Where are all the mumsnetters who:

  • are mid-millennial
  • Extremely Online
  • left wing
  • probs on Twitter
  • do not think gaming is the scourge of society and causes you to turn into a zombie
  • does not know anyone who unironically plays golf

Bonus points for ex-emo kids.

Do you exist?

What's extremely online? And mid-millennial? I thought millennial was from 2000 onwards?Confused
Millennials are 1980 - 2000 I think. So I am bang in the middle.

'Extremely online' = en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extremely_Online

@DelphineWalsh

They're on Twitch
Good point. Maybe I should have asked 'who here also has a Twitch account', that would have been a big indicator!

@Gardeniaofdelights

I fit most of your criteria except that my dad is a golf fanatic Grin
I'll allow it hahahah, hi!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 22/12/2020 16:58

Seems no one website can agree on when Millennials were born. The one i found said 1981-1996 Hmm
Either way I'm at the older end. Extremely online sounds like a load of wanky bollocks. I was too old to be an emo, my ex SIL and BIL were though.

movingonup20 · 22/12/2020 16:59

I meet half your criteria, bit old and ex plays golf

Posturesorposes · 22/12/2020 17:00

Hi OP.

Millennial here, massively on Twitter, fascinated by internet cultures to the point of specialising in researching all things digital.

Find your OP massively try-hard and cringeworthy.

MrsMiaWallis · 22/12/2020 17:00

I have a Twitch account and I'm 55.

HAHA. Why?
OP posts:
movingonup20 · 22/12/2020 17:01

Oh and I have a twitch account and even as of today a discord account (apparently required for Christmas activities). But dd2 is more indie than emo, just like her mum, her clothes are like mine from the 90's!

DianaT1969 · 22/12/2020 17:01

How much screen time qualifies for 'Extreme Online'?
Just enough to to function in the non-virtual world (clean clothes, but never cleaned a skirting board or oven in your life), or enough for Social Services to remove your children because they are neglected?

CremeEggThief · 22/12/2020 17:03

Ah right. So are post-millennials born in 2000 and afterwards?

Why would you not admit to using Mumsnet? Is it just because of preserving your anonymity or is it seen as embarrassing?

Not sure what's tryhard about it? I am genuinely interested - nobody I follow on Twitter or am friends with in real life (almost all of who meet the criteria in my post) would admit to being on Mumsnet. The 'online' of Twitter seems really different to the 'online' of Mumsnet, despite the fact that both arguably have similar structures to the culture (lots of time spent here, lots of collective history, distinct groups of shared values, lots of arguments, descends into occasional chaos).

I'm not 'trying' anything. I just genuinely wondered if there was any crossover between the kind of people I know in my day-to-day life and follow on social media, and the people I see on Mumsnet who, as far as I have seen after a few years on here, have little to no cultural crossover.

All of the above but not on Twitter.

I think post-2000 are Gen Z, but don't quote me.

And yeah, it's seen as variously embarassing/very twee/just...not for people like me. Which having been on here it definitely is at times, but there are also a much broader range of people on here than I anticipated when I started reading threads. So I wondered how much crossover there was with people who are roughly like me or whether I'm just a weird outlier haha!

parlourpalm · 22/12/2020 17:06

'People like me'

Op... you need to stop pigeon holing

HeddaGarbled · 22/12/2020 17:06

How do you play golf ironically?

I'm the former. There are probably the latter though.

Luckily the only dependents I have are cats who would murder me in my sleep if I neglected them.

Millenials were born early 80s to mid 90s.

I'm on older millenial. Annoys me no end when people say university students are millenials. Maybe the odd mature one is, but most will be Gen Z. It's a bit of a misleading term though, maybe Gen Y is better.

parlourpalm · 22/12/2020 17:08

You have no clue if anyone is who they say they are

CremeEggThief · 22/12/2020 17:10

I use Twitter and consider myself a socialist. I hate both gaming and golf though.

I didn't realise Mumsnet was perceived as a bit twee and embarrassing, until I picked up undertones in one of your posts, but I don't really care about that sort of thing.

Cheers for answering my questions. Smile
