‘ You have had your time ‘ ... WTF

Hello!

Back story

When I met my now husband in 2013 I had a dark plum red hair colour ( will try to attach a pic ) around 2017 I dropped it to black then brown and now with the new year coming in feeling inspired to lose some weight and bring back that colour ..

I told him this morning over breakfast and he responded with ‘ you have had your time ‘ ... I’m 37.

Is there some kind of unsaid fashion rule regarding hair colours and age //.

Is that how he sees me ?! As someone who has had their time !!! I’m
Younger than him !

‘ You have had your time ‘ ... WTF

I think very dark hair can make you look haggard and washed out when you're older. I think you should have fun with your hair, why not - but maybe the shade would be too dark.

CaptainSandy · 20/12/2020 18:28

OP can bear that advise in mind when she's older one day then.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 20/12/2020 18:28

DP and I were together for 16 years, had DS who was 2 at the time, when one day I left the house with shoulder length brunette hair and went for a hair cut

I came home with an ash blonde pixie cut

DP went mental, asking what the fuck I thought I was playing at, getting my hair done like that at 37 years old

We're no longer together

I never thought I would type these time-honoured Mumsnet letters, but - LTB.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/12/2020 18:29

I am quite conservative in my own style and taste as I like to blend into the background and not attract attention or comments but I really love and appreciate an interesting colour or style on other people's hair (caveat: if it's done well, not a home hair dye frizzy disaster that looks like a teenager was experimenting with identity).

I do genuinely like unusual hair colours even though I think it would look daft on me so choose not to do it on myself. (it would look daft before anyone says anything - I have mad frizzy bushy curly hair)

Someone at at work is in their 60s and died their hair a pale pink colour. They are not especially trendy in their normal work clothes.
Someone else died their hair pale pink for their wedding. They both looked fab. I can't understand your DH's way of thinking. I assume by his comment that he thinks the time to look "out there" and "edgy" has passed for you. Bollocks to that! You do you, and let him be Grandad. Grin

I expected this thread to be about a visit to Santa or something like that- what an awful thing to say.

MrsKoala · 20/12/2020 18:30

Is 37 ‘older’? 😂

Hailtomyteeth · 20/12/2020 18:32

Bollocks to that. Plum your hair, get in shape and have a whale of a time. We're on a one-way street here, there's no going back. Enjoy yourself.

ThirstyGhost · 20/12/2020 18:34

@CaptainSandy

Me at 42, hair just dyed bright blue.
Love it and love your t-shirt too.

It'll look fab OP. That comment says way more about him than you. Reminds me of my dad with anything he ever said that started with the words, "I think that after a certain age women...." blah blah blah (my dad was a university professor and to be frank very much looked and dressed like one of those bearded blokes who used to present the lat night Open University telly programmes in the 1970s). Is your DH quite conservative (with a small c) normally about style and fashion?

I don't like that comment though. It's the sort of thing I'd dwell on at 3am when I can't sleep. Chuck it on the pile with the rest of the seething resentments.....

WhySoSensitive · 20/12/2020 18:35

Did you ask him what he meant?

toconclude · 20/12/2020 18:35

Died my hair yesterday pretty much that colour.

I'm 59. Your "D" H is a dick and wants telling.

Daisychainsandglitter · 20/12/2020 18:38

Your DH is wrong and I'd be really annoyed if my DH said that. I'm 36 and I've just dyed my hair bright red in an attempt to try and make myself feel festive.

AfterSchoolWorry · 20/12/2020 18:39

Plum hair is so ugly and ageing. Awful.

Speakeasy22 · 20/12/2020 18:39

64 and blonder than I've ever been.

shinynewapple2020 · 20/12/2020 18:40

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

Here's one of my artistic creations. I'm 53. Meh. I love it Smile
That's amazing !
cuppycakey · 20/12/2020 18:45

Quite.

What an arsehole. Have you posted about this dickhead before?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/12/2020 18:46

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace
I like that !

ilovepixie · 20/12/2020 18:48

I'm 52 and my hair is blue!

WeatherwaxOn · 20/12/2020 18:49

@Merryoldgoat

My 80 year old aunt currently has pink hair. She’s a retired doctor. He’s talking balls.
Fantastic - I would LOVE to see her hair!

Mine is currently bright orange, it should be red but the box dye lied. Going to go over it tomorrow to see what I can do. I'm early 50s. Haven't had natural coloured hair for years.

Lollyneenah · 20/12/2020 18:51

He would get on with my mum Grin the woman has been trying to get me to dye my hair brown and have a nice sensible bob for the last 10 years

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 20/12/2020 18:54

Don’t ask his opinion about your appearance. Approval is not his to give or decline

SimonJT · 20/12/2020 18:58

Maybe suggests its time for him to start wearing zip up cardigans.

I’m 32, this morning I bleached my hair (far too many times), so now I have white hair, tomorrow I’m adding a silver toner.

BlindMedusa · 20/12/2020 18:58

Op I've had white/silver/lilac hair since I was 23 so over a decade ago and before Game of Thrones Khaleesi and my nan constantly asked why I wanted the grey hair blue rinsed look 😂 hair colour has no age tell your Mr to put the kettle on because that piss wont boil itself. Bet you look gorge ignore him!

Allergictoironing · 20/12/2020 18:59

Currently a nice reddish auburn (well 5 inches of grey then auburn, not quite over a shoulder op). When I was about 40 I walked into my hairdressers, took him outside to look at my new bright rust red car, and asked him to match it. Stayed that colour for years, though toned it down a little when I was working in financial services.

It's like length - apparently, "older" women aren't supposed to keep their hair long. Bollocks to that!

TinkerPony · 20/12/2020 19:00

@CaptainSandy fab hair may i ask where your retro my little pony tee from?
