NYT:

'"Behind closed doors, [Trump] made clear that he would not resign and expressed regret about releasing a video on Thursday committing to a peaceful transition of power and condemning the violence at the Capitol that he had egged on a day before."'

USA has a history of the useful and right kind of Nazis being lauded, welcomed and accepted with their past white washed from existence.
Wagner Von Braun is a prime example.

Why would they start recognising it now?
They have proven that’s it’s acceptable to be a card carrying Nazi party and SS officer and war criminal as long as your useful.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/01/2021 13:28

For some reason this scene keeps coming to mind ... can’t think why

PerkingFaintly · 09/01/2021 13:29

Wernher Von Braun. (Yes, I do only know because of the song...)

Ahh, Tom Lehrer Smile

Now, there's one of my heroes.

Thank you, you are correct.
My phone was unhelpfully correcting me and I didn’t proof read!

If your interested “Making of the Nazis” is a really interesting Doco series (No Hitler just everyone s around him that enabled him be what he was)

It goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay deeper than that. US ties with Nazi firms in the 1930s for a start (Hello Bush snr snr ... )

www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/12/05/intr-d05.html

Then of course, Joe Kennedy was busy telling Roosevelt that Britain was done for and the US should link up with that nice Mr. Hitler. (No fool Churchill had Kennedys messages intercepted and was able to refute them ... Roosevelt eventually recalled Kennedy. Although it has to be said Joe Kennedy Jnr. died a hero over Britain as a USAF pilot).

And Hitler was a big Ford fan. Although the only other material he seemed to have read in the bunker was the British Beveridge Report, which Hitler noted was an almost perfect plan for a social care system ....)

When you dig into history, you can see why (a) "They" don't want you to study it and (b) why it's turned into very rigid narratives.

The Doco has frightening parallels to Trumps rise and the use of the same Tactics.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 09/01/2021 13:45

So just like Trumps slogan “Make a America great again” (Reagan’s slogan) his tactics are a rehash as well.

@Roussette

I, too, am perplexed at how Jared and Ivanka can square all this neo nazi stuff. Ivanka converted to Juadaism, their children are brought up in the jewish faith, yet she can stand next to her father prior to him going out at his 'rally' and stare intently at the crowd, some of whom were wearing nazi signs.
I think there are two elements.
  1. a lack of empathy and historical understanding

  2. a desire to benefit from the support of neo-nazis accompanied by a belief that somehow they will be exempt from anti-Semitic attacks (due to money, power, influence whatever). I think it is similar to people wishing themselves into a police state (c.f. Covid threads) - they believe that they will be on the 'right side and it is others who will be punished.
But of course mobs and police states are not controllable once their out of the bag there is no guarantee they wont turn on you (source: history!)

Sorry if already posted. You're too fast.

Well done, pilot.
Behave or be dumped in the middle of Kansas, Trump fans.

I still don’t get why Trump has pressed the self destruct button. If he’d handed over to Biden amicably then at least he might have had the chance to run again in 2024 (or for one of his offspring to run). As it is he’s totally screwed everything with this insane behaviour and his future is surely in tatters. What an idiot!

Someone mentioned he might flee the country earlier on the thread. Let’s just hope he doesn’t move to Scotland!!

I don't think trump deliberately and knowingly pressed the self-destruct button he just acts on Impulses and he doesn't have the cognitive processing power to act strategically over the long-term

@Roussette

Is this a surprise? I don't think so

Meanwhile, a current Metro D.C. police officer on the scene yesterday said in a public Facebook post that off-duty police officers and members of the military, who were among the rioters, flashed their badges and I.D. cards as they attempted to overrun the Capitol.

there is what a believe authentic video of Capitol police (security guards or something) just opening the doors to protestors. They weren't smashed in
AcrossthePond55 · 09/01/2021 14:02

Thanks for the new thread!

Once again y'all have 'sped through the last thread'. I blame the time difference which means I'm sleeping as you're all madly posting. But on the plus side, it gives me plenty of links to update myself when I wake up.

Someone mentioned above about Javanka and the antisemitism of the MAGA crowd. It's simple; money talks, the rest walks. Their 'religious faith' doesn't stand a chance when it's put up against any chance to make money and/or increase their 'social status'. Unfortunately for them it looks as though it's all exploded in their faces, thanks to Daddy Dearest.

I wish Schumer could take over as Senate Majority Leader now, but that can't happen until Ossoff and Warnock are seated.

Roussette · 09/01/2021 14:02

www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2021/01/inaction-capitol-police-was-design/617590/

The mob attacks on the Capitol are not so much “unprecedented” as they are consistent with America’s history of white backlash to racial equality and white entitlement to political, economic, and social control. It is not a coincidence that on the same day of the riot, the first Black and Jewish Americans were elected to Senate seats in Georgia. Wednesday’s violence claims no legitimate grievances. It is merely the perpetual retaliation to racial progress, as evidenced by the insurrectionists’ parading of Trump flags, Confederate flags, Gadsden flags, Blue Lives Matter flags, and neo-Nazi symbols. This was not an uprising against a tyrannical government; it was an uprising against a multicultural government. And the police reaction—calm, measured, tolerant—to that uprising suggests that when it comes to engaging in violence against the state, white perpetrators have nothing to lose.

Oh so true

I think IBM and the Holocaust should be compulsory reading for anyone working in Big Tech.

And anyone not working in Big Tech.

It's long, but anyone reading it will see how it has informed my thinking on these threads passim.

The tl;dr is:
• That number tattooed on concentration camp inmates' arms? It's their Hollerith (IBM) number, to match their punched cards.
• How did the Nazies locate and round up Jewish people so quickly and effectively as they occupied new territories? Hollerith punch cards – used initially for innocent ordinary censuses and subsequently for registration of occupied peoples.

PerkingFaintly · 09/01/2021 14:04

Here's a rather shorter piece on the current generation's need to face up to similar challenges:

Maths and tech specialists need Hippocratic oath, says academic
www.theguardian.com/science/2019/aug/16/mathematicians-need-doctor-style-hippocratic-oath-says-academic-hannah-fry

Fry said she got a sense of the ethical blindspots scientists can have while describing to an academic conference in Berlin the computer modelling of the 2011 riots she had done for the Metropolitan police. The audience, which understood the realities of a police state, heckled her from their seats.

When Fry returned to London, she realised how mathematicians, computer engineers and physicists are so used to working on abstract problems that they rarely stop to consider the ethics of how their work might be used.

The issue has become urgent now that researchers are building systems that gather and sell personal data, exploit human frailties, and take on life-or-death decisions. “We’ve got all these tech companies filled with very young, very inexperienced, often white boys who have lived in maths departments and computer science departments,” Fry said.

“They have never been asked to think about ethics, they have never been asked to consider how other people’s perspectives of life might be different to theirs, and ultimately these are the people who are designing the future for all of us.”

Roussette · 09/01/2021 14:05

That's interesting Across. I have read in more than one place that to Ivanka, social status is absolutely everything.
I think she might well be disappointed. I can't imagine New York society will be welcoming her back.

Poor thing...
