The man the far right attempted to pass as Antifa who stormed the US Capital is 32-year old Jake Angeli. A MAGA referred as “QAnon shaman”. Angeli was reportedly photographed with Rudy Giuliani. There is no evidence Antifa activists were present.

He is a well known trump supporter, a journalist posted an interview with him from months back but I can't find that now, will search for it later

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 07/01/2021 11:39

It's kind of the opposite though. BLM = protest. Demonstrate about an election being stolen = riot.

Do you really think that Trump won?

Roussette · 07/01/2021 11:42

Duncin Yes I saw it. He's not your normal Trump supporter in that he came across eloquently, even if he talked bollocks

And the other guys with a picture with Antifa web address were on Antifa’s website named as known White Supremacists.

And the enormous white supremacist tattoo?

DuncinToffee · 07/01/2021 11:49

Roussette yes that's the one

borntobequiet · 07/01/2021 11:49

I won't have voted for a specific elector.
You will have expressed a preference that a member of the Electoral College may or may not vote for in the College (depending on how your state voted and whether the elector keeps faith and follows through with that). Hence HC winning the popular vote but losing the election. See also: faithless electors

"After four years in office, we can now see that Trumpspeak was the window dressing that let Donald Trump and his clique nudge the entire apparatus of state ever further right; a smokescreen to confuse those who refused to see him as in any way credible. Deliberately or otherwise, it placed a grotesque facade at the forefront of American political life, with the upshot that Americans as a whole, and Democrats in particular, refused to take him seriously. In fact, so busy were we all ridiculing a man who can barely read, who is staggeringly ignorant, and seems not to know how to behave in public that we all dropped our guard. We should have mistrusted a language that has proved to be a grave threat for American democracy and for the wider Western world that has always looked to the United States for inspiration. We should have mistrusted Trumpspeak."

CaveMum · 07/01/2021 11:54

@contrmary it's a tongue in cheek reference to how police/law enforcement appear to be treating the two groups so differently.

Roussette · 07/01/2021 11:55

Sabrina part time actor, QAnon supporter, no idea about tattoos. Don't want to give him any more air.

I agree with what some are saying this morning. Whatever good Trump has done and there have been a few positive things... all that is destroyed because of yesterday and how he handled it. He could've left office on a more positive note but his paper thin ego and need to 'win' would not allow him.
The Trump name is going to be an embarrassment for the rest of time.

Is it too much to hope that he has forever damned his offspring's chances of, significant, political careers. Both Donald Jr and Ivanka have indicated that is the direction they intend to go in...

I'd like to think to think that Eric is too dumb to be able to even fill out an application form to consider it, but if there's one thing the last four or so years have taught us.....

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/01/2021 12:01

Don Jr and Ivanka are linked to this mayhem. So hopefully their behaviour will also be acted on and they will be barred from public office.

At some point it must have dawned on Hitler that he wasn't ever going to be remembered with flowers candles and incense. At which point he didn't care.

As usual, Oscar applies ...

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 07/01/2021 12:03

It’s going to take years to heal these rifts. I think he is a) having a massive mantrum, b) scared he is going to end up in jail, c) leaving a steaming pile of poo for Biden, and d) plotting his own army...

SabrinaThwaite · 07/01/2021 12:04

@Roussette Mentioned to balance out the idea that these were all just ordinary Joe’s peacefully protesting.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 07/01/2021 12:04

My knowledge of the US political system is entirely gleaned from the West Wing.

Where is Trump's Leo? Does he not have a team of sensible, clever people who can give wise counsel in the Oval Office?

Has he really just got yes men behind him who want to make money?

I'd quite like Bartlett in office for real now, thanks in fact, Sheen could probably do it

CaveMum · 07/01/2021 12:05

I'm sure they'd find a way of getting themselves elected in some Deep South Republican stronghold, much the same way MPs here get parachuted into "safe seats". However a move to any actual significant power from there is a very long road.

I do wish there was a bar on the Presidency to prevent people with no political experience from running. Our system is by no means perfect but at least you know that the person who is Leader of their party has some political experience!

Grrrpredictivetex · 07/01/2021 12:06

Whilst like most of you I'm appalled, saddened but not entirely shocked by last nights events. I truly hope PB and KH can pull this back, as The United States plays a huge role in the world.

On a lighter note.

Silvia Merler @SMerler

From @YouGov poll: among Republican voters, 45% approve of the storming of Capitol, 30% think the perpetrators are 'patriots', 52% think Biden is at least partly to blame for it, and 85% think it would be inappropriate to remove Trump from office after this. This is not a fringe

Mittens030869 · 07/01/2021 12:08

We can only hope that Trump’s last tweet promising an orderly transfer of power will mean that his supporters give up their protests. (Although he still repeated his allegations of election fraud.)

Same here! I've been listening to the West Wing Podcasts and have recently reached the point at which Trump got elected (while the podcast was covering Season 3) and they often draw attention to the gulf between that political ideal and what they have! It's known as the "Trump! Ai, ai ai!"

I think the number of resignations from the White House staff (FLOTUS CoS and Deputy Press Secretary are the most senior that I'm aware of so far) in the last 12 hours is an indicator that even they have a line that should not be crossed. I expect there will be more resignations to come.

lionheart · 07/01/2021 12:12

Thank you Roussette for the new thread.

The chaps with the beige dungarees are part of some extreme right wing 'militia' or other. Obviously there are sartorial questions to be asked of them.

Wherrsmaclickypen · 07/01/2021 12:13

Amidst all the madness, some of which was predictable and largely preventable I simply cant get over the white, stupid entitlement of little wailing maced Elizabeth from Knoxville. She simply had no fear of authority or of being shot, did she, with cultish belief in her moral superiority and 'rightness', How this would have played out so differently if the protestors were black or muslim doesnt bear thinking about. A glimpse of how it must be for so many American citizens. Very sad.
