I ,irked the display. The drones were amazing. Would everyone stop banging on about making Captain Tom fund this NHS though?

  1. nobody made him. 2)he wasn’t raising money for the NHS. It was for NHS Charities Together, who support staff and patient/patient relative wellbeing bit wasn’t for PPE or ICU. I thought we had established this at the time. And in the same vein, please stop blaming Sadiq Khan for stuff the government do.
cardibach · 01/01/2021 13:27

I liked. Not irked.

2Rebecca · 01/01/2021 13:28

I saw the Scottish one in Stirling which was beautiful. Now want to see the English one too

cardibach · 01/01/2021 13:29

@krappykrismas

I'm pissed off that it was kept under wraps. We switched the BBC off a few seconds before midnight because Alicia Keys and Jules Holland were looking like they'd be warbling on past 12 with nothing else happening. We only realised we'd missed a show when we saw the coverage this morning.
You didn’t think to look at the BBC schedule which had a programme listed for midnight in between 2 halves of Alicia? You don’t know that there is always a bit about the chimes in Jools Holland?
HeyBaby2020 · 01/01/2021 13:31

It was amazing. Fuck whoever thinks different

HeyBaby2020 · 01/01/2021 13:36

@Cheeselets

You know, I think in isolation it was nice and was meant to indicate hope and praise,, but to me, it spoke as though we are celebrating that the pandemic is all over. To me it spoke as though we'd got through it all now, as though we were safe now. But I don't feel hopeful right now at all. I don't feel safe. I work in an ICU, and I'm so fucking tired. Myself and my colleagues are feeling the worst we've felt since this began. We are at breaking point. This is far, far worse than the spring.

And knowing that the gov collects the funding for the BBC... I just feel fed up because the government are a bunch of fucking idiots and this year has shown that more than EVER before. So yes, in isolation it was heartwarming, but (and call me miserable), I feel like I just can't like it, I can't accept a hopeful note because we are nowhere near out of deep water yet.

It's about to get worse before it gets better and I'm exhausted, scared and lonely (haven't seen my family in a very long time because I work with Covid patients and some of my family are vulnerable).

So yeah. I understand why people liked it, but also, I felt angry 😔

Not the government’s thought though really hun
Furries · 01/01/2021 13:37

I’ve seen it all now. I honestly can’t believe that someone is worked up about Captain Tom going on holiday! Talk about finding doom and gloom in just about anything.

HeyBaby2020 · 01/01/2021 13:40

@DoreenWinkings

It was beautiful.

But I did spend most of the time watching it wondering how many hungry children the money spent on that would have fed Confused

🤣😂
SoupDragon · 01/01/2021 13:45

I thought it was lovely.

The drones were incredible - I still can't quite get my head round how they did it through (obviously computer controlled, I know that!)

SaskiaRembrandt · 01/01/2021 14:05

I really enjoyed it, and whoever programmed those drones is a genius.

I can't understand why some people feel the need to suck the joy out of everything.

SoupDragon · 01/01/2021 14:10

It had to be, though, otherwise people would have headed out to see it, despite requests / orders not too. Then SK would have been in for even more flack!

Except it was apparently recorded on Tuesday.

MillieEpple · 01/01/2021 14:11

I really enjoyed it. I loved the drones but i found the nhs section a bit much to be honest. I got cross when they boasted about the excel nightingale which took nine days to build (but cant be staffed) it felt like propoganda-particularly in a city with hospitals in crisis. But i did think the nightingale drone was beautiful anyway. I cheered up for BLM and the David Attenborough bit.

JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 14:15

I don't think that's true, though.
GabsAlot · 01/01/2021 14:56

my husband saw the drones on tuesday in london it was very clever

LadyGAgain · 01/01/2021 15:02

It was live last night. I saw photos that a friend took from their flat.

LadyGAgain · 01/01/2021 15:02

And FWIW I thought it was fantastic. And very clever use of drones.

JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 15:03

@LadyGAgain @GabsAlot it would make sense for the drone stuff to be done on Tue then the fireworks last night, I guess.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 01/01/2021 15:05

Maybe the Tuesday drones were a trial run if they were seen on Tuesday and last night

ConfusedcomMum · 01/01/2021 15:05

The Tues thing was a practice for the drone display (can't remember which newspaper reported this).

chestnutshell · 01/01/2021 15:06

It was organised by the Mayor of London’s office - not central government. So that’s the first thing.

And we can’t go about our lives thinking that every nice bit of perceived frivolity, art or celebration could’ve had it’s funds diverted elsewhere into something more virtuous because that’s simply not how economies work. There’s a whole network of people who worked on that display, many of which I imagine have had slim pickings for work this year. Think of all those who develop and build the drones, designers of the firework displays etc etc.

LadyGAgain · 01/01/2021 15:08

Tuesday was the practice. The photo I was sent clearly has the drones in it from last night Grin

JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 15:11

@LadyGAgain it must have been amazing to watch it live!

Fizzydrinks123 · 01/01/2021 15:11

It isn't about money going on "arts" it's about money being used to make political statements that suit Sadiq Khan - that's the issue I have a problem with.

It's pushing his agenda - bit like a bit of campaigning mid-pandemic for his agenda.

GabsAlot · 01/01/2021 15:20

yes it was rehearsals for it i think

JovialNickname · 01/01/2021 15:22

I didn't even know it was on. Would have been nice to have known and had a chance to watch it. There was a lot of publicity in around September about ALL London NYE celebrations to be cancelled, so it didn't even occur to me there'd be a u turn, yes I could have checked the TV listing on the night but why would you abkut something that's been publicly cancelled and publicly decried? So yet another thing I, and presumably many others, missed out on. Never mind eh Grin
