I love my DH, but he's said he wants to call our baby Marrack if we have a boy (apparently Gfather name). I've vetoed it, won't he be bullied!? AIBU?

@Terracottasaur

It’s no worse than a lot of the abysmal shite you see on the MN baby names board, but you’re totally entitled to veto any name you don’t like for any reason!
I love baby names on mn! Usually it's the 'mad yoonique' vs the 'vary middle class but yoonique' Grin.

'I'm considering Albatross, Kvotuir (pronounced Water), or Michael'

Replies 'urgh Kvotuir sounds made up (you don't say), and Michael is boring. Albatross could be Albie? I like more normal names, like Stanley or Wilbert, because apparently I'm giving birth to a retired banker'.

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 07/01/2021 16:51

He will hate you for it. It’s so annoying having to spell out and explain your name to people.

oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 16:52

Think of ''Teasibility'' ratings...I can't think of any re Marrack

..Martin {Are any boys called 'Martin these days?} becomes ''Fartin' Martin'' and ''Bear'' 'with a sore head' 'Bear behind''
''Can't Bear'' &c.. Huge playground tease ability there.

@Biscusting

My DH wanted to call our DD Jugula Hmm
Shock

Why not Ventricle or Bile-duct? Grin

Marrack Obama.

oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 16:55

Very 'Old man's' names like 'Wilfred' are on the up. Rather sweet name though.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 07/01/2021 16:55

@MLMsuperfan

Marrack Obama.
Oh, very good.
oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 16:56

@MLMsuperfan

Marrack Obama.
Yes, I thought of Obama too ..
Lougle · 07/01/2021 16:56

I've never heard that name, but I really like it!

littlepattilou · 07/01/2021 16:56

@Kindlethefourth

Use as a middle name. Middle names are only ever important to parents when thinking up names. In real life they hardly ever feature unless for some reason you participate hate your given first name! Then you can quietly drop it (I speak from experience).
Good idea. My friend's nan AND her DH's nan have quite... umm ... frumpy names, and both of them said they want their first grandaughter to have THEIR name. So my friend and her DH called her the Christian name/forename they wanted, and used their grandmother's names as middle names. They couldn't complain, as the names were there on the birth certificate. Grin
oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 16:57

''Jugula?''

Seriously..

''Aorta?'' :)

My 20-something DD knows 2 Wilfreds... Both 26 to 28 y.o.

Cute actually. They're both called Wilf.

CleverCatty · 07/01/2021 17:02

Nope, horrid name, despite it being a family name.

oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 17:02

@littlepattilou

I really like the name...In fact, I am looking for a name for an old rocking horse...''Wilfred'' [Being Victorian sounding] rather fits the bill!

Cheers!

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/01/2021 17:03

@FreakyZoey95. I've never heard it before, but if my DH wanted to use it after his Grandad I could live with it, provided he could live with Mac day to day. Not because I dislike it, but because I always shorten names (or avoid using other peoples if they prefer the long version).

What do you think of Mac or another shortening.

But if you don't like it, you can veto it, but do consider your DH's wishes.

Can you tell me why you think he'd be bullied though? I just can't see it. Not even where I live, which is not culturally diverse at all (so the names are all pretty much Harry, Catherine, George, Anastasia)

CleverCatty · 07/01/2021 17:04

@CarryOnFestiveNamechanging

I've got an unusual name and though I'd never change it - it does get very tedious explaining the name and it's origins (it's foreign, I'm not, well partly etc).

My other friends with 'normal' names never get this!

KillingEvenings · 07/01/2021 17:05

Voted YABU but only because potential bullying is not a reason to veto a name. Kids don't get bullied because of their names, its just not how bullies work. If they wanted to bully your son and his name was sam, they'd bully him.

Dozer · 07/01/2021 17:06

Given the stats of only 7 DC of that name since 1837, has your H even got the name correct?

YANBU to veto a name for any reason, as long as you’re open to a fair few name options and not just your no 1 choice!

RincewindsHat · 07/01/2021 17:06

@Biscusting

My DH wanted to call our DD Jugula Hmm
As in Dracula's crush? (sorrynotsorry)
formerbabe · 07/01/2021 17:08

It's fine but don't call your DC something you don't both like... obviously.

I actually thought it sounded middle Eastern when I first read it.

Depending on where you live, your DC wouldn't be bullied. We live in London, very few names raise an eyebrow here

Fairyflaps · 07/01/2021 17:10

This is what middle names are for. One of my DS has his great-grandfather's name as a middle name. We would never have considered it as a first name as it is usually used as a girl's name. But as a middle name it's fine. He's proud of it and where it comes from - and he's never been teased.

scentedgeranium · 07/01/2021 17:12

I actually don't dislike it, and I'm very weird name averse.
Middle name as a compromise?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 17:21

Maracas
That’s the only thing I can think of that he maybe teased with

Me too. I don't know if it is, but I'm guessing that Maracas must be slang for testicles in Spanish-speaking countries Grin

I think it's the second 'a' that makes it a bit odd. As PPs have said, Marek is perfectly normal (although still possibly a slightly strange choice if you have no Polish connection) and Merrick is obvious how it's pronounced (albeit usually a surname); but you'd constantly get 50/50 emphasis as both MARR-ack and mar-RACK.

Barack Obama was pretty much the most famous person in the world for eight years and people (as a whole) still never quite worked out where the emphasis should go in his name.

Sheleg · 07/01/2021 17:22

The whole "being teased for their name" thing is such a myth these days. Schools are full of all sorts of names - it's just not an issue.
