Neighbours pissed off - AIBU?

Our local authority encourages asymptomatic testing, so before Christmas we ordered home testing kits, expecting to see DH's elderly parents. We got moved to tier 4 so there was no point in doing the test. We did nothing over Christmas, DH did a quick dash to the shops twice, I took our toddler to the playground on the 23rd and we got a few takeaway coffees from the local cafe. Other than that, we went for a daily walk either in the woods or small local park.
On the 27th DH complained headache but he had been up with DC at night who had been teething. Otherwise we were all healthy (and the headache passed during the day).
On New Year's Eve we decided to send off our Covid tests anyway as we had them lying around, and DC was due back in nursery on the 4th and I was due at work on the 3rd. After dropping them off, we went for a walk in the park and met a couple few doors down who have a DC same age. We kept a distance, chatted for about 10 minutes with the kids running around. Our tests came back in the 2nd and to our horror, DH tested positive. I and DC were both negative. We told the neighbours we met (also called the cafe we had visited) and the neighbours got furious with us. Absolutely fuming, they said we were irresponsible for being out after doing a Covid test and DH had been symptomatic (he hadn't). I get that they are stressed about getting Covid but if they are that concerned maybe they shouldn't go out at all as our contact was short and distanced, and I told them that because I was getting a bit fed up - their messages were coming through more and more irritated and frantic (DH was much more diplomatic)
AIBU for being annoyed at the neighbours? I tried to stay diplomatic but I felt they totally overreacted.

@hardboiledeggs that list includes fatigue. Would you go for a test because you felt really tired one day? I wouldn't. Likewise my headache after using the computer, isn't, on its own, likely to mean Covid.

There are strong indicators of Covid, and there are smaller symptoms that can come along with it, or rarely, be the only symptom. But I don't think it's reasonable to get angry with anyone for not having a test because they simply felt tired, or with another person who only had a mild headache for a couple of hours.

InFiveMins · 09/01/2021 17:25

YANBU. If they were afraid to catch it they should have stayed indoors. They could pick it up from anywhere anyway. Tell them to do one and block them.

hardboiledeggs · 09/01/2021 17:36

@saraclara bit of common sense would need to be used. Consistent headache yes. Just putting the info on as no one seems to know. @supersonicginandtonic again common sense would need to be used. The op felt that a test was needed even if it was an after thought so common sense would tell you to stop putting other people at risk cause you went to the shop. Too many people looking just looking to argue on this thread.

I didn’t have symptoms thanks so keep your comments to yourself. It was done through work as one of my team had symptoms and that’s what we got told by a health professional so I’ll listen to them.

Hapixmas · 09/01/2021 17:50

You did nothing wrong op!

My apologies OP I was replying to someone but I have no idea who though. That wasn’t aimed at you
nicebreeze · 09/01/2021 18:24

@Coffeeandcrumpet

You don't have to isolate if you take asymptomatic tests that's madness! And one headache is not a normal reason for a test, I can't see you've done anything wrong here as long as you were social distancing.
This - YANBU, op.
nicebreeze · 09/01/2021 18:25

@HavfrueDenizKisi

You were totally fine OP. For those ranting that you had to isolate: they clearly cannot read and understand the correct info. You are asked to isolate of you have one or more of the three key symptoms- which your DH did not.

I've done 5 tests via the Covid Zoe app - all die to me reporting other things like a headache or sore throat and they've asked me to test. I do so because they need data - positive and negative. (So far they've all been negative). Of course I haven't had to isolate each time. Completely different if I presented with the key symptoms.

Your neighbours are losing the plot as are some posters here

He had one off headache AND they did test as part of mass testing later.
Take your own advice on common sense before you start calling people stupid

You should self isolate if you are testing because of contact with positive person. Again. Different situation to a mass testing situation
SweetpeaMidnight · 09/01/2021 18:43

They think he tested because he was symptomatic, so it's not unreasonable they are annoyed based on this. Why do they think he was symptomatic when he tested? Especially if your LA is encouraging asymptomatic testing.

supersonicginandtonic · 09/01/2021 19:28

@hardboiledeggs the OP DID NOT do the test due to symptoms she did it as part of a community based asymptomatic cases scheme.

@CharlotteRose90 I am a health professional which is why I know what I am talking about. Idiots getting tested when they didn't have one of the 3 main symptoms was the reason people were struggling to get tests last year.
Oh and you may notice you forgot to mention you had your test because you had been in contact with somebody. Drip feeding at its best 🙄

Winederlust · 09/01/2021 19:57

Apparently the average reading age of the adult UK population is 11. After reading this thread I can totally believe it.

Lindy2 · 09/01/2021 20:08

Winederlust Completely off topic but age 11 is not quite as bad a statistic as it initally seems. Most 11 year olds are fluent readers. You can't actually increase that much from fluent. I think age 13 is as high as the measurement actually goes.

I do however agree with you about people not actually reading what's written in threads though.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/01/2021 20:12

That's actually interesting @Lindy2
I found this. I remember entry level 3 from ESL and wonder if it's the same level or different for natives. It was pretty basic if my memory is right.

I like when debates turn like this. Always learn something new😁

Winederlust · 09/01/2021 20:14

There's a difference from reading fluently and actually fully understanding what you're reading though i believe.
The actual reading comprehension on MN in general and this thread in particular is shocking

I got email from my local authority today who are offering tests to people who are having to go to work. No symptoms required and my role fell into the very limited 'other' category. They booked me in for test on Saturday no problems

I think I’ll be suffering from a headache tomorrow as there’s a large glass of wine calling. I won’t be isolating on the back of it though
