am watching now. Patronising propoganda. so naive, so upsetting

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 01/01/2021 10:34

The start of trite Vogon-esque poetry had me switching off before the first stanza was complete.
There was already too much of that in 2020.

JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 11:05

@whoamongstus

I thought it was deeply embarassing that they paraded the Captain Tom drones about in their lightshow like it isn't a failure on the behalf of the government to fund the NHS adequately, and we let a hundred year old man drag himself up and down the garden to raise money.

I hate this horrible little country sometimes!

It was organised by the Mayor of London, not the government. He's not in charge of NHS funding, so of course he can celebrate Captain Tom.

I didn't realise it was on @sally067 until I saw a FB post from Sadique linking to a Daily Fail article bemoaning the pro-EU / BLM themes. So yes, the DF readers are frothing at the mouth, bless Grin

I just watched it on catch up. I thought it was fabulous and I cried pretty much throughout. It made me think back to 2012 and the NHS tribute at the Olympic opening ceremony (the government tried to squash that too but Danny Boyle refused to budge). As an NHS worker, I felt it was an appropriate and welcome tribute.

The turtle at at end...Sad

JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 11:09

@nosswith

There should not have been any. There should have been a curfew.
There were no crowds, no people watching except from their homes. No one new it was happening.
Orf1abc · 01/01/2021 11:10

I watched it this morning, thought it was quite brilliant. A poignant tribute to such a difficult year.

HmmSureJan · 01/01/2021 11:16

BLM had no place in there and I switched off as soon as I saw it. Black Lives Matter as a concept is true. BLM the politicised, organised Marxist group should get absolutely no promotion.

OP have you changed your view now you know that it wasn't a government event, but one organised by the Mayor of London, so a Labour politician with no control over NHS funding?
Sinful8 · 01/01/2021 11:24

This would be the labour mayors NYE celebrations yes?

So the opposite of the government?

chomalungma · 01/01/2021 11:29

And you can't tell the difference so you switched off?

Are you virtue signalling your beliefs?
Maybe it should be cancelled and you should complain to OFCOM about how offended you were?

chomalungma · 01/01/2021 11:31

@HmmSureJan

Did you also think about complaining to OFCOM about the Vicar of Dibley when she took the knee and talked about racism?

200 people did. No doubt people like you will complain about this as well.

titchy · 01/01/2021 11:31

I thought it was really good - reminded me of Danny Boyle's Olympic opening ceremony.

Boris didn't organise it...

PurplePansy05 · 01/01/2021 11:39

I didn't think it was bad. Perhaps I'd prefer something abstract personally, but I enjoyed it and liked the use of new technologies. Thought it was very clever. I don't think it was put on by the Govt so disagree with some earlier comments. Happy New Year!

No. I just didn't watch it.

Sadiq Khan just knows how to push the right buttons Grin

CherryLilt · 01/01/2021 11:43

Was the EU flag in it? Cool!

I know, right? Grin I'd like to know how many "locked down Londoners" are actually raging about this.
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 01/01/2021 11:45

Well since it was our mayor I’m just amazed he didn’t get the baby pink and baby blue flag in these somewhere...

chomalungma · 01/01/2021 11:47

@CherryLilt

I think that people may have thought they saw the colours so assumed it was the EU flag colours.
JedwoodDeadwood · 01/01/2021 11:50

Definitely EU colours. Not sure if the flag was in there too. I think just having purple and yellow would be a good way making them point intended. Though I'd also be up for the full flag!
iwantavuvezela · 01/01/2021 11:53

@Belleende I thought the same about how it brought back feelings of the Olympic opening ceremony-
I had a little tear watching it

Waitingforsunshine · 01/01/2021 11:58

It was amazing and a very apt summary of 2020 by the London Mayor. So very proud to be a Londoner.

ConfusedcomMum · 01/01/2021 12:00

So many awesome moments; the drone 'eagle' riding from the ashes, Coldplay's 'every tear is a waterfall' playing during a 'waterfall' firework display on Tower Bridge, the rainbow lights and fireworks tribute to the NHS and the funny reference to video calls.

kursaalflyer · 01/01/2021 12:03

Never normally see in the new year but loved seeing London lit up and the drones were amazing.

springdale1 · 01/01/2021 12:08

@GrapeLipBalm

Agree whoamongstus. Reminds me of this Henning Wehn quote
@grapelipbalm that quote is nonsense! Germany has a food bank run by volunteers and funded by donations called Tefal that feeds 1.6 million people a year in Germany.
SpiderGwen · 01/01/2021 12:09

@ohfourfoxache

Very clever and very pretty.

But I sat there wondering how much PPE could have been bought instead.

Or how many ventilators. Or nursing posts funded.

Then I saw the NHS symbol and my blood pressure went up.

I find it a bit hypocritical to praise the NHS whilst simultaneously stabbing them in the back.

But then I’ve always been a cynical old goat Grin

Given that it was Sadiq Khan and the GLA, it was the antithesis of the Tory Government. In fact, there were plenty of times when the display held up two fingers to the gov't - like celebrating the EU colours, NHS and Capt. Tom.

Hearing David Attenborough brought tears to my eyes.

Skipsurvey · 01/01/2021 12:10

it also made me emotional
