Celebrities daughters in their underwear

AIBU to think it's sadly pathetic that so many daughters of celebrities think it's a necessary step in life to raise their 'fame' by posing in their underwear - Jonathan Ross's daughter Honey being the latest.

OP posts:

@OunceOfFlounce

Wheresmykimchi I posted some info from a UNICEF report on the previous page about the impact of sexualised images of women and girls. You could check out the link to find out more about the issue?
I did read your post but I'm not sure what point you're making.

My only agenda has been to remind people that these are actually human beings they are speaking about and that people in the public eye can't win. That was all.

It's Christmas - I'm not really into researching this issue in great depth.

NameChange37836 · 27/12/2020 21:15

@OunceOfFlounce that UNICEF link was really interesting, thanks for sharing it. Makes for hard reading doesn’t it?

Wheresmykimchi · 27/12/2020 21:16

@NameChange37836

I don’t believe “a couple of the Jenners” are international supermodels. Kylie Jenner definitely isn’t.

Posing in underwear and being an influencer are so synonymous with each other that I find it hard to decide which one annoys me more. The worrying bit is who these influencers are influencing to also post public photos in underwear.

Kendall Jenner is the world's highest paid supermodel.

I'm not sure what you mean by your second post but I can gather - but I think that's a very slippery slope that is a bit unecessary.

Cocolapew · 27/12/2020 21:18

Kendall got into modelling because of who she is related to, and the contacts that come with it. Same as Kate Moss' daughter, she doesn't look any different to millions of other teens but she's on the catwalk , purely because of her mum.

People are always going to call out bad behaviour when they see it. What constitutes bad behaviour and what constitutes acceptable comments is subjective.

You’re opinion that posters have crossed a line is perfectly reasonable but I do hope you can see why posters don’t want to stay silent.

OunceOfFlounce · 27/12/2020 21:20

You're welcome, NameChange37836 !

Wheresmykimchi you asked 'Is posing in your underwear any worse than being an "influencer"?' and my post showed that one contributes heavily towards sexual violence, abuse and murder. I guess my point is that yeah, sexualisation is pretty bad.

We know people are human beings (?), we can still find the fact we live in such a heavily sexualised, misogynistic culture regrettable.

NameChange37836 · 27/12/2020 21:20

Kendall Jenner isn’t “a couple of the Jenners”. She’s one.

Littlepaws18 · 27/12/2020 21:20

So flaunting your body (whatever it looks like) and being one of the top world earners should be something we admire???

I would rather admire and follow the work of the Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

Now last time I checked I don't think she was on any Forbes list, but wow what she has done for girls education is priceless!!!

You miss my point.

I don't have an issue with the culture in general being criticised, I agree with you.

I have an issue with individuals being discussed and torn apart int he manner earlier in the thread.

I said a couple have done well for themselves, which I think they have, and then made the point about modelling. Thanks for the lesson in reading, but back atcha.

Hang on.

This whole thread started with a young woman with clear learning needs who has been abused (I am railling this point but it's true) posing in her underwear. It then descended. What has Honey done that is "Bad behaviour"? She might be doing something you don't agree with, but it isn't bad behaviour,

Posters don't have to stay silent, they can have their opinion like I can have mine, It's how the world works.

geekone · 27/12/2020 21:23

@Melange99

Nadia Sawalha has been behaving oddly lately. Lots of shots in bras and pants, or naked, all in the name of empowerment. She has had a lot of body issues in the past and she claims this is her currently being sorted about it. But it rings hollow. You can feel free of something without plastering yourself in your bra and pants for the "You Go Girl " comments. It all feels a bit frenzied and sad.
She’s a partner in an underwear company. She selling it really like cheap advertising 🤷🏻‍♀️
shadypines · 27/12/2020 21:24

i find it sad. The underwear posts, the baby bumps, the operation scars etc etc etc When did normally private things stop being private and deemed suitable fodder for the constant attention of Joe Public? Where does this need come from? I'm guessing, rightly or wrongly, it's lack of attention from parents as it all screams attention seeking.

I like Malala. A lot. I also really like Megan McKenna. I look up to both women for various reasons.

The world isn't black and white.

And having worked with young people for quite a long time, I promise you that their mix of role models is what makes the world go round. Hammering home to them that they can only like the intelligent ones who they don't identify with does nothing but push them further into the social media industry that "understands " them. It's a balance,

Wheresmykimchi · 27/12/2020 21:26

In the same way that Olly Murs and Robbie Williams have a massive career with an average voice that wouldn't be out of place in Saturday night karaoke.

Not everything is about parents.

OunceOfFlounce · 27/12/2020 21:28

"I have an issue with individuals being discussed and torn apart int he manner earlier in the thread."

Wheresmykimchi , this thread is about the children of celebrities seeking fame by stripping off. They don't have to be in the public eye but seem to be trying to get famous by getting naked.

When you asked about whether posing in your underwear is any worse than being an "influencer", it seemed like you hadn't read my earlier post or why would you be asking that question?

Cocolapew · 27/12/2020 21:30

There's loads of distinctly average singers etc, but with Kendall and Lila Moss it is about their parents Confused

I'm not sure what you mean, if I'm honest.

Thousands of youngsters follow people like Molly-Mae who makes a living off just....living.

She doesn't take her clothes off though, but is that OK? Given that she has far more influence over young people than Honey (who I'd never seen before in my life before I googled her).

I can read what the thread is about, I'm asking why it's any worse than the hundreds of social media influencers who don't seem to attract these kinds of threads.

NameChange37836 · 27/12/2020 21:31

Bad is subjective. Bad behaviour is subjective. And after reading that UNICEF article, it’s hard to see posting public photos in underwear as anything but bad. I certainly can’t find a reason that it’s good.

Littlepaws18 · 27/12/2020 21:32

That's the point. The whole system is fucked. It's fucked that women feel the need to show off their body for validation, it's fucked that society lets vulnerable people and non vulnerable people do it. It's fucked that celebrity is based on talentless (looking good is not a talent or showing off your body), who hunters who feel the need to be superficial at any turn. It's fucked that some of the highest earners make their bucks by doing this. And don't even get me started at the audience, what internal message is this promoting? Producing the next bunch of superficial nobodies that desire to show off their bits for the most likes.

This has got to change, there is not one person in this food chain that benefits.

Wheresmykimchi · 27/12/2020 21:32

@Cocolapew

I don't think that's true. Being a Kardashian might have given her the leg up but you don't remain the world's top supermodel by that alone.
Cocolapew · 27/12/2020 21:32

There has been several very long running threads about influencers on here.

Gosh isn’t that a stark truth; what a sad reality.

Although maybe Mark Zuckerberg benefits.

shadypines · 27/12/2020 21:34

Strange when I think of women and empowerment I don't think of all the nonentitiy slebs baring all their flesh, I think of women like Rosa Parks or as earlier poster said Malala. Posing in bra and pants equals empowerment ..utter drivel.. (Alesha Dixon is always spouting this crap on BGT) Get over yourself Nadia and the like put some clothes on or don't (just keep it as your business) and go and do something useful.
