am watching now. Patronising propoganda. so naive, so upsetting

OP posts:
PimlicoJo · 01/01/2021 12:17

I'm a lockdown Londoner. I'm not raging.
I think Sadiq Khan's been a terrible mayor, but I think this hit just the right note.

notdaddycool · 01/01/2021 12:20

I thought the EU colours were the act of a petulant child who didn’t get his way and whilst I’m fully behind the core concept of Black Lives Matter i think their Marxism means the mayor should find a better way of expressing the sentiment. But as we all now know he’s an activist not a doer who has drastically increased the PR payroll at city hall whilst screwing up crossrail and seeing the murder rate rocket.

notdaddycool · 01/01/2021 12:21

That aside I quite enjoyed it

Rinoachicken · 01/01/2021 12:21

I enjoyed it.

I’m more annoyed at how captain toms money has actually been used. In my trust, we all got an extra days annual leave. Neighbouring trust they all got a fancy water bottle with a superman logo saying thank you NHS.

I can think of better ways to have used the money!

DHdweller · 01/01/2021 12:22

Hope you just turned it off. I don’t watch anything I don’t enjoy then moan about it

Actions of a petulant child, or something to recognise that London overwhelmingly voted remain and where EU citizens are part of the lifeblood of the city and ensuring that we keep functioning, particularly in the NHS right now?
SpiderGwen · 01/01/2021 12:27

I'm with Redwood - London was overwhelmingly Remain, and will be hugely affected. Had nothing featured any reference, Khan would have been accused on not 'celebrating' it. the changing of the bridge lights at the start fromn EU blue and gold to Union flag red white and blue was entirely appropriate marking the moment Brexit came into affect.

Chocachocaholic · 01/01/2021 12:30

I didn't even realise this was on until I just read this thread now! Just watched them and got really emotional and had a little cry. (To be honest I cry at the London fireworks every year) it was really well done given the circumstances and very fitting I thought. Really brings home what a year it has been. I try and look on what is happening as history in progress. One day our children and children's children will learn about this.

CherryLilt · 01/01/2021 12:31

Cressida Dick said government cuts led to a rise in crime. But yeah, blame it on sadiq

I missed the first minute or so and while I thought the drones were clever, without using the London Eye to do fireworks and make pretty patterns it meant they weren’t able to do anything particularly interesting or special or different so they were all a bit samey and disappointing. They also seemed to be over really quickly.

They then cut back to Alicia Keys who was smirking as she introduced her next song saying it was really great - there was a hint of Auld Lang’s Syne for a moment or two of that and then she started to drone on about New York and how great it was. Thought that felt like a kick in the teeth to everyone in the country, the year they’ve just been through and the coming year. Completely inappropriate.

People won't listen. In my area we have people shouting about Sadiq wanting to extend the congestion charge out to our borough, setting up petitions against him etc. Sadiq Khan is actively fighting against this government decision. But no, it's all his fault, apparently Hmm

CarolEffingBaskin · 01/01/2021 12:45

Everyone banging on about how 'amazing' and 'inspirational' Captain Sir Tom Moore is, like it's not embarrassing in the extreme the the NHS needed a 100 year old man to wander up and down his garden to raise money for them.

And wilfully ignoring that the same 'inspiration' fucked off to Barbados on holiday over Christmas whilst that same NHS was on its knees.

What glorious hypocrisy we praise.

The lights were political willy-waving shit from Khan, as ever.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 01/01/2021 12:49

Who went to Barbados?

You mean this?

What did you want him to do, keep walking to pay for the ICU staff we don't have thanks to the government's chronic underfunding of the NHS and hostile immigration policies? Hmm

I thought it was amazing. To the guys that organised it all you must have worked so hard to give us something beautiful to end the year, Thankyou.

myhobbyisouting · 01/01/2021 13:09

I thought it was cringeworthy. The rest of the world must be looking on thinking wtf is going on there.

A drone display to the nightingales we can't staff and the 100 year old veteran who had to schlep up and down his garden to fund our health service.

Embarrassing

Fizzydrinks123 · 01/01/2021 13:11

Not government - Sadiq worked in secret with BBC and met police to keep it secret - absolute waste of money for sure - but it's Sadiq and BBC you should direct your anger towards...

rosy71 · 01/01/2021 13:18

Which government fireworks were these????
If you mean the ones in London, they are nothing to do with the government. They are Sadiq Khan's responsibility. I thought they were brilliant, really touching. The drones were great.

olympicsrock · 01/01/2021 13:19

Loved it! Very uplifting

Quaagars · 01/01/2021 13:19

YABVU
Thought it was brilliant.
Knew there'd be a thread on MN cry arsing about being woke though.

krappykrismas · 01/01/2021 13:20

I'm pissed off that it was kept under wraps. We switched the BBC off a few seconds before midnight because Alicia Keys and Jules Holland were looking like they'd be warbling on past 12 with nothing else happening. We only realised we'd missed a show when we saw the coverage this morning.

krappykrismas · 01/01/2021 13:21

And we had to search to find it on iPlayer ... It wasn't even in the suggestion list.

It had to be, though, otherwise people would have headed out to see it, despite requests / orders not too. Then SK would have been in for even more flack!
