MSNBC Chris Hayes shows how bad it was and how bad it could have been.

user1471565182 · 09/01/2021 07:51

military members voted for Biden by quite a large majority and theres also massive respect for Matiss. Dont believe the trumpist crap about being loved by military people.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 09/01/2021 08:17

I think we may see a moonlight flit from the WH...

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/01/2021 08:19

I believe Trump may have lost quite a lot of his military supporters by reportedly (he denied it, I think) calling US war dead "losers" and "suckers", @user1471565182.

Roussette · 09/01/2021 08:21

Lweji Gosh, I've just watched that. Footage I haven't seen before that is absolutely horrifying. I'm amazed only one police officer died.
As every day goes by, to me, it is far more serious than it felt at the time when I was watching it live.

January 6th 2021 is going to go down in history for all the wrong reasons.

Igotjelly · 09/01/2021 08:24

Watching that video i'm surprised there weren't more crush deaths.

Igotjelly · 09/01/2021 08:26

Imagine we were sitting here following members of Congress being executed. Ir doesn't bare thinking about.

Not sure how I feel about him being removed from Twitter. Seems a slippery slope towards loss of free speech.

Where is that screenshot from DGR? It reads like projection. It would be more accurate if you were to swap all the GOP/Trump and Dem references.

Hardly.

No-one is entitled to a Twitter account.
He's broken their rules, such as they are.

Its indicative of another problem actually. The unregulated and unaccountability of social media.

You have to ask the question 'why now' its not because Trump has finally crossed some line. Its because Trump no longer can action powers of accountability on social media companies.

Its effectively a form of lobbying to curry favour with the incoming government. And to stop outside accountability.

People have been perma banned for far less. The idea that twitter enables free speech is bollocks. It can disenfranchise who it likes for the slightest reason. Twitter allows speech it doesn't object to or care about. It continues to allow content of violence and porn. It reflects the beliefs and values of its staff. Twitters power is its gate keeping without over sight.

There is no right to recourse for unfair bannings. There is no transparency in the appeals process. There is no legal or independent over sight of the entire system - its all closed and internal.

And twitter wants to keep it that way because that's where it gets its own power from. It can lobby and influence as it wants that way.

And going forward that set up will probably suit the democrats too. For political reasons. Not because twitter is some sort of leveller for the public to have their voice heard.

Trump served a purpose and brought people to the platform. That's profit. It also allowed them not to have to spend money on complying with regulation.

When you hear talk of 'free speech' on twitter be mindful of twitters own interests in this.

Im glad trump has gone because there was a major security risk with him but im also not cheering his banning at the 11th hour after so much damage has been done and the reality is that the biggest beneficiaries of the banning are twitter themselves and not for the public and the publics safety and security for which twitter continue not to want to be in any way accountable for in any meaningful way. And that precisely why they banned Trump. To absolve responsibility rather than to take responsibility.

Popped up in a feed, can't speak to provenance.

Interesting re Twitter

It’s very important to him

So incredible that we are in this place

FrankieStein402 · 09/01/2021 08:56

If those aides had not taken the ceremonial boxes with them biden would not have been certified in that session - depending on how long it took to get hold of the copies that would have opened up a host of opportunities for trumpian legal challenges to an alleged 'unconstitutional' certification.
I hope they get some recognition for preventing the coup. Uh

TheNorthWestPawsage · 09/01/2021 09:00

RedToothBrush is completely right. Twitter is looking out for itself - there are no uninterested parties in this.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences which is usually what people mean when they say "freedom of speech is under threat" in Western countries. People are shocked they can lose their job/privileges or have to face consequences for the horrible ist/phobic things they say.

What people fail to understand is outside of inciting violence you are absolutely free to say whatever you want, people are also free to react however they want to what you say by firing you, banning you, kicking you off their platform etc.

Roussette · 09/01/2021 09:07

Redtoothbrush Interesting post re Twitter.
People have been banned for far far less during Trump's reign. He was useful to them these last few years, he generated traffic. Now, at the last minute they ban him.
I never followed him but always saw his tweets and he was able to get away with far far more than others. Now he's outlived his use.

Interesting that it took 300 of it's own staff lobbying those in charge, to get Trump banned. They did this reluctantly.

RedToothBrush · 09/01/2021 09:09

That 14th amendment stuff is a pile of crap. Easy for the very expensive lawyers of twitter to demonstrate that actually they haven't treated trump equally. Theyve been more than fair and they've allowed him the benefit of the doubt and the privilege of office to not ban him previously when they have banned others for far less.

Beyond that the idea that trump will be able to prove any of the rest of that nonsense in court before the 20th January when the only person left willing to represent him, is as nuts as Guilliani himself.

Even if he tries it on at the last minute it will get thrown out of court as unconstitutional potentially actually leaving trump open to prosecution for breaking the constitution and his legal duty to transfer power smoothly.

Anyone thinking they've got a magic gotcha is loopy and not very aware of us law and how it works.

I was suspended from Twitter for 'hate speech ' for calling a male bodied person a man, so if I can be suspended for that, damn right Trump can be permanently banned for inviting an attack on Capitol Hill!
MarshaBradyo · 09/01/2021 09:09

Is this the most effective Trump has been to incite riots?

He’s made it worse before but this time he incited it.

MarshaBradyo · 09/01/2021 09:11

I don’t think it’s to do with usefulness to Twitter waning. But the severity of consequences

But I do agree it would have needed lots of pressure as some at top would have been reluctant

Excellent post from RedToothBrush.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 09/01/2021 09:23

And Trump does still have a platform (for the next few days).

Access to this, where he presumably can be as "un-scilenced" as he likes? Got a podium and everything...
