I love my DH, but he's said he wants to call our baby Marrack if we have a boy (apparently Gfather name). I've vetoed it, won't he be bullied!? AIBU?

Quite common as a surname around Penzance though.

Zandathepanda · 07/01/2021 16:31

Maracas
That’s the only thing I can think of that he maybe teased with and I really overthink names. Do like Mack as a nickname.

iguanadonna · 07/01/2021 16:33

My relatives on one side are from the West Country and all the males were called Ham. So Marrack is a pretty smooth escape.

If I heard it I'd assume it was Marek, though, which is a nice Polish name.

MissMarpleDarling · 07/01/2021 16:33

Its not a nice sounding name is it 🙈

Cam2020 · 07/01/2021 16:34

I don't think potential bullying is a reason to veto a name - people get bullied for all sorts of reasons and innocuous names get turned into horrid nicknames. Not liking a name is a perfectly good enough reason though.

WeAreShiningStars · 07/01/2021 16:34

I kind of like Merrick as a name ; think it's a bit nicer looking as a name than 'Marrack'. And I like Merryn.

kirktonhouse · 07/01/2021 16:36

Just call him Mark and move to Suffolk - they'll pronounce it Marrack anyway.

percheron67 · 07/01/2021 16:36

Terrible name. Probably be called Obama at school and told that the spelling of his name is wrong.

OhBollocksToIt · 07/01/2021 16:36

You can veto any name you don’t like for any reason.

orangenasturtium · 07/01/2021 16:37

Marrack is Cornish @Blue565. It means knight. It's more commonly a surname though.

The warden of my college was called Marrack. And actually a knight. He was the former Under Secretary General of the UN.

VividImagination · 07/01/2021 16:39

You could call him Marrack and use Marr or Mack for every day use. I think it’s an ok name. Different with out being a silly made up name.

justchecking1 · 07/01/2021 16:39

I used to work with a South African man named Marrack. He was gorgeous 😋😋

BrumBoo · 07/01/2021 16:41

It just reminds me of Team America.

'You have disappointed me Marrick Bawdwin!'

I'd probably just go with Mark or Marcus as a compromise. Or completely say no, I did with my husband's male line names, they are all just awful. Wouldn't even compromise on a 'never spoken again' middle name, though I did give my husband the choice of pick on the shortlists we did have.

Terracottasaur · 07/01/2021 16:42

It’s no worse than a lot of the abysmal shite you see on the MN baby names board, but you’re totally entitled to veto any name you don’t like for any reason!

Spidey66 · 07/01/2021 16:43

I don't like it but would be prepared to have it as a middle name for sentimental reasons

CuntingSeal · 07/01/2021 16:43

My first thought was also MARAC

Not a nice association

Saz12 · 07/01/2021 16:44

I must be the only one who likes it! Sounds like someone who’d be a wild, sea-faring wilderness-liking but sensible tall flame-haired... oooh, dear, I might come over all inappropriate.

MargeryMcLatchie · 07/01/2021 16:45

I don't think it's awful. Unusual yes, but there is definitely a move towards unusual names for kids these days. It won't stand out in a class.

Daphnise · 07/01/2021 16:45

Why does it have to be used because it was the grandfather's name?

It's a dreadful name.

Biscusting · 07/01/2021 16:45

My DH wanted to call our DD Jugula Hmm

Sinful8 · 07/01/2021 16:45

@GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom

Absolute LOL at Martin being a better name. Martin is a terrible name!

Well, yeah, but it's better than Marrack. Marty isn't too bad. You can say it's a Back to the Future reference.

Yeah the character who's mum wants to share him, can't see anything kids could use there
littlepattilou · 07/01/2021 16:45

@FreakyZoey95 Ewww what an awful name. Sounds like a naff budget chocolate bar.

YANBU.

Sinful8 · 07/01/2021 16:46

Sigh, shag not share

oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 16:46

Marrack...Never heard of it before, but it sounds very Masculine and noble!

Kindlethefourth · 07/01/2021 16:47

Use as a middle name. Middle names are only ever important to parents when thinking up names. In real life they hardly ever feature unless for some reason you participate hate your given first name! Then you can quietly drop it (I speak from experience).
