Celebrities daughters in their underwear

AIBU to think it's sadly pathetic that so many daughters of celebrities think it's a necessary step in life to raise their 'fame' by posing in their underwear - Jonathan Ross's daughter Honey being the latest.

@OunceOfFlounce

Yes, the comments Jesy received were awful. But my criticism of people posting nearly naked selfies is not about whether anyone looks good or bad, it's that they are perpetuating the sexualisation of women and girls in an awful feedback loop. They feel bad so they post a sexy picture, their sexy picture helps to make all of their followers think about their own bodies in those terms too.

Anyway, I think we've kind of reached a place of understanding and I really am going to get ready for bed now, g'night!

Yeah, I agree with you. My original comments weren't really aimed at you, and in hindsight I might have gone off on a bit of a tangent and I'll apologise for that. But years of working with youngsters who "didn't eat today because someone on instagram called me fat" and seeing the damage first hand...people underestimate it, and I get a bit ridiculous over it.

Have a good night!

Its drives me mad. even people on here terrified to draw a line and say something is wrong because they're so desperate to seem laid back and be liked, to not be seen as 'opinionated'.

Ultimately these young women are doing it for money. Look at the frenzy over OnlyFans. Where there is money there is no 'empowerment'. If more people said this and drew a line we wouldnt be having such a widespread mental health crises with young women. Liberal feminism will always serve profit and mens needs first, which is why men and those with money describe any trace of radicalism in feminism as 'opinionated' or my personal favourite bullshit buzzphrase 'wrong side of history'.

Julie Bindel is right as always.

Why don't these rich celebs get someone to filter their social media presence - so that they don't actually hear the criticism. I could never understand Princess Diana responding to snipes in the Daily Mail - just don't read it.
A whole generation of lives spent staring at a phone screen........ and getting stressed and unhappy by it.

I agree with this. Anyone actively seeking out celebrity since at least the 1990s knows what they're letting themselves in for. You can't ask people not to express their opinions in a democracy. This isn't China.

I never watched the Jesy documentary, but I have seen online comments about her that were hideous, so I felt very sorry for her. During the first lockdown she is one of the ones who almost daily posted "sexy" photos online for the validation. At that time I thought, you have an opportunity here to stay quiet, refocus, and get off the hamster wheel for a bit. But she kept on doing it.

She has now left LM and again has the opportunity to regroup and get well. But yesterday she posted another photo, pretending to have just woken up, hair arranged just so, make up on, false lashes on. My sympathy for her has waned somewhat, she has the means to retreat for a bit or forever. She craves the attention, she may not like the negativity that comes with that as well as the positives, but attention is everything.

Sheleg · 28/12/2020 10:28

The girl is broken, and hanging onto life by a thread.

She should get the hell of social media then, if that's the case.

SapatSea · 28/12/2020 11:28

Melange I agree about JN. "Just woken up" my a*se! Solo career in the offing (perhaps delayed by CoVid). She needs help, appears to be addicted to SM and the abuse - not a role model for young girls. You've plenty of dosh, get some help.

I think as a society we should be praising unsung women, scientists, engineers, people in caring roles, ordianry women overcoming adversity etc. not holding up half dressed, artifically "enhanced" women as something to aspire to. Girl "power", "empowerment" seems to be all about attracting the prized "male gaze." I know as a young woman, even though I was known as being "hard as nails" that I felt the pressure and competitive urge and the weight of socialisation to attract that gaze too.

A few years back my DD came home from secondary school outraged. It was International Womens day and they had an assembly on it - Lady Gaga prancing around in her knickers was played and eulogised as a female role model - I despair! really was that the best the school could come up with?? The teacher told me that the group of teachers organising assemblies had struggled to come up with someone Shock it was "so much easier with men." I wanted to pull my DD from that school.

So inspiring - dancing in your pants. Career day must be a blast...

I'm far from laid back or want to be liked ...I certainly am opinionated. Just a different one to you.

Wheresmykimchi · 28/12/2020 14:32

@Melange99 @Sheleg

I agree but has it occured to you that having known absolutely nothing else since the age of 18, she doesn't even know where to start doing something else?

Jesy didn't leave for a solo career. That won't happen. A record label wouldn't touch her. She left because of her mental health issues - the industry not the band .

Agreed about Gaga.

HerselfIndoors · 28/12/2020 14:42

Only Jesy knows why she left - but even if it is MH issues, that doesn't preclude a solo career at some point.

But yes that photo is all about being as attractive and sultry as possible and not an actual "just woke up" look.

The same thing with the stuff Honey Ross says - it's so confused. It's all about "feminism" and body positivity whatever you look like, then she goes on about being attractive and posts pics of her twerking arse. Either broadcasting your sexual appealing to men matters in how you value yourself, or it doesn't. Make your mind up.

HerselfIndoors · 28/12/2020 14:43

appeal

user1471565182 · 28/12/2020 14:46

Lady Gaga ffs. Women in Russia triggered the February revolution with an international women's day march. Is it really so hard for teachers to google something like that, or even just to know that?

That’s outrageous. I’d have made an official complaint to the school/Council/governors etc etc : which, by the way, to me is empowering- the ability to complain and stand up to this shit...no doubt I’ll be called a Karen... hmmm, see the link? “Empowerment” in 2020 is....Lady Gaga, not Karen. Guess I’m old fashioned.

It isn't either / or though , is it?
longwayoff · 28/12/2020 15:38

Oh bloody hell. It's SO DEPRESSING to think our daughters see this as a way forward and a positive thing. Its just the same old misogynistic thrust towards democratising porn but wearing different knickers - or not - with your knockers out. Grim.

Genuine question. Do you not think that women (I assume) speaking about other women like this adds to the problem?
Wheresmykimchi · 28/12/2020 15:41

@Grellbunt you would complain to the governors because a school assembly played one of the best selling female artist of the decades songs? Confused

StoneofDestiny · 28/12/2020 15:55

Must admit it's pretty grim if educated professionals can't think of suitable female role models for young women to look up to. They clearly just thought of 'famous celebs'.
What an opportunity missed to introduce them to people they might never have heard about - proper education.

You’d think Greta would be a really obvious one. I know she’s not fighting for woman’s rights but she’s at least fighting for something she believes in. Whilst remaining fully clothed!

Possibly...but I don't think I believe a group of teachers would tell a parent they 'couldnt come up with anyone '.
Melange99 · 28/12/2020 16:08

@Wheresmykimchi In answer to your genuine question, no. None of the posters here are causing females (young or old, slim or overweight) to seek attention via social media. There is no tearing down of females - there is bemusement, disappointment, despair, and disgust at how females are ramping up the sexualised images, how women are falling over themselves to be seen as just tits and ass which has a sell by date on it. They want to post and get the "you are beautiful" comments, but don't like it when others disagree and make derogatory and offensive comments.

Just like you can't control the mainstream media if you decide to try and use it for publicity, you can't control social media either. It's not compulsory to post on Instagram etc, and if it is a compulsion, help needs to be sought. Jesy is a woman not a young girl, she can get the help, she is in a better position than most. It is the Jesy's that are causing more and more people to go down this route not people commenting on the issue on MN.

Oh come on. You cannot put the blame at someone with clear MH issues door. She has cried out for help. You calll it disappointment and bemusement ,it's another man's sneering and bitching.

Wheresmykimchi · 28/12/2020 16:24

Incidentally @Melange99 I was referring more to the use of 'knockers' 'tits' etc.
