My Ex’s family used to get me Baylis and Hading every year. It really is shit isn’t it?!

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 20/12/2020 15:35

We do santa has been to Poundland and so it's always a mixed bag but this year I got a packet of Christmas napkins but at least they'll be used, my colleague got a Poundland packet of ribbed glow in the dark condoms 🤦🏻‍♀️

Canwecancel2020 · 20/12/2020 15:35

Although sorry to be controversial... I really can’t understand why molton brown is so expensive

Wrong move.

Everyone here loves Molton Brown.

(No idea why)

Just read your posts seriously people dont consider other people`s feelings , this year i think people from my work place were secretly pissed off that i wasnt participating because i give very good gifts and i even do abit of research on the person i am buying for , this year the Gucci lipstick is going nowhere

DreamingofGinoclock · 20/12/2020 15:41

The worst I've ever had was a salad spinner ...I was actually quite upset that someone at work thought I was that boring that I would be happy with a salad spinner Hmm

Ylvamoon · 20/12/2020 15:44

Children's book ends. Yes, I love reading, yes I have DC, nope I do not need some DIY style wooden Pooh Bear bookends. They were still in their package straight from China.

Summerstorms · 20/12/2020 15:45

@GoGadgetGo

Bayliss and Harding?

I don't get what's wrong with that? If peop;e don't know the other person, then it's a safe gift isn't it?

Mumsnet is full of snobs
Hairwizard · 20/12/2020 15:45

Colleague bought me nipple tassles years ago. She would usually buy something really nice for secret santa but that particular year she had decided 'fuck it i always get shit present so im not buying anymore nice ones'. Unfortunate change for me though.

Lobeu · 20/12/2020 15:47

What exactly is wrong with bayliss and harding? I've never given it as a gift but haven't the foggiest why it's supposed to be awful?

Isitrainingihadntnoticed · 20/12/2020 15:48

I've made a lot of effort this year. Our exchange is on Wednesday. Spent way over budget and I'm now dreading it xx

MaelyssQ · 20/12/2020 15:50

I made a massive error one year, by buying a bottle of flavoured gin for my Secret Santa. She handed it back immediately and said she was a recovering alcoholic and she couldn't risk her sobriety by having alcohol in the house. I felt awful. Since then I've done a bit of research into my Secret Santa recipient and tried to buy something they might like.

This year, my own gift is 15 individually wrapped presents from someone and I just know it's going to be Poundland products Xmas Grin

MrsGlitterSparklesHun · 20/12/2020 15:55

@GlummyMcGlummerson that's incredible. And Chris is incredible.

DilemmaADay · 20/12/2020 15:55

A bottle of that really cheap fruit flavoured echo falls wine which is about 6% and tastes like gone off sugary squash. I love a nice bottle of red or white of which you can normally buy from Aldi for under a fiver. I saw this echo falls in the shop for about £5.50 the other day which cost more than a decent bottle of red/white Blush

TidyDancer · 20/12/2020 15:55

The best one I ever saw was when the office cunt, who implied she was having an affair with someone in the office to try to wreck his marriage (his DW also works there in a different department, she didn't like the DW, that was why), got a stationery set from the Mean Girls range that said 'boo you whore' on it. The presents were all opened in front of everyone and there was a lot of sniggering. She was humiliated and deserved it.

BrumBoo · 20/12/2020 15:55

Mumsnet is full of snobs

Absolutely this. Deluded snobs at that, who think they give just the best gifts that they believe looks like they were brought and wrapped at Harrods, and therefore are entitled to some niche, thoughtful gift in return. Completely missing the point of Secret Santa (and the fact that 90% of people who happily agree to it in November have totally forgotten until the day before, and grab the nearest thing to wrap).

SS threads are some of most whiney, ungrateful, entitled threads on AIBU this time of year, and that is really saying something...

As for this, Jesus that poor woman. Did anyone try and humiliate him, considering he was the married one?
starfishmummy · 20/12/2020 16:00

@Gumbo

A couple of years ago I was working away and me and the rest of the team I was working with flew in each week and worked at hotdesks on the customer''s site. For secret santa I got given a large and heavy desk calendar. I didn't have a desk to put it on, and only travelled with a small bag of hand luggage to go in the overhead locker. The calendar went straight into the bin.
Not a secret santa but one year dh and I were gjven a desk calendar to share. We don't have a desk at home.and wondered how we were supposed to divide it between our workplaces. A six month run each or day by day?
DilemmaADay · 20/12/2020 16:00

Also a lot of gifts which have have been 'bulked out' to look more expensive then they are when I would prefer something cheap and smaller.... I dont have expensive taste!! For example i would be happy with something like a Lush bath bomb, rather than a big set of rose scented bath salts from B&M which probably cost more.

Retiremental · 20/12/2020 16:00

Love the angst from the Bayliss and Harding fans Xmas Grin
Have a set going cheap if anyone wants it ? Xmas Wink

Yes. I like the fact that everyone who receives a 'terrible' gift emphasises that their own offering was over-budget, thoughtfully chosen and beautifully wrapped. It's meant to be tasteless tat. That's kind of the point! Grin

I haven't taken part in Secret Santa for a few years. It's great - no environmental waste, no stressing about looking grateful enough for whatever random thing I might get, and no stressing about having to buy something not rubbish for whoever I pick.

Ours has a £20 budget. Not every workplace specifies tasteless tat Xmas Grin
