To really want Richard Ayoade to be the 14th Doctor (Who)?

Rumours are that Jodie Whittaker is stepping down.

I haven't watched since David Tennant left but Richard Ayoade as the next Doctor would certainly have me tuning in again, AIBU?

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles It's never been the same since William Hartnell left... I was a small child, and my heart almost broke. If I could have got my hands on that recorder I would've shoved it up Patrick Troughton's fundamental orifice. I couldn't watch it for years. I can still remember the horror of the transformation.

Mally2020 · 05/01/2021 05:33

I am a huge (female) dr who fan and jodie was not right for the role. I would love david tennant to come back in a bizarre regeneration series with billie and katherine etc. To culminate in a new doctor after a super evolution which results in a quirky new doctor like suggestions above such as richard or noel.

The BBC are ruining their shows at the moment. Whoever the actors are, it's the writing and policies that are at fault. They want to lecture not entertain at the moment. Hopefully a phase. We need escapism, we get wokeism instead.

What about Joanna Lumley - too old but could be eccentric in the Tom Baker mode. Tennant and T Baker were the best. It was their energies plus good stories.

CodenameVillanelle · 05/01/2021 06:04

I watched the first few episodes with Jodie Whittaker and was disappointed and didn't watch more. Too many companions, too many inserting selves into historical events, just not engaging. I don't think it was whittacker's fault but bad writing.
I have just been watching the IT crowd so imagining the dr as Moss which is a bit disconcerting Grin I haven't seen him act straight though and I have no doubt he's capable. He's got the right slightly mad eccentric energy. Paterson Joseph would be good. Idris Elba is too famous now!

100% agree.

You can spot the shoehorning and virtue signalling from a mile away.

Redwinestillfine · 05/01/2021 06:39

He would be awesome but I agree. We need new scripts desperately

LakieLady · 05/01/2021 06:40

Now that Anthony Marshall has left Casualty, it crossed my mind that he might make a good Dr Who.

Aidan Turner is my prediction for the next James Bond and while I'd happily watch him in almost anything, especially if he gets to take his shirt off, I can't see him as Dr Who.

colonelchicken · 05/01/2021 06:43

Patterson Joseph has my vote too

nebbish11 · 05/01/2021 07:02

He would be good at being eccentric I think.

I am beginning to wonder if it has run its course as a programme for a regular series though- is it 10 years since it returned? Could it be something for a Special once a year (say at Christmas time?) in future?

DarceyDashwood · 05/01/2021 07:12

People have been mentioning Paterson Joseph for years - I’d love him to get the chance to show what he could do. RA would be a fab choice too though - he’s brilliant!

IMO the last really really great series was the Catherine Tate one. That’s what I’d like them to get back to. Exciting stand-alone adventures. Less of the tragedy and angst. Fun Saturday teatime telly!

Dashel · 05/01/2021 07:52

It has become too silly, I much prefer it a little darker, someone less cutesy and more gruff, more Richard Armitage or Idris Elba. I would quite like another female dr but maybe someone like Thandie Newton.

KizzyWayfarer · 05/01/2021 07:52

I would like Jo Martin, who had a brief appearance as the Doctor last series from some unspecified point in the timeline. She had a command and sparkle that really showed up the flaws in JW’s Doctor - too nice, too much self-doubt. Almost certainly mainly the writers’ fault though. And the companion needs a bit of spark too and definitely no romantic yearning after the Doctor. We’ve been rewatching Tennant & Donna, and now onto Matt Smith and Amy, both fab pairings.

MawkishHawk · 05/01/2021 08:12

Paterson Joseph gets mentioned every single time they’re searching for a new doctor....he must have been offered it and turned it down at some point by now!

I think Jodie has made the absolute best of bad writing and bad stories - I place the blame for her character falling flat squarely at Chibnall’s door.

MawkishHawk · 05/01/2021 08:15

How about Naomie Harris?

longwayoff · 05/01/2021 08:22

Noel Fielding has fans? Oh. But is he an actor? I thought he just did presenting and an odd bit of comedy. Why not Tom Allen? He's everywhere already so I expect he could be squeezed into a Tardis.

colonelchicken · 05/01/2021 08:24

Patterson Joseph would be appropriate because of the character he played in the tv adaptation of Neverwhere. If you've seen him in that it's an obvious choice

LindaEllen · 05/01/2021 08:26

@SoupDragon

I'm not sure... I've never seen him do serious.
To be fair, The Doctor has been played at least semi comedic since DT. Matt Smith particularly. So he wouldn't need to be completely serious.
SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 08:37

But I've never seen him serious at all and I don't think that would work.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 08:39

Jo Martin who played Ruth Clayton, the "other" doctor, was really good I thought.

Snarfclamper · 05/01/2021 08:44

Exactly. (I'm not a fan, but live with people who are.). I think one of the reasons J W's tenure has not been a success is (a) the script and (b) the fact that she plays it in a humourless/overly earnest way. I'm not saying she is a poor actress because she's been v good in other things, but I think she was mis-cast as Dr Who.

Zofloratheexplora · 05/01/2021 08:46

Paterson Joseph could just revive his Marquis de Carabas role from Neverwhere and be Dr Who without even trying. Excellent call

I came to say this. He would be great. Naomie Harris would be interesting too.

twistedsistersocks · 05/01/2021 08:49

Richard Osman would also be good.

Melange99 · 05/01/2021 08:51

What about Phillip Glenister?

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 08:51

I think one of the reasons J W's tenure has not been a success is (a) the script and (b) the fact that she plays it in a humourless/overly earnest way

She has no gravitas at all in the role. That's why I can't see someone who I've only seen in comedy as The Doctor.

SoupDragon · 05/01/2021 08:52

@twistedsistersocks

Richard Osman would also be good.
Good job the Tardis is bigger on the inside...
