Kind of laughing. Kind of annoyed. Figured out why the virus is spreading though...

Pointed out that visiting multiple shops for non essential items was poor form in Tier 4. Also said if people actually needed food and couldn't access it I could help with referrals.

I mean are we all going to multiple shops looking for stollen bites, cocoa nibs and gingerbread houses?

Is anyone actually taking Tier 4 seriously?

YANBU - Taking it seriously
YABU - Not taking it seriously, visiting five shops for non essential items is fine.

(Daily Mail Journos - feel free to join the group for your scoop - it's like overheard in waitrose on steroids)

You can't fix people unfortunately.

All you can do is act sensibly yourself. People being selfish and making poor decisions are not going to listen to any one else's opinions and you are wasting your time trying.

ForestNymph · 22/12/2020 09:45

Mind your own business OP

This.

Though it is funny that the admins were all too happy to have mass bitching in Tier 2. It sounds like a positively delightful group full of people with too much time on their hands

Angel2702 · 22/12/2020 09:51

YABU Christmas is going to be awful if someone can get a few bits to make it bearable then let them. FFS this is like the Easter egg police all over again.

Supermarkets can sell whatever stock they have and it’s not your job to decide what is and what isn’t essential.

People are having to pull together Christmas out of nothing having expected to be with family of course people will be trying to get Christmas food last minute.

Sportsnight · 22/12/2020 09:52

If you use smaller shops (butcher, baker, grocer) then you have to visit more than one. I prefer to do that as they’re less busy than the supermarket and you don’t have so many shared contact surfaces.

MrsMiaWallis · 22/12/2020 09:53

@Yokey

Yabu

If you're trying to police other people's shopping practices, don't be surprised if they don't want to listen to you.

This.
yetanothernamitynamechange · 22/12/2020 09:54

Of topic, but I thought the whole point of gingerbread house is you make them yourself?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 22/12/2020 09:54

YANBU, but people are fucking thick.

LuaDipa · 22/12/2020 09:55

I don’t think this is worth the argument tbh. People may be making slightly questionable decisions but I think the last minute announcement has caused all of this. People were sorted and organised and now there are rumours of food shortages and families are having to rush out to buy their Christmas meal as they had are no longer allowed to spend the day with family as arranged. It may not be essential but if an artisan gingerbread house is going to bring someone a bit of joy this year then I couldn’t get worked up about it.

motherxmas · 22/12/2020 09:55

Here in Notting Hill mums am sure that it's exactly the same....cos you know special food items are very very important ;-) Frankly, if they are that important - order them online - you've got the cash!

The question here is not people going to Tescos or Aldi to find vodka....the issue is a load of quite wealthy people (often women) running around tiny Italian and French delicatessen to find just the right thing -all crowding into tiny shops and spreading the virus. When a) right now getting just the right thing is not important and b) if it is online it.....

It's like March all over again - and everyone coming back from their skiing holidays bringing the virus back.....but of course, if you ever suggested that they might think of isolating themselves they would not have dreamed of it.

Notthe9oclocknewsathon · 22/12/2020 09:56

Really? Haven’t you got better things to do? Our Christmas plans like many had to be rearranged this week meaning no Christmas food or presents (which were at our relatives). Lots of people in that situation, going to more than one of the very few shops open is hardly crime of the century.

motherxmas · 22/12/2020 09:57

and whilst yes, this is a first-world problem - skiers coming back in the spring led to a massive spike in cases in the UK. And these tiny actions dotted all around London might very well keep the rates up - same as with all the lovely artisanal markets that are still open etc.

PrincessBuggerPants · 22/12/2020 10:01

And I just had a comment deleted from Breastfeeding Yummy Mummies Off Topic for putting an eye roll emoji into a comment.

It was in response to somebody (who claimed to work for the NHS FFS) who had travelled from Kent to Manchester asking if they really had to isolate to prevent spreading Covid-19.

People are being very, very defensive about their decisions at the moment OP, and unless you want to get shut down.

I sort of agree with you BTW OP, but in the grand scheme of rule piss taking going on at the moment I don't think it is that bad. In fact there is an argument that staying out of supermarkets you have to travel to, and shopping local in smaller shops, could be a good shout.

ShatnersWig · 22/12/2020 10:01

My girlfriend has intolerance for lactose and gluten. Are you suggesting if Sainsbury's doesn't have the necessary free from items, she should starve rather than go to another shop for them?

toomuchtooold · 22/12/2020 10:02

I wonder if they would be so into the stollen bites if they could see our local supermarket here in Germany where their stylish Christmas snack is piled 10 high (and on sale - turns out that nobody here likes it either, they were just buying it to take to each others' houses and now we can't!)

Gwenhwyfar · 22/12/2020 10:02

"Out to get a gingerbread house, sparkly table lights (MC compliant of course) and other Christmas non-essential delights. Fucking stupid."

Disagree. If it's making Christmas stuck at home more bearable for people it might make them less likely to break the rules and go visit other people. Christmas is already shit this year - don't make it even worse.

dsaflausdhfiushdfakdsf · 22/12/2020 10:03

YANBU.

Ultimately, people will die having caught the virus from people 'just popping out again for the vol-au-vents'.

It's a connection that some people just refuse to make. It's like sitting in traffic thinking 'this traffic is ridiculous' without accepting that you ARE the traffic.

nosswith · 22/12/2020 10:03

Hampstead and the definition of 'essential' probably are mutually exclusive.

Covidiot · 22/12/2020 10:04

And FFS to all those saying MYOB etc

The fact that you can’t see that it IS our business as in this scenarios, other people’s actions can and do impact on others.

As @SomethingNastyInTheBallPool says, some people are just fucking thick.

tinselearedcow · 22/12/2020 10:06

I thik you are on a wind up mission. I am in tier 4 in Wales. I will go into any shops I wish for whatever I wish. Although I am actually avoiding the shops because I can't bear the Christmas crowds at the best of the times.

It is household mixing along with the schools that has driven this surge, not going to the shops for a non-essential flake.

tinselearedcow · 22/12/2020 10:06

Think.

Covidiot · 22/12/2020 10:07

@ShatnersWig

My girlfriend has intolerance for lactose and gluten. Are you suggesting if Sainsbury's doesn't have the necessary free from items, she should starve rather than go to another shop for them?
Don’t be ridiculous- absolutely no-one is saying that. It’s an essential item. It’s really not difficult to understand.
HitthatroadJack · 22/12/2020 10:07

of course YANBU

it's been done to death. Buying non-essential items during your shopping is absolutely fine, popping in constantly and adding to the crowds in shop is not.

People do not care, and refuse to apply the smallest bit of common sense. It's selfish at best

Who do you think is being penalised? The elderly and people at risk who need FOOD, have to go to the shop, Christmas or not, and end up in a crowd.

If people cannot find better things to do with their time than constantly buying crap and shopping is the highlight of their day, then pity them.

LolaSmiles · 22/12/2020 10:08

It's a connection that some people just refuse to make. It's like sitting in traffic thinking 'this traffic is ridiculous' without accepting that you ARE the traffic
That's my thoughts on many things Covid. There's a lot of people doing what they like but then lots of people complaining that cases are high, they can't do various things but then substituting it with wandering around what few shops are open. They can't (or more accurately won't) consider that their actions are part of the bigger picture.

Topseyt · 22/12/2020 10:09

The Easter Egg police have now morphed into the Christmas food police!

You meant that if they cannot get out themselves to get their gingerbread houses, chocolate yule logs, mince pies, vodka, gin, whiskey, wine and other Christmas essentials they are to contact you and you will do it for them. You along with multiple other volunteers going to multiple shops to do this.

Stop trying to police others. Nobody appreciates that.
