Hi MNers, I need your advice...

I uploaded a photo onto social media over the festive season in which I was wearing a skin coloured outfit.

The amount of comments I’ve had to deal with ‘what the hell are you wearing’ ‘how old are you’ publicly and also via DM’s was astonishing (including a message from a close family member basically telling me I am an embarrassment and need to act my age?!)

Outfit was a nude coloured bodycon dress. Nothing was exposed and there was a lack of skin showing.

It’s got me thinking about how best to respond to this. Should I delete these comments and ignore or challenge head on?

I am early 30’s and in good shape just for further info. Not that this should bloody matter.

Why do people think this is acceptable behaviour?

If I was in good enough shape for a flesh coloured body con dress I'd totally show it off 🤣

However if i was say in my 60s and not so good shape then I might understand the comments

Ignore them and if you felt good and confidant in it then don't let it affect you. Trust me when you've had a few kids and Spanx has written you off as a lost cause and your boobs are down to your naval that's the time to put the body con dresses away but from the sounds of it you are waaaaay off that

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/01/2021 11:19

That's pretty rude of your friends. Did they not look properly and thought you are naked?

HollyGenneroMcClane · 02/01/2021 11:24

‘Wow. Did you mean to be so rude?’

Leave it a few days. Then delete them. You do not need that negativity in your life.

Then maybe post something ‘heartfelt’ after about having been hurt with some comments and how upsetting it was so many people you considered friends felt it was their right to humiliate you for wearing a dress they didn't like. And if anyone else feels this bullied online, you support them in finding the strength to stand up to those bullies.

I also thought this

Don't react at all. You don't need to explain your choice of outfit to anyone, they are just rude, don't rise to it.

CupoTeap · 02/01/2021 11:27

I can't imagine a dress you are describing that would trigger those responses

justilou1 · 02/01/2021 11:28

Or, “My job here is done.” Bow out. You know these people are not your friends. Bin them.

JillofTrades · 02/01/2021 11:28

If it was very close to your skin color then you probably looked naked? And that might have come across as attention seeking ?

Mylittlepony374 · 02/01/2021 11:28

I find it so strange that people feel they have the right to comment on what you wear like that.
I'd just probably send a laughing face and a "I'll wear whatever the fuck I want to thanks".

SadderThanEeyore · 02/01/2021 11:29

Thank for them for showing you their true colours and block them. It's bullying.

Lemonpiano · 02/01/2021 11:34

Was it a nice dress?

BurningRed · 02/01/2021 11:35

Thanks everyone for confirming what I thought! Wankers the lot of them...

@JillofTrades so if I was pale, and not naturally tanned my outfit would have been fine because it was different to my skin tone?!

The colour is a nude/purple. Quite clearly obvious, I had no boobs (chance would be a fine thing), underwear at showing and barely any skin.

I think we need to see the pic

BurningRed · 02/01/2021 11:36

@Lemonpiano I think so. Zara. Id like to wear it again!

Oh god do not say this!!

BurningRed · 02/01/2021 11:39

Basically this!

I’m smaller than the model, I have less boobs also.

How to react to this...

pelosi · 02/01/2021 11:39

I would post another one. Fuck them.

Could they be jealous?

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/01/2021 11:39

I've seen women and girls wearing beigey leggings with a coat and it looks like they are wearing just a coat.

We need a photo, OP.

pelosi · 02/01/2021 11:40

I’m a very conservative dresser but the policing of women’s clothes makes me so angry.

BurningRed · 02/01/2021 11:40

The thing that grinds my gears is the ageist comments - that I shouldn’t wear this in my 30’s?! Bizarre!

OP posts:
Hankunamatata · 02/01/2021 11:41

It looks a bit like underwear

pelosi · 02/01/2021 11:41

No, you don’t need a woman to post a picture of herself for your judgement.

Wtf is wrong with people.

There is nothing to provoke this type of reaction looking at that dress.
