Hi all, partner and I have disagreed when the tree should come down.

Growing up in his house it always come down in Jan.

In our house it was often Boxing Day.

But in more recent years I’ve wanted to keep the tree up until at least New Year’s Day but partner wants it down ASAP.

So aibu to keep the tree up for another week?

Technically it doesn’t have to be down til the 12th night?

I just worry I’ll feel so gloomy taking the tree down after such a poop year 😫

I'm dying to take mine down now me. It's irritating me more than it should Grin

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 27/12/2020 14:31

Ours came down today. Personally I’d love to take it down on Christmas Day evening but I’m way to exhausted for it. Maybe in the future when all the dc are adults. We can’t take it down Boxing Day as it’s ds3’s birthday so today it is. Nice clean and tidy house to start the new year.

caperplips · 27/12/2020 14:34

@PersonNonGarter I did wonder if there was an element of that to the whole thing too...

poppet31 · 27/12/2020 14:37

New Year's eve probably, if not before. I like it all fresh for the new year and you can't clean properly with all the decorations up.

Defcon4 · 27/12/2020 14:43

St Knut’s day, 13th January is the tradition here in Sweden.

QuantumJump · 27/12/2020 14:44

Ours comes down in January but before 12th night. This year probably 3rd Jan (as DH and I go back to work on 4th Jan).

Flyingfreeasabird · 27/12/2020 14:44

Boxing day?!

Where I live (central Europe) you often see Christmas lights and even trees still up well into January! I think it's a great way to cheer up bleak, long winter nights. There's no "rule" about when you should take the tree down so do it when you bloody well want!

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/12/2020 14:48

Depending on when I'm back to work and how the days fall on the 5th or 6th. Or there abouts.

I think it's really grim taking it down boxing day or today. Not least because boxing day is for sitting on the sofa. But it's still Christmas. I feel the idea Christmas ends on the 26th really sad.

Tanfastic · 27/12/2020 15:00

Surprised by the amount of people taking their tree down on Boxing Day but each to their own. Mine will come down next weekend when I'm off work. Normally I do it around the 29th/30th.

SachaStark · 27/12/2020 15:01

Twelfth night here.

We put ours up on Christmas week, so it was December 21st this year.

Of course, if you put it up mid-November like some people I know Hmm you’ll be tired of it by only the THIRD day of Christmas.

... We haven’t even gotten to the swans-a-swimming yet!

CorvusPurpureus · 27/12/2020 15:03

I was brought up to believe that it was unlucky (& also probably 'common' according to DM Hmm),not to have it down by Twelfth Night.

For practicality, these days that means 'a couple of days before dc go back to school' so we can then segue into the joys of sorting out PE kit & pencil cases - which doesn't look like being a priority this year to be fair...

I reckon I'll start muttering about taking it down on NYD, but as it's ds's job these days he'll finally have responded to the nagging by the 5th.

cautiouscovidity · 27/12/2020 15:07

Always the weekend closest to (before) twelfth night in our house.
This year it will be 2nd/3rd Jan so everything is back to normal before we return to work / school (or not Hmm...)

Neron · 27/12/2020 15:26

Boxing day without fail

melj1213 · 27/12/2020 15:55

Dd was born in Spain where the really big Christmas celebrations is Kings Day on January 6th abd we still celebrate it even though we are in the UK so our tree always comes down the weekend after that.

TicTacTwo · 27/12/2020 15:56

2nd/3rd Jan ish to coincide with bin day.

sunshineandshowers40 · 27/12/2020 15:57

Took the tree down today, rest of the decorations will be NYD. They have been up since the 1st Dec though.

winterbabythistime · 27/12/2020 15:57

We'll probably take it down on the 4th

MispyM · 27/12/2020 15:58

On the 6th (in theory). But sometimes a bit later if we're too busy. (might have to wait until Saturday)

StoneofDestiny · 27/12/2020 16:01

Can't believe people take the tree down on Boxing Day - still celebrating Christmas then.

Up until recently it was always 12th night - but likely to be a couple of days before that this year.

HeronLanyon · 27/12/2020 16:02

12th night ! Think this year it will at least be stripped by then (to avoid bad luck Confused) but it might stay in place a few days longer due to council tree collection ‘schedule’.

wendz86 · 27/12/2020 16:12

New years day, feels like a fresh start and i like having it up for new year.

HeronLanyon · 27/12/2020 16:13

Much earlier when I mistakenly buy a tree which drops needles if I so much as look vaguely in that direction !

starlight36 · 27/12/2020 16:21

Jan 5th. I like to keep the lights and decorations up as long as possible. Our tree doesn't go up until mid December though - as we have a couple of family birthdays we want to keep special as birthdays and not merge into Christmas.

honeylulu · 27/12/2020 16:26

Twelfth night (evening of the 5th January). I like the twinkly cheer of coming home and in from the cold from work those first few days of the new year, putting on the tree lights and lighting the fire.

I do start gradually taking down and packing up all the other decorations from 2nd January, just because there are so many in the various different rooms. By the evening of 5th it's literally just the tree (real), tree lights and three smaller artificial prelit trees in other rooms. (I know that's a ridiculous amount of trees but I love Christmas!)

The nativity stays up until Candlemas (2nd Feb). The three kings don't arrive until Epiphany on 6 Jan so it's the only way they get to join the party!

It seems a shame people "can't wait to get rid of the clutter". Buy some nicer decorations next year and you might enjoy looking at them.

NameChange84 · 27/12/2020 16:29

It’s always 12th night for me, at the very earliest the day before but I hate the tree coming down before Epiphany or going up before Advent
