I actually thought this was parody. But this guy actually wrote this shit. On New Year's Eve. I wonder whether it was after a discussion with Boris?

Mr Baines has since apologised and stood down as chairman of the Clwyd South Conservative Association. He wrote: ‘A&Es in Germany aren’t full of fat mums in pot noodle-stained leggings/ pjs taking their kids for a day out at A&E to harvest Facebook likes because their darling little snot-covered Asbo fell over. Happy New Year.’

I somehow get the feeling that he's a Mumsnetter? Hmm

Ha! Are some people really like that?

Hatstrategicallydipped · 05/01/2021 19:39

@formerbabe

Last time I went to a&e, I looked like shit. I was in the middle of deep cleaning the house! Perhaps I should have left my child bleeding whilst I dressed up a bit
You could have been German and civilised about it. The housework would have been done before you brought him to A&E? Jeez - you just can't drag some people out of the gutter, much as you try. Sad really.

I am scum

Covine · 05/01/2021 19:41

I always put on my sequins, full make up and curl my hair before rushing my kids off for emergency medical treatment.

How else would I get a decent selfie?! The lighting in those places is very unforgiving.

SweetPetrichor · 05/01/2021 19:42

To be fair, he is pretty accurately summing up a sector of Britain’s people. And they are always the loudest and most irritating. (And they don’t wear masks, of course.)

yetanothernamitynamechange · 05/01/2021 19:43

He forgot to mention that the kids will all have been born to different absent fathers. (But it is different when the Prime Minister has kids to multiple mothers. That makes him a manly man and a jolly good fellow). Also I would never normally insult someones appearance but he looks a tiny bit chubby himself (not obese but probably overweight). Is it OK to be fat if the fat comes from expensive food and you wear a suit instead of leggings?

As you should!!! Who wants to post selfies on FB from such an opportune time as being at A&E(!!) when you're not looking your best?

I usually just post a pic of the waiting area. Leave them hanging. For the likes. You get more likes when you don't release all the details first off.

I love a beef & tomato flavoured pot noodle. That and a trip to a & e is the highlight of my year. Beats staying home anytime.

Covine · 05/01/2021 19:46

I do not wish to see Mr Baines in leggings, pot noodle stained or otherwise.

I like to tempt curiosity when someone bites and asks me what's happened by saying 'I'll pm you hun'

yetanothernamitynamechange · 05/01/2021 19:47

Additionally I have spent some time in AandE departments on the continent and I can't say the people there looked much smarter. People dont tend to look their best when they have rushed to the hospital with a poorly child (or are ill themselves). Also how many times has he gone to hospital in Germany to be able to draw these comparisons? What the fuck is he doing? (My excuse is that I am extremely accident prone but even I havent visited European A&Es enough times to draw firm conclusions)

Hardbackwriter · 05/01/2021 19:48

@Lweji

YABU just for this "I somehow get the feeling that he's a Mumsnetter?"

He was also being unreasonable, though.

On a side note, one time I took DS to A&E he was running around as if nothing was wrong with him in the waiting room. The nurse gave me that look when he entered the triage room. He ended up staying the night on oxygen and steroids, because he had low blood O2 due to bronchiolitis.
Children are quite good as seeming as if nothing is wrong with them at first sight, until they crash.

DS recently had to go to A&E in the middle of the night because he was really struggling to breathe with croup - it was horrible and quite scary. They gave him steroids and they worked basically immediately but they wanted him kept there for two hours for observations - he was running around, playing with all the toys, chatting away. Everyone else was giving me absolute evils - by this point it was 4am and he was having the time of his life - and I wanted to stand up and make an announcement 'I know it looks like I have brought a perfectly well toddler to A&E but an hour ago his lips had turned blue, I promise!'
unmarkedbythat · 05/01/2021 19:50

I actually like it when their mask slips, makes it harder for them to pretend they aren't the nasty party any more.

Covine · 05/01/2021 19:51

... something something bratwurst ... Tory specialists blah blah something ...

Staffy1 · 05/01/2021 19:52

How does he know unless he lives in A&E? Probably there quite often choking on the all the bile.

Can you imagine him in a hospital gown with his arse out? Haha.

Going to confess...

I had to go to hospital (not A&E) last month for a non-Covid related appointment and blood test. I actually really enjoyed my hospital "outing" Blush. The hospital cafe was open so I had a hot cup of tea, everyone was really friendly and I had a lovely chat with both the nurse and the person taking blood. It was lovely to see some new faces for a change! I came away feeling quite refreshed and happier about life. Bizarre that...

DressingGownofDoom · 05/01/2021 19:53

Doesn't look like he's a stranger to a pot noodle himself.

It’s almost like a parody of an offensive “angry right wing” Tweet. He’s either spectacularly unoriginal or he was quitting his post anyway and thought he’d try to grab his 5 minutes of fame on the way out.

Funny that some people will deny social class is still a big deal in the U.K. though. This kind of sneering at the “lower orders” - based on the way they dress, their diet, their vocabulary, etc is largely unheard of in most other European countries.

PyongyangKipperbang · 05/01/2021 19:58

I remember going to A&E with DS2 (now 15) when he was 5 weeks old and struggling to breathe. Ended up in there for days with him in an oxygen tent.

He was taken straight in, and there was a hell of a fuss as a family of at least 8 people were kicking off because little Asbo was still waiting to be seen after 3 hours because he had felt sick earlier and it might have been meningitis. They ended up going home before he was seen.

It happens a lot at our local hospital I am told (DD1 works there and did a lot of her training in A&E and says it is a massive issue). There does seem to be a type of family who view a trip to A&E as a reasonable alternative to a day at the zoo........

Lweji · 05/01/2021 19:59

Probably his childhood memories. Wink

NO

SapphosRock · 05/01/2021 20:00

Am I the only one not offended by this? Made me laugh.

Not very wise for a politician to say it but that makes it funnier because it's always nice to see a Tory apologise. Doesn't happen often enough.
