To really want Richard Ayoade to be the 14th Doctor (Who)?

Rumours are that Jodie Whittaker is stepping down.

I haven't watched since David Tennant left but Richard Ayoade as the next Doctor would certainly have me tuning in again, AIBU?

I'm hoping for Michael Sheen, although Richard Ayoade is also on my list, along with Mackenzie Crook, Joseph Gilgun, Jo Martin and Maxine Peake.

I'd forgotten about Patterson Joseph, he's back on my list again now, and I agree about his portrayal of the Marquis of Carabas. He could step into it and be a slightly edgy Doctor.

I used to thing Eddie Izzard would be a good Doctor, but I don't think he could stop being Eddie Izzard now. Similarly, I fear that Noel Fielding would just play Noel Fielding.

For years, I longed for Judi Dench to take the role...

Yes!

Giggorata · 05/01/2021 08:54

Think, not thing.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 08:56

I had to google his name but I think Ariyon Bakare would be good.

DecemberSun · 05/01/2021 08:57

Oooh. I meant yes he'd be great not yes YABU.

Norwester · 05/01/2021 08:59

Love RA, but not as Dr Who.

Emilia Clarke.

Grumpycatsmum · 05/01/2021 09:02

Yes, yes! Thanks for making me smile this morning!!

twistedsistersocks · 05/01/2021 09:03

@SoupDragon 🤣

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 05/01/2021 09:05

I would love Russell t Davies to come back as producer or at least writer now he's launching It's a Sin.
Surely he would have the time.
I would accept 8 episodes a year if they were good.

SimonJT · 05/01/2021 09:09

No matter who the doctor is can they please get Russell T Davies back so we have some good quality story lines.

whaa · 05/01/2021 09:14

RA please! My dd suggested. And I LOVED Matt ( smith?) my memory has gone this a.m.
it needs...the master to be that blonde guy that was sooo evil
A lot more of Missy
More of Matt Lucas
More of the chap that was the flatmate ( that’s now big in the us) oh my memory!
More of individual, characterful eccentrics.
Clever scripts - less of the ridiculous heart string rubbish and more dinosaurs in a spaceship.
Less ticking of the right on boxes, and more ticking of the, this is a fantastic opportunity to write some really confident, funny, scary scripts.
A woman dr is fine, but can she PLEASE have some oomph about her? And not wear some wierd 70s kids tv presenter outfit. She looks like she’s on playaway.
And not have a surrogate family. What was all that about?
She’s an ALIEN ffs
Missy would make a great doctor.
So would I!
Tiddlytiddly tiddly, wooo woo woooooo!

catmandont · 05/01/2021 09:16

RA would be good, or Michael Sheen, or Matt Berry

SirVixofVixHall · 05/01/2021 09:18

It has been appalling since JW took over, it isn’t just her, it is the writing, it is terrible. My dd’s mock the script style, it is that bad.

I love Richard Ayoade, but they need to get some decent writers in. Also agree Noel Fielding.

Newgirls · 05/01/2021 09:24

I’d like Jodie to stay and have some decent writers

RA would be fun which would be good

louderthan1 · 05/01/2021 09:27

Paterson Joseph would be great. Also Shaun Parkes, a criminally underrated actor.
But my dream for the Doctor for years has been Adrian Lester. Just the right mix of Puckish weirdness and twinkly charm.

IfeellikeaJoan · 05/01/2021 09:28

I haven't watched it since Matt Smith, but I think Colin Morgan would be a good Doctor.

Yes also to Philip Glenister!

ShinyPie · 05/01/2021 09:56

@SoupDragon

Jo Martin who played Ruth Clayton, the "other" doctor, was really good I thought.
I thought she should have been the 'main' Doctor!

The series is unlikely to improve until they replace the writing staff. I understand they were trying to get away from the 'high concept' Sci-Fi of Moffat (arguably, he wrote some of the best episodes during the Tennant era, such as Blink and Girl in the Fireplace), but the new format feels far too childish and preachy. And I know DW is considered a Children's show, but I think Russell T Davies was able to appeal to a wider demographic.

RA is fab, but I don't think a comedic actor is the right fit for the Doctor. Although I quite the idea if Diane Morgan as the Doctor, doing an impression of Philomena Cunk 'what is time?' Grin

CounsellorTroi · 05/01/2021 10:01

I think David Ajala would be fantastic. He is no stranger to sci fi having been in the latest series of Star Trek Discovery.

Pukkatea · 05/01/2021 10:22

No no no. I love him and think he could do the wacky alien thing, but imagining him trying to be commanding, or angry, or emotional, I just can't see it. Could RA pull off Matt Smith's speech in Rings of Akhaten, or Tom Baker's 'do I have the right?' or when David Tennant said goodbye to Rose...nope nope nope.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/01/2021 10:24

Someone on Twitter suggested Fiona Shaw, I think she’d be brilliant, she completely carried the last series of Killing Eve. I’d really like Ben Willbond or Laurence Rickard (from Ghosts) or actually any of the Ghosts, but mainly Ben so I can just melt in front of the TV every week. Chuck out Chibnall and get the guys behind Inside Number 9 on the writing team. Let’s get this thing incredibly dark and clever and sexy.

Giggorata · 05/01/2021 10:27

Great idea to have the Number 9 crew to write it. Come to think of it, Steve Pemberton wouldn’t be a bad Doctor, either.

I like the idea of Fiona Shaw, too.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 05/01/2021 10:29

Oh yes. I might start watching again. I love Richard, though all is see is Moss whenever he is on screen. 😆

Pukkatea · 05/01/2021 10:31

Paterson Joseph really is the perfect choice, a serious actor with comedy credentials. Peter Capaldi was tipped for years before it happened so let's continue putting that energy out into the universe.

Codywolf · 05/01/2021 10:54

I think Kris Marshal would be a fantastic doctor

bellinisurge · 05/01/2021 10:58

Munya Chawawa - I know he's more a comedian but his fantastic eccentricity in his lockdown skits and sketches online have been awesome.
