Where are all the mumsnetters who:

  • are mid-millennial
  • Extremely Online
  • left wing
  • probs on Twitter
  • do not think gaming is the scourge of society and causes you to turn into a zombie
  • does not know anyone who unironically plays golf

Bonus points for ex-emo kids.

Do you exist?

I'm 1 year younger than you but don't tick many of your boxes. No idea what extremely online means (and after a Wikipedia search am still confused as feck😁)

I think it's a really interesting thread! I don't know anyone my age who would fit into your criteria really. At school I hated the emo/chav/greebo labels, I had friends who conformed to a lot of these but I always preferred to just be myself and do/wear whatever I wanted. I always have listened to a particularly wide range of music.

If I knew people who would judge me for being on mumsnet, we wouldn't be friends. It sounds very tiresome and boring to have to always try to 'be cool'.

Twitter is a cesspit and should be shut down.

Didn't do any emo'ing. However, full disclosure, I'm of the group popularly maligned as t*rfs.

IamTomHanks · 24/12/2020 05:56

Youngest Gen X-er or Oldest Millennial here.
Don't think I classify as extremely online but probably a level somewhere just below that.

Definitely left wing, especially by MN standards and since I live in the UAE and I'm not gender critical I am obviously the devil incarnate and a handmaiden on this site. Yet, I keep coming back.

On Twitter, but only to get the latest news and Donald Trumps latest insane rant. Never actually read the comments.

I don't game myself, but the kids and the husband do, so I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

I actually know someone who is a professional golfer. He's a twat.

Not emo but grunge.

My hair has been every color, I've had multiple piercings, and tattoos, but I can't be arsed to color my hair anymore so I'm rocking the natural grey. Piercings are gone because they always got infected (turns out I'm allergic), and only the tattoos remain, with more to come.

enchantedspleen · 24/12/2020 06:22

@hauntedtree I know, the transphobia on here is honestly horrible, but I come back. The site has given me genuinely good parenting advice through PPA, so im grateful there, and I read AIBU like some would read Take a Break. For the same reasons too. It's good to zone out to. But the transphobia on here... cripes. I don't speak up on posts because frankly I'd get dogpiled.

I'm actually 31 so not a wee bub anymore, but I honestly kind of loved the group's and I kind of took elements of all of them growing up. Music has no boundaries to me and my playlists include wildly differing genres from emo, to punk, classic punk, folk, baroque classical, musical soundtracks, comedy songs, house, grime, even a bit of bardcore has been creeping in.

There's nothing wrong with belonging to subcultures. I actually miss seeing groups milling about, I haven't seen that since the late 00's. Kids belong to online subcultures now, rather than outward physical ones. It's fascinating, really.

You'll do for me! I was going to ask why you're up at this hour but living in the UAE would explain that - I've got no excuse, I'm just trying to clean/mumsnet quietly so I don't wake my boyfriend up haha

@MrsMiaWallis

That is one of the most cringeworthy OPs I think I've ever read.

Why would you even take the time out of your life to write this?

evenmoreforthemoor · 24/12/2020 06:29

@Posturesorposes

Hi OP.

Millennial here, massively on Twitter, fascinated by internet cultures to the point of specialising in researching all things digital.

Find your OP massively try-hard and cringeworthy.

What a mean and judgemental post.

whoamongstus · 24/12/2020 06:32

Oh there's been tons @evenmoreforthemoor. Never fails to amaze me how good people are at being snarky and weird about threads that clearly weren't aimed at them!

Pulled the short straw on my team and stuck working on Christmas Eve! Hoping to sneak out soon!

whoamongstus · 24/12/2020 06:36

@PandemicPavolova

I shudder when people proudly declare themselves to be very left wing.. Any political extremes terrify me... Being in the middle is always far safer and more balanced.. One extreme regime and thought pattern will never suit us all.

I've studied enough and read enough to understand the sheer terror of the very left wing. I cannot fathom why anyone would openly proclaim this, unless they are imply ignorant of what they are saying. This is no different to someone saying they are very right wing.

I meant in comparison to British politics generally, not 'let's do a full-blown communism'!

@enchantedspleen

Meeeeeee, I wasn't emo though. I was more of a deviant art kid who liked invader zim just a little bit too much and owned lots of tie dye and very big boots. Very left leaning, been on the internet for exactly too fuckin long, used to play pokemon competitively. Baby is 7 months old and she is so absolutely freaking awesome. We're out there, OP!
I LOVE this, what Pokemon are we talking?

@Sickofbroccoli

I’m on the cusp of being too old to be a millennial but I fit most of the other categories fairly well.

I think golf is regional rather than generational though, in the city I went to uni in every fucker seemed to play golf whereas where I grew up nobody did.

Good point. I'm from a very socially deprived town - nobody played golf. But the parents of kids I went to school with in nice middle-class nearby town probably did seeing as there's a famous golf course down the road.

I am also sick of broccoli. Fucking tiny trees.

I've just been reading through your thread.

I have little in common with you but you sound really...nice, and funny and kind.

I cannot get over how people see a nice thread like this and still find patronising vile stuff to say. It's such a sad thing to see. Mumsnet is not a nice place to be at the moment.

HigherFurtherFasterBaby · 24/12/2020 06:55

Older Millenial
Still Emo
Septum Piercing
Pink Hair
Student (Masters)
Bleeding Heart Liberal

And about to sit and play Fallout New Vegas Grin

PotholeParadies · 24/12/2020 06:57

Mumsnet remains a nicer place than twitter though.

Yup
PinkertonRab · 24/12/2020 07:25

OP you're confusing your emo with your pop punk. And Drive Thru would never have signed someone as mainstream as Fallout Boy or Paramore.Wink

I also don't get the emo/gaming crossover. My friends were all emo/indie/pop punk/skater but not a single one was into gaming in any big way. Maybe because I'm older Millennial (84) this wasn't a thing?

Yes to MySpace, left/liberal politics though.

I don't think having kids changes things. The 'alternative' kids still have alternative music and fashion sense, the 'townies' (our local term for the JD sports type) are still the same too. Maybe toned down versions.

Subcultures do still exist. There's a whole kpop/anime thing, roadmen, cottagecore.

evenmoreforthemoor · 24/12/2020 07:25

@PotholeParadies

Mumsnet remains a nicer place than twitter though.

That'll be why I don't go on their either.

Such a strange past time - getting angry/PA at strangers on the internet.

PotholeParadies · 24/12/2020 07:32

Well, I can't argue with people in RL any more, on account of lockdown.

Twitter can be a nice place, but only if you use it in quite a limited way. Eg. Being very careful who you follow and interact with, I've found that it's best not to reply to tweets by people with a large following as they are more likely to have people trolling in the replies.

It's a shame not to get to use it properly, but there's also some really interesting people on there so I can't quite drag myself away.

louderthan1 · 24/12/2020 09:12

Me I suspect:

Born in 1981
Leftie
Don't know anyone who plays golf (although I do have a horse)
Not keen on gaming but only because it bores me
No blue hair
No kids
On Twitter but more active on Instagram
Mixed feelings about the trans thing

evenmoreforthemoor · 24/12/2020 09:16

At least you seem to pick half decent arguments with an actual point - rather than on individuals!
hauntedtree · 24/12/2020 09:36

@enchantedspleen i feel exactly the same; i keep coming back here because it's useful to me in some ways, but it will never feel like a community that i can be part of.

PotholeParadies · 24/12/2020 09:59

I'm insulted. It's 5/8 decent, fanks.

Lookslikerainted · 24/12/2020 11:07

Who plays golf ironically?
