Hi all, partner and I have disagreed when the tree should come down.

Growing up in his house it always come down in Jan.

In our house it was often Boxing Day.

But in more recent years I’ve wanted to keep the tree up until at least New Year’s Day but partner wants it down ASAP.

So aibu to keep the tree up for another week?

Technically it doesn’t have to be down til the 12th night?

I just worry I’ll feel so gloomy taking the tree down after such a poop year 😫

12th night or nearest convenient weekend before. Sat 2nd or Sun 3rd.

It's dropping badly so might get rid sooner.

DappledThings · 27/12/2020 13:49

I hate the sight of a Christmas tree after Christmas.
So you hate the sight of them from 6th January onwards then, not yesterday. Fair enough!

S111n20 · 27/12/2020 13:50

Mine will be up another week.

FAQs · 27/12/2020 13:51

5th

nosswith · 27/12/2020 13:52

Twelfth night for me.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 27/12/2020 13:55

I think it's really sad to take them down now, it's still
Christmas and I'm enjoying feeling relaxed and no pressure to do anything. The decorations are part of the cosy holiday feeling. DD goes back to college on 4th so I might take them down on 3rd, 12th night is tradition though and that's the 6th Jan.

PriceEmUp · 27/12/2020 13:58

Has always been in the new year here.. by maybe the 5th jan.

However DD was born on New Years Eve so I think we’re going to take it down on the 30th Dec ready for her birthday to come away from the Christmas theme during her birthday.

speakout · 27/12/2020 13:58

I love the starkness and bareness of the time after christmas.
After weeks of mayhem and mess it always feels very relaxing to get my house back in order again.

soughsigh · 27/12/2020 14:01

6th Jan. But we don't put it up till mid December.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 27/12/2020 14:01

Twelfth night here too.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 27/12/2020 14:02

Mine never went up, I honestly didn’t mind one bit. The record is up Christmas Eve, down Boxing Day.
I hate the mess and faff and it always looks so forlorn after Christmas Day. Probably because I am utterly hopeless at doing the tree and if I don’t do it nobody else will!

TheBigMelt · 27/12/2020 14:04

Growing up it was 5th of Jan. I usually take it down on New Year’s Day or latest the 2nd. This year I’m getting rid on NYE as I just want to start the year afresh. Might leave up some fairy lights though 😊

caperplips · 27/12/2020 14:08

I still don't get the taking them down on Christmas DAY!! We were eating our Christmas dinner at 8pm with candles & fairy lights . I just can't imagine taking it all down that night.
Reminds me of my mother who always served dinner in the daytime at Christmas and as soon as the main course was served she'd announce mournfully 'well that's it all over for another year' . It always drove me mad - such a damper!
We're still in full Christmas mode here & will be until 5th Jan

Frozenintime · 27/12/2020 14:08

Today

CharlotteRose90 · 27/12/2020 14:09

Mine came down yesterday. Doesn’t feel like Christmas this year so it came down and it’s back to normal

anothernc4you · 27/12/2020 14:09

Usually later but we wanted to deep clean today so gone today!

Twofurrycatsagain · 27/12/2020 14:10

12th night. Then I buy some flowers because everything seems drab.

PersonaNonGarter · 27/12/2020 14:18

It’s another hidden class thing. Posher = tree up later, tree down later.

Kimakima · 27/12/2020 14:22

@Jalapinot

Mine came down this morning.
Me too. I love the feeling of being tidy again. I also don’t like piles of presents hanging around so they all get put away.
PatchworkElmer · 27/12/2020 14:22

@DappledThings it doesn’t irritate me before Christmas! I just want to get small DC (and the house in general) back to some kind of normality. And it’s a big job I’d rather be done with before we go back to work.

Armi · 27/12/2020 14:23

Christmas has only just started!

Do people who take their trees down on Boxing Day not know this? Of course, I suppose if you put it up in October you’ll be pretty sick of it by now and ready to get your Easter crap out.

Pixie2997 · 27/12/2020 14:24

Thanks all. I’m not ready for it to go yet! When my dc were younger I was always quick to get it down but now they are older it usually stays up longer. Thinking New Year’s Day or 2nd Jan but definitely before they go back school! Not ready to let go of Christmas yet after this poop year! 😭

Dd asked my when Easter is this morning and when they will be getting eggs 😩

SciFiScream · 27/12/2020 14:26

In childhood we put ours up12 days before Christmas and took it down12 days after Christmas (5th Jan).

Now we put it up 12 days before and take it down before the year turns.

Keeping the candles and fairy lights all year though. We bought new, non-festive, fairy lights in October. I love them. Going to get more! They look lovely year round and festive when the rest of the decorations are up.

ChristmasAlone · 27/12/2020 14:30

Usually a weekend after Christmas or NYE what ever is more convenient. We don't do huge amounts of decorations, so it's not a huge job. Our tree is also a potted one which stays in the house after Christmas.
