aibu to not understand why dog owners let their dogs sleep with them in bed?

to get things straight i am a pet lover and grew up with many different dog breeds. some with great personalities of their own and good company but they are pets at the end of the day right?. i never had any problem if a dog wanted to sleep in my bedroom but they had a dog's bed. surely encouraging a dog to sleep in your bed is setting the dog up for a fall? god forbid something ever happened to you as the owner and the dog had to be rehomed it could be a nightmare for the dog's new owner if they are strict about dog/human boundaries. so what do you think?

I’m happy to have my dog on the bed.
It’s up to her as she’s the boss 🐶 🐩 🐕

What do I think?

I think you're massively overthinking it with your "But what if the owners die and it has to be rehomed" Xmas Grin

Dogs are adaptable. If it can adapt to new owners, a new home, a new garden, new area and probably a new vet, it can adapt to not sleeping on the bed.

DressingGownofDoom · 27/12/2020 18:31

I used to let my little dog sleep in my bed and it was lovely, she used to curl up against my leg and was so warm and cuddle and I loved her little snores. I did realise one day my bed smells like a dog bed and is, in fact a dog bed. Which was a bit offputting. She's passed away now, i would love one more cuddle with her.

WorraLiberty · 27/12/2020 18:31

@AnyFucker

Each to their own.

But I do think that the people who sleep in bed with their animals are in huge denial about the smell, the poo crumbs, the hygiene and the fact that it isn't actually a good idea from the pet's POV wrt boundaries.

Much the same as sleeping with my husband 🤷‍♀️😂
mbosnz · 27/12/2020 18:31

Each to their own

Well, this part at least was accurate.

No, no denial here. I'm just not as hung up as some obviously are about maintaining a clear pack hierarchy, or my much vaunted and clearly superior in practically every way, personal hygiene. . . Grin

My cat might lick her bum, shed, and fart like a beast but I reckon she's nicer bed company than a fair few humans. . .

Floralnomad · 27/12/2020 18:32

Each to their own , if I owned a large , slobbery dog with lots of hair I wouldn’t let it on the bed , as it is I have a very short haired , medium sized dog who is kept immaculately clean so he is allowed on the bed . He doesn’t sleep all night with us though because he has his own double bed in a different room so we all get a good nights sleep .

Yabu. I used to love sleeping with my dog beside me. I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks about it. Live and let live.

Ginkpin · 27/12/2020 18:34

Our dog (spaniel) sleeps at the foot of our bed on a blanket. The blanket is washed regularly and she is washed regularly, I wouldn't want her in my bed or on my sheets, but on a rug across my feet is fine. She loves it and comes to bed when I go to bed.

I don't understanding locking dogs in kitchens an utility rooms (post crate training) to sleep 🙅‍♀️

6hoursawayfromdisaster · 27/12/2020 18:35

I'd imagine it probably changes by breed, but my two sleep on the bed. Both have their own blanket that gets changed regularly, their bums, legs and tums get a wipe down each day after their last walk and both sleep at the bottom by my feet.

I find it comforting, totally understand why someone else might hate it. They are both crate trained though, so on the off chance they end up overnight in the vet its not a totally alien experience.

Strawberryshortcake40 · 27/12/2020 18:35

For years I felt the same way, my dog slept in the kitchen, never went upstairs. I thought it was really pretty grim to have a dog on/in the bed. Then we got another dog. She has breathing difficulties, sleep apnoea and the chance her larynx could collapse in the night. So she sleeps with me so I can deal with problems when they arise rather than finding her dead in the kitchen in the morning.
Actually I rather like having her in bed with me, she’s very warm and snuggly. I hoover my sheets every day and wash them every other day, but she’s probably cleaner than my cat (who also sleeps in the kitchen Grin)

Branleuse · 27/12/2020 18:36

My dogs and cats sleep where they want, as long as a human doesnt need it and as long as they dont keep waking me up.
I dont really care that its a bit gross. I do have to change my bedding quite frequently though

AnnaFiveTowns · 27/12/2020 18:36

And only somebody with absolutely no knowledge or understanding of dogs would reference the woman who had her face ripped off by her dog.

mbosnz · 27/12/2020 18:37

I let the kids into my bed when they were apt to have a poonami nappy, too. . . and when their arsewiping was a little on the less reliable side. Smile

coffeeandgin26 · 27/12/2020 18:37

My parents sleep separately. They both have a dog with them - the one that sleeps with my mam (has anxiety - the dog, not mam!) cuddles up to my mam and almost 'spoons'. She has her head on a pillow and under the cover. The one on my papas room starts off in his own dog bed but ends up at my papas feet.

Cribbles · 27/12/2020 18:38

After 33 years of marriage I know it’s over but what do you actually say or how do you move on ? My husband seems to just moan all day long about everything and anything (things that don’t even concern him!) Anyway, he has worn me right down , he can’t say anything nice about me but I also know he can’t really live/cope without me either ! I want freedom , I don’t want another man I just just want to come home from work and not listen to someone being so negative .
We have brought up our family (6 children) who we are all so proud of (I am 53) . I know I love and care for him but I don’t think I’m ‘in love with him’ which actually hurts and difficult to admit .
Anyone else in or have been in this situation? If so, I would love to hear your thoughts / experience.
Thanks x

Crappyfridays7 · 27/12/2020 18:40

I loved my golden retriever he was a good boy but massive and smelly - just doggy smell and v hairy
We kept upstairs dog free and hair free the cats can go up but don’t sleep on beds.
Not a chance I’d have fit in my bed if my boy was in it. And I’d have liked all my clothes to not be covered in dog hair if possible. Fine when I’m walking and downstairs but I don’t care what other people do with their dogs though sleep with them or don’t

Emeraldshamrock · 27/12/2020 18:41

Same reason I allow my DC sleep on my bed because I love them it comforts me. DP is a hairy beast I'm use to him shedding.

Thatsanotherfinemess · 27/12/2020 18:42

Poo crumbs Shock

This!

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2020 18:42

It would be a bit bizarre to make my decisions as a pet owner based on a theoretical future where my dog is owned by someone else.

I let the dog sleep in bed with me sometimes. I consider it to be no one else's business really as it doesn't effect anyone else.

SimonJT · 27/12/2020 18:42

Things humans have left in my bed

Wee
Poo
Vomit
Snot
Drool
Sweat
Semen
Blood
Hair
Puss from a wound infection

Things our cat and dog have left in the bed
Fur

Malin52 · 27/12/2020 18:43

We look after a friends dog occasionally and she sleeps on our bed. It clearly gives her comfort and we like it too. I've never considered the 'hygiene' factor because we aren't hysterical germophobes.

Some people apparently let vomity, unhousetrained, snotty small children into their bed which I really can't understand. So yes. Each to their own

FippertyGibbett · 27/12/2020 18:43

My bed is the dog’s bed.
I love it when I wake up in the night and feel that warm lump next to me.

Norwester · 27/12/2020 18:44

I love my dogs but yeah ... they belong at floor level. Not on human beds and sofas.
