To think... take your Christmas decorations down?

Some of my neighbours still have wreaths on their doors. Surely their decorations should come down now?

Any of you still got yours up?

I have neighbours that still Have them up. I just presume they are lazy and can’t be bothered.

adeleh · 12/01/2021 13:45

My son has a birthday mid January and sometimes asks if we can keep the tree up until then. It makes him happy. Where's the harm? And why does anyone care what other people do in their own homes?

VestaTilley · 12/01/2021 13:47

Traditionally Christmas decorations stayed up until Candlemas (2 February) so you don’t really have to have them down yet, though we do on Twelfth Night.

It’s still Epiphanytide in Christian churches, so no reason to take your wreath down if you’re still celebrating.

SellFridges · 12/01/2021 13:50

We still have the lights up (although turned off).

We have full time jobs, two primary aged kids with 4+ hours of schooling to complete each day. We are lucky if we manage to leave the house for a walk in daylight, let alone take the lights down.

MollyButton · 12/01/2021 13:56

You can keep them up until Candlemas - and they add some winter cheer this year.

Cosmos45 · 12/01/2021 13:58

My wreath is still up, but mainly because it is so gorgeous I can't bear to take it down. However my front door is not facing a road and we are down the end of a long drive so no-one really see's it apart from delivery drivers. A friend made mine this year, it was a fresh one (probably not so fresh now) and is beautiful. So it is staying up until god knows when.

iwishiwasatcentralperk · 12/01/2021 13:59

I still have lights stuck to my window, but haven't had them on since 12th Night. I am working long days and haven't had time to take them down yet.

topspeed · 12/01/2021 14:07

@mamakoukla

All the decorations down except the wreath on the front door, which is now a plain green wreath without decorations. It’s awaiting getting closer to spring, which is March, April in these parts. Lights outside still up because it’s souk warming to see bright on long winter nights. My house, my rules, not harming anybody, not breaking any law. If you want your decorations down or not - individual choice. Sometimes it feels as though people decide they make the rules and heavens forbid you don’t do the same. We’re all different, each in our own way. A bit of tolerance and kindness goes a long way. Getting upset about Christmas decorations? I don’t have the energy or inclination for that but it’s clearly a deal breaker for some. Meh... shrugs shoulders and ambles off
What makes you think I'm upset? I asked a question and have taken all answers on board. If you were confused about something you'd endeavour to find out, wouldn't you?

@fedupandfiredup

My Christmas decorations are still up because I have Covid and pneumonia.

My Mum's Christmas decorations are still up because she has Covid and pneumonia.

My partner's mum's decorations are still up because he has been self isolating for 3 weeks now due to me having Covid and then his two brother's having it. So he hasn't been able to help her take them down.

The rates aren't even that bad round here, so I'm betting there's millions of houses with decorations still up nationwide.

I am so sorry to hear this and am very sorry if I offended you. Wishing you all a speedy recovery.

Funnily enough I just realised today I still have a Santa window sticker waving from the kitchen Grin I had become completely blind to it

famousforwrongreason · 12/01/2021 14:12

@Tenyearsgone

There must be someone you can report them to.
Lol 😂
topspeed · 12/01/2021 14:15

Glad this thread has helped those of you who had forgotten to take all your decorations down Grin

fiftiesmum · 12/01/2021 14:15

Mine are staying up until Candlemas or pandemic reducing substantially in our area - haven't got the energy to take them down after a day on the wards

bobbojobbo · 12/01/2021 14:17

I think it’s bizarre when you are supposed to take decorations down on 12th Night. They can’t even SEE their silly wreaths

Who says we are supposed to? And you can't see the "silly" wreaths at Xmas either, so whats the difference now?

mamakoukla · 12/01/2021 14:19

topspeed for me, it’s the way the language used reads. For example “Surely their decorations should come down now?” Meh... they clearly don’t think so for whatever reason/s. No biggie apart from offending other people’s personal choices. I used to avidly adhere to twelfth night but then realized it was something I was taught to adhere to. And chose not to because it didn’t work for me any longer. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone with my flagrant and outrageous breach of tradition Glitterball Grin

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 12/01/2021 14:22

My fairy lights will be up until the battery runs out in them!

Bluesername · 12/01/2021 14:24

If I were being perfectionist I'd go for 24th December to 12th Night, the 12 days of Christmas. I usually decorate mid December though as it's so busy after then. If I decorated any sooner I'd have had enough of decorations by the time it was actually Christmas! At least the persistent decorations well into January make a change from those in October/November, but you have to wonder whether they'll meet in the middle one day Grin

ScepticalBandicoot · 12/01/2021 14:37

Everything (except anything Advent-related) goes up on Christmas Eve and down on Candlemas here. The tree is still looking beautiful. If it doesn't last the full six weeks we'll take it down earlier, but otherwise everything else will stay up, door wreath and all. Not everyone has been celebrating Christmas since November. I would find January terribly bleak without the Christmas and Epiphany season. Looking forward to making mince pies and mulled wine again soon.

If we had the "Santa Stop Here" type decorations I admit they would look a bit odd by February. Grin

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 12/01/2021 14:45

Weve still got the small real tree we bought up in the dining room with lights on, the big artificial one that goes in the window came down on new years day but my kids love the little one and it makes them happy so it can stay, its not harming anyone so stop judging people OP

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 12/01/2021 15:12

My trees are down, but I've kept my fairy lights up to combat the gloom, and I'll leave my wreath up till it falls apart - it's a real one, just leaves and berries. More wintery than Christmassy anyway.

calamariandchilledwine · 12/01/2021 15:20

Yup. We had a shit Christmas and ended up burnt out from trying to make everything "perfect" to compensate for 2020 so we've decided to enjoy things for a bit longer, seeing as we're all WFH and have nothing else to do. It's nice having twinkly lights on when it gets dark, plus the tree was bloody expensive and I want to get my money's worth!

CSIblonde · 12/01/2021 15:34

Meh. Who cares. The cats obsessed with the tinsel still round the mirror & wall pictures etc & it stops her crying 24/7 for me to play with her. I don't mind a daily play session FGS, but now its sodding constant as she won't go out when it's this cold.

Bluebird1234 · 12/01/2021 16:03

My door wreath is still up because it’s real, it was expensive and it’s not overtly Christmassy (think natural not red). It’ll stay up till it doesn’t look good anymore

lollipoprainbow · 12/01/2021 16:03

Mine have come down today my front room looks so gloomy without the glorious six foot tree and gorgeous lights I miss it so much I'm almost teary about it, silly I know!!
