I love my DH, but he's said he wants to call our baby Marrack if we have a boy (apparently Gfather name). I've vetoed it, won't he be bullied!? AIBU?

You don't have to call your child any name you don't like. Full stop.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 07/01/2021 15:44

I don't know if he'll be bullied, but it's a terrible name so well done you for vetoing it. Maybe another name that starts with M. Max, Michael, Martin (keeps the middle R too), Matthew. Or make it his middle name.

DappledThings · 07/01/2021 15:50

It's not my favourite name but I don't see why he'd be bullied. It's not that out there. Or am I missing something?

Mrsjayy · 07/01/2021 15:51

Where does the name originate ?if you don't like it of course veto it but would you consider it a middle name if it is a family name it is important to your husband.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/01/2021 15:51

You don’t have to call your baby any name you don’t like but what’s it about that name that would mean he’s bullied? It’s a normal name isn’t it, apart from I’ve never seen it spelt like that before.

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 07/01/2021 15:52

I really like it. Why would he be bullied?

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/01/2021 15:52

You can veto any name you don’t like. Can’t see why a child called Marrack would be bullied, though - it doesn’t have any particularly funny / offensive connotations, doesn’t sound rude or unpleasant; is just more commonly a surname than a given name - which isn’t especially unusual nowadays.

Justcallmebebes · 07/01/2021 15:53

Can you make it his middle name? My grandson has a bloody awful middle name as it was his paternal great grandfather's name. Daughter compromised and used it as middle name but doesn't use it on any official documentation (if that makes sense). I think she hopes it will be quietly forgotten.

My sister in law wanted to call her last child Brick if it was a boy. I was gutted at the thought of having to call a nephew Brick. Luckily she had a girl and gave her a perfectly normal name

Absolute LOL at Martin being a better name. Martin is a terrible name!
Mrsjayy · 07/01/2021 15:53

I don't see why he would be bullied .

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/01/2021 15:54

I was just trying to work out why Marrick sounded familiar and realised it’s because I went to sixth form college with a boy named Merrick Hamilton - now there’s a name! He certainly wasn’t bullied over it.

Xmassprout · 07/01/2021 15:54

Not the worse name I've ever heard (by a long stretch) but not something I would choose personally.

But why are you asking if you're being unreasonable? If you don't like a name you don't like a name. I wouldn't choose a name I don't like for my child

Changethetoner · 07/01/2021 15:55

I've never heard it before. It's like Barrack - O'Bama. sort of.
My feelings on it? meh. I'd rather choose a traditional first name, not a surname, though I acknowledge this trend is increasing in popularity.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 07/01/2021 15:56

Well, yeah, but it's better than Marrack. Marty isn't too bad. You can say it's a Back to the Future reference.

notalwaysalondoner · 07/01/2021 15:56

I know a Polish Marrack - not sure it's spelled the same way. It's a fine name, but if you don't like it, don't use it. The same way that if you loved the name Milo and he hated it, you wouldn't use it. It's irrelevant if it's a family name although I'd maybe compromise if it was someone super close like a dead parent or sibling AND it was a middle name AND I didn't hate it.

Carysmatthews · 07/01/2021 15:58

I went to school with a Merrick and have worked with a Marek.

june2007 · 07/01/2021 15:58

You can veto a name you don,t like. I am sure he will veto ones you like. Marrack is ok. I don,t see why he would be bullied. Things change anyway. At school a lad was rubbed when it was found out he had a middle name Roman, but now Roman is quite popular.

SecretMaccies · 07/01/2021 16:00

It reminds me of Maverick.

SecretMaccies · 07/01/2021 16:00

But obviously YANBU to not call your child a name you don't like

PenCreed · 07/01/2021 16:01

If it was his grandfather, a complete veto sounds harsh - use it as a middle name instead?
I'd never heard of the name and so I googled it, if your DH is related to Marrack Goulding then that's quite a legacy to be remembered.

HKW81 · 07/01/2021 16:01

If you work in certain professions it's not a great name, first thing I thought of was a MARAC meeting unfortunately. That might be niche in certain professions though.

Want2beme · 07/01/2021 16:01

It's kind of nice having an unusual name. Is it a West Country surname?

KirstenBlest · 07/01/2021 16:02

I'd use the Marek spelling

Sally872 · 07/01/2021 16:06

Marek seems nicer than Marrack but I haven't heard of either and not my taste. Not so unusual I would think child would be bullied though.

Yanbu to say no to anytime you don't like. And if you didn't even know his GF there may be others closer you would name after eg either of your dad's, your dh if not then a marek as a middle name is a nice gesture.

ncbby · 07/01/2021 16:06

I know a Polish Marrack - not sure it's spelled the same way.

Yeah I reckon you mean Marek, that's a more common Polish variant.
