to get things straight i am a pet lover and grew up with many different dog breeds. some with great personalities of their own and good company but they are pets at the end of the day right?. i never had any problem if a dog wanted to sleep in my bedroom but they had a dog's bed. surely encouraging a dog to sleep in your bed is setting the dog up for a fall? god forbid something ever happened to you as the owner and the dog had to be rehomed it could be a nightmare for the dog's new owner if they are strict about dog/human boundaries. so what do you think?

I slept in the guest room last night and invited the dog to join me. So I guess I need to revisit my previous statement.

But such a nice, calming and warming presence.

Why are some people claiming that it's right for the dog to be in the owner's bed because of dogs being pack animals? Yet other times they dismiss the pack/alpha theory altogether? While at the same time insisting that crate training is the thing to do. While also going out to work and leaving the dog alone for hours at a time. All of which seem at odds with each other.

If you want to have your dog sleeping in your bed, fine. But it does to me seem to be one of the current trends with dog ownership. A PP mentioned that years ago this just didn't happen. They didn't dress their dogs up either in silly outfits, or carry toy breeds round in special dog handbags. Or buy their dogs a Christmas card. Or pay £2k for a backyard bred labrapinschyorkie or whatever.....

Our Labrador had elbow Dysplasia ☹️ hopefully when she is eligible for her surgery and rehabilitation she will be sharing our bed with us she is flea treated wormed and clean our other dogs shared our bed I see no problem with it if they are clean .We hate the fact she sleeps downstairs on her own. We joke she doesn't do stairs .She is such a sweet girl

Curly

Well, dogs on the sofa has always been normal for me.

Dogs on the bed... Well, I couldn't sleep last night due to he cold. Preheated the bed with warm bottles, the dog helped me stay warm. Big advantage imo.

Because I love him and I love cuddling him

@SadSeal what your sister's dog is doing is concerning. It sounds like resource guarding and needs to be dealt with before it escalates. The solution may be that the dog is not allowed on furniture. Or if it is allowed, there are very clear rules. I haven't had a dog that resource guards, so don't have any advice other than to get professional help as it can get very serious.

For normal dogs though, how could you resist snuggling this little buggle on the couch? He clearly loves me. There's quite the battle for #1 snuggle position on the couch. You can see the other dog settled for the cushion.
