To really want Richard Ayoade to be the 14th Doctor (Who)?

Rumours are that Jodie Whittaker is stepping down.

I haven't watched since David Tennant left but Richard Ayoade as the next Doctor would certainly have me tuning in again, AIBU?

I don't know about dr who but I would happily date Richard Ayoade, I think he's so cute

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 11:03

Munya Chawawa. I had to google him. I've not seen him but he doesn't look like "my" doctor.

That got me thinking that they are never going to please everyone as "their" doctors are all different.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 05/01/2021 11:19

He'd be better off holding on for a turn at C-3PO.

He's already been an android in The Mandalorian, though, so that's probably unlikely.

TrickorTreacle · 05/01/2021 11:28

Unless I'm missing something, I thought that Doctor Who can only regenerate up to the 13th Doctor? So it ends there?

TodgerStrunk · 05/01/2021 11:38

I think Chris Chibnall has been a bit crap, I have no idea whether Jodie Whittaker would fare better with a better show runner but I do know, that unlike every Doctor Who since Tom Baker, I'm not even on this spectrum -

Again with the image.

PurplePlain · 05/01/2021 11:52

The Doctor is supposed to be (of his/her own choice) looking after humanity. We could do with someone who seems in control as well as a bit disorganised. And the stories don't have to involve running. Jo Martin or Paterson Joseph would be a great choice. Much as I enjoy Richard Ayoade's sense of humour I'm not sure if he can portray the right kind of emotional warmth?

TitsInAbsentia · 05/01/2021 11:53

I am still reeling from the new assistant announcement 🙄 what's the obsession with older male non-actors (yes I know he was in skins bit that's hardly akin to holding such a key role in a drama)?

I would love Michael Sheen, have seen him in so many things lately and he delivers in every role, whether he would join something that really is a sinking ship (not JW fault - crap writing, plethora of crap assistants etc) is another thing.

RA would have me switching off, NF I would give a chance along with some of the other suggestions on here.

MasterBeth · 05/01/2021 11:53

Jodie Whittaker has been good, but the writing is just not up to the standards established in the new series.

No, they explained that back in a previous episode... one of the ones that had several incarnations in it... the time lords gave him more basically.
Lovely1a2b3c · 05/01/2021 11:55

YANBU.

Ayoade would make a great Dr Who. I went off it a bit with the last two doctors.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/01/2021 11:55

@SimonJT

No matter who the doctor is can they please get Russell T Davies back so we have some good quality story lines.
This is the crux of the matter, yes.

Ariyon Bakare? So beautiful, but will forever be a gorgeous villain to me after His Dark Materials. He'd make a beyond perfect Master.

Mackenzie Crook would be breathtaking! Glorious. Amazing.

But then so would Toby Jones ... 😍

David Ajala? True, he'd be at home in the time travel world (Star Trek Discovery has been a good deed in a rotten world, lately). Can he actually act? ST didn't seem to require much beyond stolidity.

I guess if it were ever going to be Ben Whishaw we'd know by now. I probably haven't done enough good things in my life to deserve such riches ...

Good lord - I had to google this. Saw the name, thought "oh no!" Then saw the picture underneath and changed my mind.

TBH, it's only recently they moved away from the single young female stereotype for the companion.

CaffiSaliMali · 05/01/2021 11:57

I would love Colin Morgan as the Dr.

More than anything I want Russell T Davies back. Some of Moffat's episodes are my favourites but the scripts got a bit too clever and complex for me at some points (perhaps I'm just a bit dense Grin). However it feels they have gone a bit too far in the other direction now.

I like JW, she's made the best of what she's been given to work with.

Lovely1a2b3c · 05/01/2021 11:58

Alternatively Stephen Merchant?

SimonJT · 05/01/2021 12:03

@SuperLoudPoppingAction

I would love Russell t Davies to come back as producer or at least writer now he's launching It's a Sin. Surely he would have the time. I would accept 8 episodes a year if they were good.
Its out 22nd isn’t it, first ep preview looked good a few weeks ago.
UserMcNewName · 05/01/2021 13:28

I think they need to prioritise sorting the writing out. It's dropped off a cliff quality wise in recent years meaning neither Whittaker nor Capaldi had chance to really prove themselves for any decent length of time. A good actor can only do so much with a terrible script.

The most memorable episodes since the reboot began have all been well written as well as well acted.

The doctor was granted a new generation cycle as the 11th (they had run out by that point because 10 regenerated into himself and they added the 'war' doctor when Ecclestone wouldn't return for the 50th anniversary).

However, recent plotlines might have thrown the entire regeneration limit out of the window anyway.
@user1471565182 there’s nothing wrong with disliking an actor, it doesn’t make us man babies. I was excited by the prospect of a female doctor, I’ve watched the show since I was 14 and felt that Capaldi was a bit crap. Feel Whitaker is crap too. Nothing wrong with that Confused
I agree with this.

Christopher Eccleston was great, although I would have liked a couple more series with him in it, also loved DT and MS. Didn't warm to PC at all and it's been downhill since then. There were too many companions in the JW episodes and the writing has been poor. There have been no iconic episodes, like Blink and Silence in the Library.

I never thought I would say this, but I'm losing interest in Dr Who, but a decent script writer and some decent characters would draw me back.

TodgerStrunk · 05/01/2021 14:11

DH is salivating over the idea of Michael Sheen as the Master.

I would be thankful for anyone apart from Kris Marshall. But would consider Maxine Peake or Colin Morgan. Or indeed the Bridgerton Duke - I imagine the ratings would shoot up.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 05/01/2021 14:15

Or indeed the Bridgerton Duke

Isn't he more likely to be on the James Bond casting list? Really far too smoothly pretty for a Doctor!

We've had a Scottish doctor and any number of English ones. We are due a Welshman!
CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2021 14:43

Welsh person rather. Didn't mean to be sexist.

MasterBeth · 05/01/2021 14:45

@twistedsistersocks

Richard Osman would also be good.
Yeah, sure, why pick an actor at all? Wayne Rooney would be good. Adele? Fiona Bruce?
Holothane · 05/01/2021 14:49

The writing has to improve a lot,
