He's clearly suffering from a severe mental health issue.
It's astounding that he got to a position of power in the first place obviously, but now his delusions are absolutely off the scale.
He genuinely believes that the election results were a conspiracy, very publicly announced that it was a landslide victory in his favour when it so blatantly wasn't.
He obviously has a long history of utter lunacy, but reading his tweets and seeing recent events makes it clear that he's mentally unwell and a danger to himself and others.

His behaviour hasn't come out of nowhere. Look at how he acted over the golf course in Aberdeenshire and when he presented "evidence" at Scottish government on an off shore wind farm - he claimed he didn t need evidence because "I am the evidence".

He has always got what he wanted and never been held accountable for anything. His actions destroyed a protected environment and he took no responsibility and was not held to account.

It's not just Trump who should be held to account but those who supported him in order to get their own ambitions realised.

FilthyforFirth · 09/01/2021 12:45

In my uneducated or diagnosed opinion he is a narcisist (cant spell that word!) which he wont ever be 'recovered' from even with treatment.

I dont believe he needs to be committed as his increasingly batshit behaviour is 100% related to the fact that as soon as he is no longer president he loses immunity and will be facing several lawsuits, some of them federal.

My personal opinion is that everything he has done for the past 12 months is due to a worry of being jailed.

pleasefeedthecat · 09/01/2021 12:55

You can't be committed for having a personality disorder. If he's broken the law, then he can be sent to jail. I think he should be in jail. I really hope they manage to secure a conviction.

And Melania divorces him as well.

Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt recently wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The excerpt is in accordance with the magazine's policy.

The 14 characteristics are:

Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .

Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections

Cam2020 · 09/01/2021 13:14

I think he was arrogant to begin with, but the power, coupled with having 'supporters' and yes men around him, has tipped him over the edge in the way that celebrities sometimes do.

If he seriously suspected foul play and thought he had evidence, he had every right to question the election result, but it's up to the court to decide whether those concerns are valid or not, not him. If the court says the election was fine, that outcome must be respected. His actions are disturbing.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/01/2021 18:48

I don't think he's any different than at the beginning Confused

He's a monstrous, petulant narcissist. He cannot conceive he lost, so convinced is he of his own superiority.

He has very obviously had narcissistic personality disorder for a LONG time.

sueelleker · 09/01/2021 20:25

I've been thinking this for the last couple of years.

hansgrueber · 09/01/2021 20:32

He's clearly suffering from a severe mental health issue.

Stop making excuses for him, I think he knows exactly what he's doing, he has spent most of his adult life in business bullying and cheating with few challenging him.

LickEmbysmiling · 09/01/2021 20:34

I think sedating, and a straight jacket.

Calming down and time to reflect.
I know this will sound crazy but does anyone really believe that let's say, he could have run on a democrat ticket 4 years ago, he wouldn't have? And it could just as easily be antifa as his mob?. He strikes me as a woolley narc who doesn't care what team he bat's for.... Just who loves him.. He happened to go on republican ticket...

He's not actually politically minded at all! I bet if you asked him the philosophy behind the parties, he wouldn't have a clue!
He's clueless.
Someone said on TV re worries he will have influence one he goes and someone said no.. No because there is no trumpism.

He doesn't espouse any political beliefs or philosophy! So he's nothing like Hitler or stalin or chairman mao or polpot.. He's a wacky, out of kilter rich man who got Lucky.

lyralalala · 09/01/2021 20:40

Yes - doesn't he get a lifetime salary for being a former President?

He'll get a pension of around $200,000 a year. Plus secret service security for life

The bigger problem for the Americans is that former Presidents generally get high level security briefings for life. He can't be trusted with that kind of info

OhWhyNot · 09/01/2021 23:00

Trump will be gone very soon

The bigger worry is that someone smarter will come along to take his place, who will use his rhetoric but shall be a better politician. Let’s not forget that Trump despite the last four years received more votes than anyone else In a presidential campaign apart from Biden

America wasn’t united before, Trump didn’t create the divisions he just added a lot of fuel to the fire

MadameBlobby · 09/01/2021 23:04

@DanielODonkey

Nope. Because then he will not have to deal with the consequences and repercussions of his actions and the actions of those acting on his words.

He needs to be stripped of Potus Status to remove any benefit to him of his awful 4 year power trip. And he needs to be judged and made to justify what he did and not allowed to weasel out.

I hate that man. And getting committed means he has an easy and sympathetic way out. He doesn't deserve it.

His children and his wife need to be taken to account too for their actions either direct actions or in supporting his actions. He hasn't been alone in this. And I don't buy the "poor Melania" stuff either. He was abhorrent when she married him.

Basically Donald doesn't get an easy way out.

Totally agree

Hopefully his rancid family will now disappear into oblivion at least

HollowTalk · 09/01/2021 23:07

It's always been obvious that there is something seriously wrong with him. I did find it funny that he said before the election if he lost it was because there was fraud and if he won it was because everybody loved him.

MadameBlobby · 09/01/2021 23:08

There was not electoral fraud fgs

Guylan · 09/01/2021 23:28

I would like to read this book sometime www.amazon.co.uk/Hiding-Plain-Sight-Invention-Erosion/dp/1250210712/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&s=books&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1610234178&refinements=p_27%3ASARAH+KENDZIOR&sr=1-1

Trump is Machiavellian, huge ego, wants absolute power. Republican Party have enabled him.

MissConductUS · 09/01/2021 23:37

For us it was - fuck me, how much do the USA hate Hilary that they would vote in this arsehole

She's a very polarizing figure. I am not a fan but I held my nose and voted for her. And it wasn't quite as obvious in 2016 that Trump was unhinged as it is now.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 09/01/2021 23:58

There needs to be a way where he is taken out and prosecuted. Also a way in which he can't run again or indeed any of his kids...

I think it was telling that in USA the number of psychiatrists /psychologists were so convinced of his danger to society they broke Goldwater rules! That's a major thing for a professional to do!

Spidey66 · 10/01/2021 00:17

No, he needs to be imprisoned for inciting a riot.

blueangel19 · 10/01/2021 00:24

all DGRossetti controlled mass media? Sorry but one point made
from the Republicans have been precisely that the media has always been bias towards Trump. Let”s be honest Trump was hated from even before the elections. The media, Hollywood, tech companies. With Biden you find they all support him blindly.. Even the Me too movement pretends normality about his kids sniffing.( cringe) I can only imagine if Trump would do that to kids.

I really wish America finally moves on from Trump. Enough is enough. It didn’t work. It was doomed to fail. It is way too toxic. However, I really expect from all these people to have Biden and Harris on check. Not to have double standards and to be objective.

These threats of vendetta and speculation are childish and toxic. Cut the cancer and move on.

alibongo5 · 10/01/2021 00:26

@zigzagbetty

He needs to be impeached even for the short time left so he loses his security detail, protection and allowances he will get as a past president.
Yep.
MissConductUS · 10/01/2021 00:42

He needs to be impeached even for the short time left so he loses his security detail, protection and allowances he will get as a past president.

He can, and likely will be impeached after his term is over with the same effect. And on the issue of security briefings for former presidents, they are done by custom, not law. Biden will certainly not allow it.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 10/01/2021 01:26

Also if he’s impeached he won’t be able stand for election again in future.

MustardMitt · 10/01/2021 02:00

I said something similar to my mum earlier. If I were being generous I'd say he was maybe in the throes of dementia, but I don't actually believe that, I believe he has some sort of grandiose narcissism, which has been built up over 70 years of being treated like some sort of king.

He is dangerous, his followers are cult-like and dangerous, and he needs to be impeached.

ChestnutStuffing · 10/01/2021 02:14

I think he's always had something like a personality disorder. But I also have thought that he may well have dementia. His behaviour is bizarre, but I also have seen old interviews with him and he seems to have had, for example, a much larger vocabulary.

However, then he will go and do something that is effective and even brilliant in a horrible sort of way - he seems to know just what buttons to push to expose the Democrat's weaknesses, for example.
