aibu to not understand why dog owners let their dogs sleep with them in bed?

to get things straight i am a pet lover and grew up with many different dog breeds. some with great personalities of their own and good company but they are pets at the end of the day right?. i never had any problem if a dog wanted to sleep in my bedroom but they had a dog's bed. surely encouraging a dog to sleep in your bed is setting the dog up for a fall? god forbid something ever happened to you as the owner and the dog had to be rehomed it could be a nightmare for the dog's new owner if they are strict about dog/human boundaries. so what do you think?

My dog used to sleep on my bed as a child. My immune system is so immense that corona is afraid of catching me. It probably is a bit gross tbf. But no harm done. Grin

Emeraldshamrock · 27/12/2020 18:44

My Dsis wipes her pooches bottom with a baby wipe, no crumbs on that arse.

Because he has dementia, and it helps to minimise the sundowning. He settles far better and I actually get to sleep. He has his own fleeces that go on top of the duvet. When they get put on the bed at night, he knows he is allowed on there. Good for keeping his brain active and in a routine.

AnyFucker · 27/12/2020 18:45

Much the same as sleeping with my husband 🤷‍♀️

Fair play Grin

I let my dog in my bed, each to their own I’ve really no opinion on it.

What I do wonder about though is that every second day someone posts this. Not to be a cow but why do people care if other people let/don’t let their dog/cat sleep in their bed...it’s really nothing to do with you or anyone else who posts this same exact question, it’s such a strange thing to get your knickers in a twist over...

vanillandhoney · 27/12/2020 18:46

Because this isn't designed to be goady at all Hmm

How about because he's my dog and it's my bed, so if I want to let him sleep there, it's nobody else's business?

Besides, he makes a very good foot warmer.

hibbledibble · 27/12/2020 18:47

My dog sleeps in bed with me. She is genuinely odourless (smooth coat), and is cold is she sleeps elsewhere. She has a dog basket but it's just for day time lounging when she fancies it. She sleeps in a basket on her own when I'm on holiday happily.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/12/2020 18:49

Depends on the dog and breed

I had a huge hairy, farty Springer - he slept NEXT to the bed on the floor (on his bed)

Current dogs - both small and have never farted and don't shed - both ON bed (one gets under the covers and puts his head on me if he gets cold)

Frenchdressing · 27/12/2020 18:51

My dog doesn’t even go upstairs. Each to their own I guess.

Sparklingbrook · 27/12/2020 18:52

I wouldn't like it but I am not and will never be a dog owner, as I don't like dogs much. Grin I have TV in the bedroom though if anyone wants to have a tut at that.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 27/12/2020 18:52

My dog is huge and honking Envy. I love her dearly but she seeks out anything smelly on daily walks and gleefully rubs herself in it. I can’t fully bath her often as it’s bad for her skin so she whiffs but we love her anyway. I’d not want her in bed with me. The farts are something else too. They’ve woken sofa nappers before.

The dearly departed cat slept on the end of the bed though and was a comforting weight on the feet.

MispyM · 27/12/2020 18:52

I used to have our pets on my bed when I was little... Nothing wrong with it and lovely in a cold house.

The dog is allowed everywhere except the bed. Sex and intimacy with a dog on the bed isn't my cup of tea...

caringcarer · 27/12/2020 18:53

I love both of my dogs and 4 cats but they all have their own crates and baskets to sleep in downstairs where they can get in and out of flap in case they need the toilet.

RoseDog · 27/12/2020 18:53

I share my bed with dog, cat and dp...standards are low in our house Grin

sproutsnbacon · 27/12/2020 18:54

No way am I sharing a bed with two labs, especially when one farts a lot and the other lets out the occasional poo. They don’t go upstairs or on sofas either. Their beds are in the kitchen the warmest room in the house.

Spodge · 27/12/2020 18:54

I tried it but the dogs snored like traction engines and one kept lying on my head. They were far too hot and the experiment was a massive failure.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 27/12/2020 18:58

I occasionally let my smaller dog sleep in bed bed (by my feet) if I’m feeling lonely, and after once accidentally discovering a pair of my friends boyfriends pants on the floor when staying at their house I can tell you which is cleaner Shock

JuneFromBethesda · 27/12/2020 19:00

Really interesting post @WiddlinDiddlin 🙂

My dog came from another home where she slept on her owner’s bed. She doesn’t sleep on ours, at least not at night time - she sleeps on the spare room bed (which is now hers 😄).

She will sleep on our bed occasionally during the day but shows no interest in spending the night there. So the OP’s speculation that a dog would have a hard time being rehomed to a house with different rules, is wrong.

I used to allow our spaniel on our bed as it's what DH has grown up with, dogs in his room and on his bed. I never really liked it, he used to disturb me getting up and down off the bed all night and it got the bedding grubby. It was comforting though to cuddle him. We also had a semi detached at that time and I knew it'd disturb the neighbours if we moved him out.

We had to get him used to sleeping on the landing when I had DS and it's one of the best things I've ever done. He looks at us mournfully every night and very occasionally I'll let him back in and cuddle all night. My bedroom stays clean even if I do still hear him shuffling about. I do think getting your dog to settle in your absence is one of the best things you can do for them.

Frazzled2207 · 27/12/2020 19:04

Well before I had kids I could not fathom why on Earth you would have a baby in bed with you rather than safe in a cot. Realised that was complete rubbish the night my first baby came home!

thosetalesofunexpected · 27/12/2020 19:05

@BooFuckingHoo2

😂😂😂😂 L.o.l
Funny as fxxck

XenoBitch · 27/12/2020 19:05

My greyhound sleeps in/on my bed. On cold nights, she makes my bed all toasty and warm. I could not imagine not having her with me at bedtime.

pontiouspilates · 27/12/2020 19:07

I'm a dog owner and really do not like the idea of a dog on or in my bed. However, I have an adult DD and my dog runs straight upstairs in the morning and jumps in bed with her for a snuggle.

HeyDouglas · 27/12/2020 19:08

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

I read some threads on here and wonder why some women let their bloke sleep in their bed tbh.
