DM lives alone and has bubbled with my household. She came over yesterday for a cup of tea, all completely normal. She text me today to say she’s been for a COVID test as she’s had a sore throat for 3 days. I am absolutely fuming with her for putting my family at risk and for being so sneaky and not even mentioning it yesterday. How do I get past her behaviour ☹️

OP posts:

I can't believe there are still posters popping up to say that a sore throat isn't a symptom of Covid. Even when other posters tell us that the only symptom they had initially was a sore throat and yet they tested positive.

Are you really so obtuse? Hmm

MimiDaisy11 · 05/01/2021 20:23

Well done OP for sticking around and challenging the ridiculous responses. Most OPers would have given up earlier to responding to such mean and ignorant comments.

Also if anyone still thinks a sore throat isn't a symptom here's the link to the WHO list of symptoms: www.who.int/health-topics/coronavirus#tab=tab_3

@Mittens030869 you can disbelieve it all you like but try getting a Covid test with that symptom alone and you can’t! As I said, that was my daughter about a month ago and I rang the dedicated Covid test line and she was absolutely refused to be tested. I tried saying I thought it was a symptom and they totally refused to budge. I refused to lie to get a test (husband has regular Covid tests so I think they were actually right).

There's a difference between a sore throat not entitling you to a test, and posters saying that a sore throat isn't a symptom of covid (it is). I suspect the government tried to come up with a list of the 3 commonest symptoms to make things simple, and to avoid the system being swamped by people who have symptoms which might also match the common cold.

Unfortunately as a result, many people aren't tested who have, and pass on, covid.

Mittens030869 · 05/01/2021 23:50

But when I booked a test online, I didn't have to specify which of the symptoms I had. I just had to indicate that I had Covid symptoms. The online test doesn't ask you to specify which of the symptoms you have.

But that isn't what I find hard to believe. I was meaning that we've had so many posters saying that the only symptom they had at first was a sore throat when they tested positive. And yet we still had some people saying that a sore throat couldn't be Covid, so why did the OP get upset about her mum coming round?

Mittens030869 · 05/01/2021 23:53

@WanderingHopefully Precisely. It's no wonder that the virus is spreading so quickly. The government really need to update the list of symptoms required for a Covid test.

cloudchaos · 06/01/2021 00:20

Could she be using the C-19 Zoe app to report how she feels each day? You can enter various symptoms as it asks how you're feeling very generally and even encourages you to log when you're feeling well.

I've been asked to get a test when I've said I felt fine other than a sore throat, and the NHS provide a test if the Zoe app asks you to have one, so perhaps this is why she got a test?

Janonomouse · 06/01/2021 00:48

A sore throat is absolutely a symptom. Where I am (Canada) you're advised to get a covid test if you have a sore throat that lasts for more than 24 hours.

If you're not testing for it in the UK, it's probably because covid rates are so high that you have to prioritize the most common symptoms only.

Janonomouse · 06/01/2021 00:51

And no wonder the UK is so riddled with Covid when it seems a good chunk of the population has little to no idea of the possible symptoms.

Flamingo30 · 06/01/2021 01:00

I agree that this is why it keeps spreading! I thought it was well known now that a sore throat is a common first symptom. Lots of people are testing positive without one of the three main symptoms. People need to be cautious and I would be angry too in this situation.

inquietant · 06/01/2021 07:05

The UK testing system has completely failed.

If you recall, Johnson said test and trace would be our route out of the covid situation Angry.

It is really upsetting to think £12bn was given to private companies who then did..... very little.

Covid is rife and the government holds a large share of culpability.

WanderingHopefully · 06/01/2021 09:28

To be fair to the test and trace system, it worked perfectly when we all had covid. We were all contacted immediately one of us tested positive and told to isolate, and then phoned regularly on the land line, and phoned, texted and emailed on our mobile numbers. We had it in two separate groups and this was the case for both sets.

Obviously it is just the experience of 5 people on two separate occasions, but I really couldn't fault the system.

Myshinynewname · 06/01/2021 16:35

Test and trace can only work with the information they are given. If people with symptoms are not allowed to get a test all the money in the world won't enable T&T to trace their contacts.

Runnerduck34 · 06/01/2021 17:32

When I requested postal covid tests online over xmas the website said only book a test if you have a fever a continuous cough or loss of taste. When one of them didnt come with a return postage label.on the the box i phoned up and was interogated about our symptoms. They definitely did not want you to take a test unless you have one of the three main symptoms and a sore throat isnt one of them.
We lied about symptoms to get tested. out of 6 family members 3 were positive, out of those one waa asymptomatic and one had a blocked nose and headache and one did have red flag symptoms of fever and loss of taste.
The other 3 of us did not catch it even though we live in close quarters in same house ( no spare bedroom, only one family bathroom)
Its not peoples fault if they only get tested if they have main 3 symptoms, they are following government advice.
But given what the government advice regarding symptoms and testing is, its also not surprising it spread so quickly before lockdown.
But have to say thankfully for us symptoms were mild or non existent. You often only hear the worst case scenario on the news and on social media.

inquietant · 06/01/2021 17:40

Johnson said 100% of in-person tests would be turned round in 24 hours. It is something like 16%.

Of course some have a good experience - but over all the system has completely failed.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 18:20

@inquietant have you seen how many tests the uk is doing at the moment compared to other countries ?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 18:24

I think in some areas you can get a test with no symptoms now
Did maybe your mum not think about sore throat as not listed as one of main symptoms and then got another symptom after or someone told her to get one ?
We picked main symptoms so the system can cope after all many have no symptoms at all so would never be flagged up to test
The uk is doing a lot of tests at the moment

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 06/01/2021 18:29

We have actually done more test per 100000 of the population than many countries
