to want to share the truth about Insta-bragger colleague

Shr1881 · 04/01/2021 03:11

I have a very recently rejoined Instagram after a break. Starting to regret it now 🤦🏻‍♀️. I chose the option to add contacts from my Facebook and so this meant that I have followed the Instagram of a colleague, amongst others.

Aforementioned colleague has recently moved into a new house. It’s all she has talked about recently in the office, fair enough it’s an exciting time but even so. She’s told us about the fact that her and her DH have only been able to buy this place because it is shared ownership. They’ve bought a 25% share and then pay a massively inflated rent to a housing association on the rest of it. As time goes on, they are able to eventually buy more shares if they wish. It’s a big new build - there is only her and the DH- and she has openly said that there is no way they will be able to afford it otherwise. A couple of us in the office had tried to convince her to perhaps look at a slightly smaller house that they would have been able to get a mortgage on the normal way but she had her heart set on the big new build. She referred to it as “Insta-worthy”, which made me and other colleagues eye roll! I even told her about a couple of people I’ve known in years gone by who have had lots of issues with shared ownership properties... I have a friend who lives in one and has to ask for permission from the housing association every time she does any work to it, I also know somebody else who ran into a load of financial difficulties when they wanted to sell their share. But she was adamant this is what she wanted.

I was having a browse of her Instagram earlier this evening. Many of you here may know that there is a big ‘New Home’ community on Instagram and she seems to have thrown herself into that. The issue I have is the blatant lying! She has been inundated With comments on how beautiful the house is, and have had people saying things like “you are so lucky, how on earth have you afforded this, I could ever dream of a house like this” etc etc and she has replied telling people all about how hard she and her DH have worked over the years and it took them a long long time to save up, and telling people about how DH has recently had a career change to a high-paying job which allowed them to buy the house - absolute lies - her DH is in and out of work as he can’t hold a job down!! Does warehouse work now and again.. She has quite openly told us all of this. (There is a group of us who have worked together for a long time so we all know each other well on a personal level). They got the 25% mortgage based on her salary alone.

Then she’s been doing all the humble-bragging of hashtag hardworkpaysoff, I haven’t got enough stuff to fill these huuuuge fitted wardrobes.. it’s really quite cringey!

She has even told us girls in the office that If anybody asks where she lives then she lies and tells them something else because it would give away the fact that they are in a shared ownership property if anyone knew the location!?

I feel so spiteful but the bragging and fibbing is just terrible on her Instagram, I have to work with this woman four days a week and she never stops talking about house stuff, should I just drop a cheeky comment on her Instagram, filling people in on the truth, or should I just stop looking at her page? 😂 honestly wind me up so much when people fabricate a completely different life online to what they actually live.

OP posts:

Unfollow. She doesn't necessarily own much less of that house than someone with a massive mortgage would. It's still an achievement and she's still allowed to be proud of herself.

BlueThistles · 05/01/2021 16:26

I hope you've blocked her OP.. being unable to see her lies will be for the best .. Flowers

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 05/01/2021 17:55

The old chestnut, again. Biter and envious...yaddayadda

So what is then?

It’s certainly not concern.

It’s certainly not apathy.

So what? Why do you care if someone is paying over the odds to show something off on Instagram? Weird

katy1213 · 05/01/2021 18:00

So what is missing in your own life that you're so over-invested in hers?

CuppaZa · 05/01/2021 18:11

OP, intsagram is choka with fake lives. If you don’t like it get off of it. You sound spiteful, horrible and bitchy about colleague. It really shouldn’t bother you this much

Bettysnow · 05/01/2021 18:44

I feel quite sorry for her. Sounds as if her reality isn't a barrel of laughs. I certainly don't think it would be good idea to humiliate and embarrass this woman

Thewinterofdiscontent · 05/01/2021 19:51

How on earth can you write that the Op sounds horrible, spiteful and bitchy without being that yourself? The casual name calling is atrocious

If you can complain about the Op, why can the Op not complain about someone who lied, boasts and show offs? Such hypocrisy

netflixandmixedgrill · 05/01/2021 19:58

Careful OP

By your post last week you might end up next door to the horrendous shared ownership scumbags

"As per subject line really.

DH and I have been having a look at whether a new build is an option for us when we sell up and move hopefully next year (or this year, depending on when you are reading this!😁). A fair few plots on the online site plans are marked as “affordable housing”... what is this? Social? Shared ownership? Or something else?"

look like OP's actually funding it by selling her current property .. not sure how that in any way resembles the co-workers situ on instagram Confused
netflixandmixedgrill · 05/01/2021 20:13

@BlueThistles

She has made awful comments about people in shared ownership properties, and as most people know most new housing estates have a complete mix of private sold, rented, social housing and shared ownership.

OPs private sold property, may be identical to her colleagues shared ownership one.

But of course OP would be 75% better because she owns it all.

It's utter snobbery

sandandso · 05/01/2021 20:24

Amazed at the responses here. I agree no good will come from "exposing" her, but of course you're right to be annoyed at brazen lying. And it doesn't "harm nobody" - it feeds into the toxic social media culture which makes others feel needlessly inadequate for not being able to do what she has supposedly done, same as a "no make up selfie" that contains plenty of make up and Photoshop. And as for "she needs this" - nobody needs to portray a false, self-aggrandising image of themselves and it's not good for them to do so. Is it really too much to expect that we don't tell brazen lies to the world? Why doesn't she just show off her house pics without inventing stories about how she afforded it? I would not want to be friends with the Instagram colleague anymore and I don't blame you for feeling the way you do. Who knows what else she will lie about?

Thewinterofdiscontent · 05/01/2021 20:34

@netflixandmixedgrill

she has made awful comments about people in shared ownership properties

Only in your imagination .

The only comment Op makes about shared ownership is that it is an expensive and troublesome way to buy. Which it is.
The point the Op was raising was that boasting about having a show perfect house was stupid.. Like having a fancy car but paying masses of credit for it or a holiday you’ll be paying off for10 years ( guilty of that one).
They could have had a cheaper non show off house that was affordable. That’s sensible advice and not being snobby or awful or anything else.

Drogonssmile · 05/01/2021 20:36

Tbh I'd say "oh I saw your pic on IG and your house is AMAZING" See what she says knowing you know the ins and outs. Might clue her up that not all her followers are ignorant of the truth.

PegasusReturns · 05/01/2021 21:01

How is how her house looks affected by whether she owns it or not? People are allowed dot rent/share ownership and still have amazing houses you know Hmm

netflixandmixedgrill · 05/01/2021 21:07

@Thewinterofdiscontent

I'm not defending her colleagues financial choices.
The fact OP is so invested in "outing" a so called friend is nasty? What exactly is she outing her for? Yes her colleagues is being brash and is showing off but just unfollow her?
Like I said, many people on new builds could live next door to people who rent or share ownership and they would never even know.

It means nothing

DaisyDreaming · 05/01/2021 21:08

I wouldn’t say anything I would just feel pity for her for being so pathetic. I thought you post was going to say shes claiming a MLm paid for it!

she actually hasn't done that .... she's even considering one herself... I don't see OP being snobby at all anywhere on the thread... 😳

MrsHemsworthinmydreams · 06/01/2021 00:47

I honestly know a few people like this!! It’s infuriating!

MotherofPoodles · 06/01/2021 10:54

You sound jealous and spiteful. Which we all do from time to time, it's just you put yours on display.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 06/01/2021 11:03

One simple social media rule: if you don't like it, don't look.

Honestly, the mute button is my best friend forever on Instagram.

PinkSpring · 06/01/2021 11:06

This is why I don't use social media at all, it's full of lies and fake lives!

BlueThistles · 07/01/2021 00:18

this is so unfair.. and I don't believe OP is any of those things...
SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 07/01/2021 00:41

I’m with you thistles

I think someone living beyond their means and blawing a heap of hot air is pitiful and to say it is doing no harm? It is to her. And the others feeling that ‘she has done it so I can too’

Imagine having to keep up appearances and lying all the time. How exhausting. Yes we all tell little porks. I don’t portray my life as something it isn’t.

The only thing OP has erred on is wondering about calling her on it.

She hasn’t been sniffy or jealous or snobby about anything.

Getting a deposit for her house - shared ownership or not - is good enough to celebrate. Having to tap your colleagues for money to keep up appearances is not. That is deeply sad.

Yes she could unfollow. Yes insta is probably full of liars spouting pish about their supposedly perfect lives.

But since when is speaking pish and pretending to be something you aren’t something to be celebrated?
