon · 12/01/2021 11:48

smiley classy 😂👍

Chloemol · 12/01/2021 11:52

It’s been a shit year, why not leave it up if it brings them joy?

MrsJBaptiste · 12/01/2021 11:54

I think it's far worse to whip the tree down on Boxing Day than leave it up until mid-January. Our decorations were all down on the 3rd but I think I'll get the lights out again as the windows are just so bare! Glitterball

ramamamadingdong · 12/01/2021 11:56

Leaving mine up for now because they make the kids happy.

Absolutely - there is something so joyless about people taking down decorations on Boxing Day or the day after!
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/01/2021 11:59

Tree and decorations still up here. We normally take them down right after New year's, but last year was so fucking grim and this year is going to be grim too, so we are leaving up until the end of January to make things seem a bit brighter and special.

Why would I google something when I already thought I knew the answer (12 days after Christmas Day). Isn't asking a question on Mumsnet the same thing though!? I'm not the only one who didn't know about candlemas.

I should add, as soon as candlemas was mentioned I googled it to educate myself. Now I'm enlightened ...and a better person for it!

Don't really get why people are so bothered about this. People can do what they like with decorations on their own property, why does it concern you?

I'm not concerned, just wondered as not known it before and thought decorations were taken down on 6th Jan traditionally.

Surely you should just mind your own business...

DappledThings · 12/01/2021 12:19

My church has always kept the tree up till Candlemas.

BuntysTwinkle · 12/01/2021 12:21

I would love to take mine down, but the DC's (and the cat) love them, so we've agreed end of January. They're coming down 31st January as soon as I get up!

CharityDingle · 12/01/2021 12:21

I have small lights still in my front window, they cheer me up amidst the gloom and doom. I would usually take everything down by January 6th.

BeeDavis · 12/01/2021 12:22

What the fuck has it got to do with you? 🙄

luckylavender · 12/01/2021 12:22

Why? Whatever makes you happy.

Rafflesway · 12/01/2021 12:23

Our adult dd has SLD.

We bought her a new fibre optic Christmas Tree this year which we put up for her at the end of November.

We visited her apartment on 06 January and took all the cards down/removed all the baubles from the tree. We then tried to unplug the tree and she was not happy at all. 😁. She was fine with no baubles etc but she loves the tree and flashing lights. We keep asking her if we can take it down to which we receive a scowl and a "Tree plug in" statement growl. (She only has the speech/mentality of a 3 yr old)

Looks like it will still be twinkling away for the rest of the year! 🤣

CrackersDontMatter · 12/01/2021 12:24

I only took mine down yesterday. I've left the lights outside. They're not particularly Christmassy and I'm enjoying having them on. Everything is miserable and The tree lights were cheering me up to be honest. The queen keeps hers up till 6th Feb. If it's good enough for Her Maj, it's good enough for me.

I don't care when anyone takes them down really. Each to their own.
