To be annoyed with rule breakers not taking to me

I'm in Glasgow. On Friday my friend (also in Glasgow) got the train to London and brought her 85 year old mother back with her for a 4 week visit. She missed her as have seen her for 3 months so in her eyes it's totally justifiable,. I miss my parents as do millions of others but for the good of the bigger picture and not being selfish bastards we don't all go and visit them and being them across the UK especially when we know not to travel. Shouldn't have left Glasgow area at all and only just did it before it became illegal. Group of friends now not talking to me as they think I'm the selfish one for not understanding she was missing her mum. I'm missing my mum but not seen her for 9 months so far. I'm so upset and just wondering if I'm being wrong. Know people need to do what works for them but surely this is too far?

Sad update from my friend. Both her and her mum have tested positive. They started feeling bad a few days after coming up and her mum has been in hospital since Christmas eve. My friend isn't as ill so stayed at home and they sadly had Christmas apart. Hospital staff think with timescales train journey is most likely where they caught it. Or that my friend caught it on the journey down and then passed it on while they've been together since. My friend is devastated this has happened and now her mum so ill.

I'm absolutely gutted for them both and so worried. Please do not travel unless essential, this is not worth it. Given the abuse I have already had I'm anticipating some ppl will say I'll be pleased about this. I'm not. Stats are getting worse by the hour. Please don't take risks.

I hope her 85 year old mum survives.

The problem for the 85 year old is immense
She will either die alone 🥲
Or come out and be incredibly weak at a weak age anyway
It totally sucks really

SatishTheCat · 28/12/2020 13:14

I’m so sorry to hear this and I hope they recover. It’s quite plausible that this would happen with the high rates in both areas. I agree with you that people need to be more cautious.

Indeed.
countrygirl99 · 28/12/2020 14:12

@Thisisworsethananticpated neither of those outcomes is inevitable. My dentists 94 yo aunt with multiple health issues was a bit under the weather for a couple of days and that was all.

WouldBeGood · 28/12/2020 14:12

What are the chances?

Afternoon, Nicola

Wow. Yes totally unlikely for 2 people from high risk areas to catch covid on a 7hr train journey to another high risk area. Pretty sure the rest of the world is just making up the whole pandemic as well. Mumsnet really never fails does it!?

That’s quite a leap...

Of course it’s not unlikely that people are at more risk of getting COVID-19 if they’re travelling around in crowded high risk areas. I’m a little bit more sceptical about hospital staff sitting around trying to work out whether or not patients caught it on a particular train journey. Although I suppose NHS staff aren’t particularly busy at the moment.

Who said they were sitting around trying to work it out? It didn't taken them long once they asked where she was from. Do you realise the staff talk to patients?

OP if she was so ill with Covid that she had to be admitted to hospital less than a week after the train journey there is absolutely no way she is well enough to be chatting to the nurses.
There is no way of knowing whether she caught it on the journey and the staff wouldn't be questioning her about.

I was one of the people who thought she shouldn't have made the journey but I doubt the nurses are having these conversations.

Bookworming · 29/12/2020 08:37

They all wouldn't be in the same room together all chatting!

Why would the nurses be deciding where they picked it up, how would anyone ever know? Would they honestly be saying and blaming one single act, on a well weren't you silly doing that, now look at you way?

You're embellishing the story (if indeed they have both got Covid at all) to be I'm so right!

Not a good friend are you?

Peahead10 · 29/12/2020 08:41

People with covid can talk. I don't know how serious she is but is not on a ventilator so can speak. Or maybe my friend told the ambulance crew or maybe a Dr called to update her on her mums condition, I don't know!

Actually sorry I missed this one.

Downgrading to a 3.

This is the premature ejaculation of made up MN stories. A real shame after setting up the BS so well!

Bookworming · 29/12/2020 08:59

And your friends first thought was to tell you how right you were, you in turn had your first thought of I must tell MN how right I was.......

Where does the friend tell her how right she was? I didn't see that.

Obviously we don't know if this is true or not, but it's certainly not implausible.

In some areas of the country, more than 1 in 30 people are testing positive. And that's only people who are symptomatic and / or getting tests (I know of many symptomatic people not bothering to get tested as they don't want family members to miss work etc) so you could probably expect the true infection figure to be twice that.
