aibu to not understand why dog owners let their dogs sleep with them in bed?

to get things straight i am a pet lover and grew up with many different dog breeds. some with great personalities of their own and good company but they are pets at the end of the day right?. i never had any problem if a dog wanted to sleep in my bedroom but they had a dog's bed. surely encouraging a dog to sleep in your bed is setting the dog up for a fall? god forbid something ever happened to you as the owner and the dog had to be rehomed it could be a nightmare for the dog's new owner if they are strict about dog/human boundaries. so what do you think?

@firthy85

i think what it is with me is that so many dog owners seem to treat taking the dog to bed as the same as letting their dc come to bed with them. sorry but it's not the same. your child overtime learns that they have their own bedroom and it gradually fades out. dog's don't have the same mindset as humans and i think sometimes people are so rediculously obsessed withtheir dogs that they can't seem to understand the difference. they are part of your family but they are far below the chain of your family environment
Why do you care so much about what other people do?
pigsDOfly · 27/12/2020 20:06

I don't care whether or not people understand why I let my dog sleep on my bed.

I'm pretty certain that thousands of people do things that I can't see the point of either, but if I'm honest, I can't be bothered to care.

mbosnz · 27/12/2020 20:06

In our house, it's the cat, then it's the parents, then it's the kids. Unless the kids have higher needs at the time, in which case it's the cat, then the kids, then the parents. . . which of course, is most of the time, lol.

coronafiona · 27/12/2020 20:10

@AnyFucker

Each to their own.

But I do think that the people who sleep in bed with their animals are in huge denial about the smell, the poo crumbs, the hygiene and the fact that it isn't actually a good idea from the pet's POV wrt boundaries.

Stupid thing to do. Remember that woman who had her fa e ripped off by her dog?
You mean the first french lady who took sleeping tablets in a suicide attempt?

I know the difference between my dogs and my children. Owing to not being a complete imbecile. But thanks for worrying about it for me.
Maybe a hobby? Knitting perhaps? Take your mind off my dogs' poo crumbs and ease your worry that I might accidentally take my dog to school and walk my child...

To be honest I think my sons teacher would be happier if I dropped the dog off at school.

@SimonJT 😂😂😂

My Yorkshire Terrier used to sleep behind my legs. Once when my DH and I first got together we were house sitting for my parents and in the middle of the night he screamed "WTF is that?!" and leaped out the bed.... It was my dog that had snuffeled his way up to the top of the bed after sneaking up the bottom of the duvet!! 😂😂 DH is not a dog person and never will be. 🙄

Meh, because I want to 🤷 he usually sleeps at the end of the bed but has been known on particularly cold nights to get under the covers!! He keeps my feet warm Grin

But as per PP, I don't live with my pet on the basis that one day they might need to be rehomed if I were to die...

Chesneyhawkes1 · 27/12/2020 20:22

I sometimes let them. Mainly the little ones.

If DH is on night shifts and I'm not I let my big dog sleep with me.

When I was having treatment this year and spent most of time in bed, he never left my side. Literally ran out to do his business and came back to me.

I found it so comforting having him there when I felt like shit. And DH said he got frantic if he couldn't get back to me.

Now I'm better he doesn't expect it anymore.

mbosnz · 27/12/2020 20:22

I remember dossing down on a mate's floor. Then the dog got into bed and snuggied up behind me, while DP got ready for bed. Then DP got into bed, and Fred the setter stretched out his paws and sent DP toppling out of bed, pmsl. DH never really saw the funny side to that one. . .

ludothedog · 27/12/2020 20:22

My dog was absolutely not allowed to sleep in my bed, problem was she didn't listen! Broke my heart when she was too old and arthritic to jump up into bed with us.

Look at that were sleeping face, who wouldn't want a snuggle with that wee hairy beastie!

ludo thank you for the photo. Case closed. No more evidence needed. Grin

AlwaysLatte · 27/12/2020 20:25

Not here, I love my dog but I don't want dog slobber and hairs in my bed. I've never allowed cats in either.

CCC1 · 27/12/2020 20:27

Our dog spent nearly five years downstairs. We were then burgled. Shortly after my husband needed to work away and I told the dog to come upstairs - even though he’d be the shittest security dog ever! I make absolutely no apology for it. I was properly scared.

These days (three years later), he tends to come up with me til I’m asleep, make his way back down for a snooze and then come back up when he hears me stir. He’s the best.

MrsExpo · 27/12/2020 20:31

Our dog sleeps in his own bed in our room and sometimes (especially on cold nights) I wake up to find him curled up between us. Totally ok with that: he’s a lot more warm and cuddly than DH .... Grin

AlwaysLatte · 27/12/2020 20:31

My son has repeatedly asked to let the dog sleep on his bed though and while it's it not for me I wouldn't mind except that in the future I worry about an elderly dog trying to manage two rather steep staircases to get up to his room so it's best not to start it. Occasionally he'll have a sleepover in the snug downstairs and I let him have the dog on his bed then.

Lynchpin2018 · 27/12/2020 20:32

I was brought up to not let animals onto beds, cats weren’t an animal we could have as our family “didn’t do cats” and animals, especially dogs, were a lot of hard work and “tying”...tbh if it was up to my mother there would never have been any animals in our house at all.
So when I left house the first thing I got was a kitten who I still have now...she’s 20 years old. I have since had three more cats (two have sadly passed away) and we also have a dog who is gorgeous. We’ve since got two new kittens and they are utterly adorable. I wouldn’t let the dog sleep on our bed to begin with...it wasn’t the thing to do (still drilled into me) but we tried it during lockdown as she was waking hubby up at 4am and we have never looked back. She sleeps all night long at my hubby’s side and doesn’t cause any problems at all. I would also like to add that if anyone came into our house, they would never know we had any pets...so clean, hair free, and fresh smelling and even my mother now loves all the animals!! Moral of the story: do what you want to do, not what someone else thinks you should do. x

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam
