There should not have been any. There should have been a curfew.

@ThatWasThat they were NOT government celebrations. They were London celebrations. Nothing to do with national government at all.

So many people whinging about the NHS mention and saying they should fund it instead. When the people responsible for the display are not responsible for funding the NHS, ffs.

So much ignorance.

CrotchBurn · 01/01/2021 08:14

I think in this age of continuous chatter and information overload I would have preferred there to be no talking. It would have been enough to have music and images.

Belleende · 01/01/2021 08:18

Just watched it. I thought it was fab, innovative, reflective, fun. Reminded me of the glory days of the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, back before the country went mad.

CaptainSandy · 01/01/2021 08:23

@Belleende I thought that as well, there was an echo of that in the display.

Britain at it's best. I cried watching it Sad

HereComesYourMam · 01/01/2021 09:16

Objectively, it was pretty impressive. But it made me feel sad rather than uplifted, and I'm not really sure why.

PhatPhanny · 01/01/2021 09:29

Im at a loss for words, some people can really suck the fun out if everything.

You know you'd be a lot happier if you stopped looking for things to hate in everything.

It was beautiful, poignant and was a nice surprise and end to a shit year.

sausageathlete · 01/01/2021 09:34

@SleepingStandingUp

Glad to see David A survived 2020 along with Tom Jones.
Yes cos that really matters when we have been seeing friends and family dying.
CrotchBurn · 01/01/2021 09:36

@HereComesYourMam

If you're anything like me it might be because it was all so rooted in reality: the NHS, the virus, remote working. I prefer things that are more kind of timeless and abstract although that sounds wanky

GreenlandTheMovie · 01/01/2021 09:42

It was all a bit "state-controlled-massive-visual-display-to-uplift-the-proles" for me. The preachy lecturing bits also made my eyes glaze over, so I watched a few episodes of a Danish apocalyptic drama series on Netflix instead. There was more realism and healthy government cynicism in that than I've heard all year in Britain.

Andante57 · 01/01/2021 09:44

@Bizawit

Agree OP. I only saw bits of it, but after the year we’ve had!! Bunch of fascist crap.
In what way was it ‘fascist’?
Beachybeach · 01/01/2021 10:07

The drone show? Absolutely brilliant.

The 5 minute incredible firework show? Bad taste, waste of money and what are we celebrating?? Why didn’t we keep the fireworks to post covid/when theatres can open again/festivals start/family businesses can pay their bills/NHS not at bursting at the seams?

CasperGutman · 01/01/2021 10:11

I find it a bit hypocritical to praise the NHS whilst simultaneously stabbing them in the back.

That aspect made me a little uncomfortable, but then I remembered that the display is put on by (I think) the Greater London Authority, led by Sadiq Khan, a Labour politician.

Maybe reminding people that the NHS is being badly let down is not entirely a bad thing?

Whatafustercluck · 01/01/2021 10:12

I really enjoyed it and confess to having shed a tear.

I am no fan of the current government BTW.

chomalungma · 01/01/2021 10:14

Didn't see it but I see it's annoyed the Daily Mail who are blaming the BBC because it was on the BBC.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2021 10:17

I actually liked it. Some of the messaging was a bit off for me, but it was nice to have a surprise. I'm trying to find joy where I can and that was a moment for me.

CherryLilt · 01/01/2021 10:19

I like it a bit more if it annoyed the DM
. What are they annoyed about?

PhatPhanny · 01/01/2021 10:21

@OhYouBadBadKitten exactly!

ignatiusjreilly · 01/01/2021 10:21

It was all completely live, not pre-recorded.

CherryLilt · 01/01/2021 10:22

Ok. Had a look and they don't like Black Lives Mattering, NHS and David Attenborough talking about climate change. Sounds about right for the nasty DM

Therarestone · 01/01/2021 10:23

The drones were amazing, far better than fireworks imo.

malificent7 · 01/01/2021 10:23

It was lovely...we cannot wallow in misery all of the time. Id love to see some more cash for NHS though.

Remmy123 · 01/01/2021 10:25

I thought it was good but Why did they have Alicia Keys singing New York just as we saw New Year in? Weird

Therarestone · 01/01/2021 10:26

Oh ok I see what the issue is. Yeah anything that upsets DM is good with me

TheVanguardSix · 01/01/2021 10:27

GreenlandTheMovie that’s my kinda party! Grin

Admittedly, I didn’t watch the Mass Games so I can’t comment.
