This was said by someone on the news:

"We just made the decision to leave based on the fact that my parents said come, and we couldn't bear the thought of no fresh air and a toddler going rogue round a small flat for the foreseeable," she said.

There are loads of us facing this exact situation and are just bloody well dealing with it.

Good for them. If more people do it, the government will know this draconian shit isn't flying anymore, and have to come up with alternatives that actually work.

doctorhamster · 20/12/2020 09:40

Yanbu op. The pictures I've seen of people packed together at london train stations have really made me cross this morning. Utter twats the lot of them.

CrotchBurn · 20/12/2020 09:42

Stop dealing with it then if it makes you so angry

ForestNymph · 20/12/2020 09:44

Good. I'm sick of this now, my patience with it has run out and I'm not prepared to sacrifice my civil liberties and my children's childhoods any longer. Fuck it.

Like what?
Anyoldname12 · 20/12/2020 09:46

Draconian Hmm the hyperbol. If Boris had the balls to actually implement “draconian” lockdowns earlier, the shit show we’re all living in at the moment wouldn’t be so bad.

DonkeyMcFluff · 20/12/2020 09:47

I blame the government. It’s obvious that if they announce restrictions are coming in, people will flee before the deadline. Better to announce restrictions starting from 12pm LAST night so it’s too late for people to leave.

FFS. Have you completely missed the fact that there's a VIRUS? Virus is passed from person to person, lockdowns work to slow the transmission.

What alternative do you propose exactly?

Brieminewine · 20/12/2020 09:48

Good for them. If they left before midnight and both sides were happy then what’s the problem?

We all have to make individual risk assessments and do what feels right. For me, as front line nhs that means deciding to stay home and not visit family despite being ‘allowed’ as I don’t want to risk infecting them but I don’t begrudge others, this year has been shit for us all.

CrotchBurn · 20/12/2020 09:48

Yeah its draconian. You want to live in an invisible prison then more fool you. The rest of us will start living rather than existing

It would have been a good idea to stop the trains running.

Exactly. How many people backing it have actually had Covid? I have. And I'd rather catch it again than live in this authoritarian dictatorship.
PizzaForOne · 20/12/2020 09:50

YABU

They are leaving in line with the timing and where they have an option that is better for them physically and mentally - it's only rational they take it.

Save your feelings and thoughts for the ones trapped in flats without outside space on their own over festive period.

middleager · 20/12/2020 09:50

No, not good for them at all.
I agree with you OP.

grapewine · 20/12/2020 09:51

Good for them. If they left before midnight and both sides were happy then what’s the problem?

This. I wouldn't want to be stuck with a toddler either, if there was an alternative.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 20/12/2020 09:54

@ForestNymph

Apart from protecting others, who are more vulnerable, do you really think dying yourself won't rather spoil your children's childhoods?

Have a look at the people who have died. There are a lot of people under 50, who were previously healthy.

Lots of people are 'sick of it', but until people are vaccinated & transmission is low enough to track & trace effectively, just DO the right thing & stay home.

Definitely! You'd have thought they'd have got a grip on that by now FFS!

This. None of this is enforceable and the government know it. They are banking on people turning on each other, rather than asking why vulnerable have not been issued with proper PPE or why the government encouraged everyone out again (but they are wearing - - cut up old t-shirts-- masks) without using the calmer summer months to train as many NHS staff as they could so they could work or assist in icu. I'm done putting my life on hold.

PS: I'm not a Covid denier. I have had Covid in March and it was shit. But I'd rather have it every year for the rest of my life, than hide in my house from a virus that is survived by over 99% of the people who contract it.

Cecily42 · 20/12/2020 09:56

YANBU

ForestNymph · 20/12/2020 09:56

It kills less than 1% of those who catch it. I'd rather take my chances and have my freedom than this half existence we currently have.

Biancadelrioisback · 20/12/2020 09:57

If I was given the choice to stay in a small flat with no outside space with a young child or form a bubble with someone who had plenty of indoor and outdoor space then I'd say it was a no brainer! Obviously depends on the other person/families circumstances and health but why suffer unnecessarily?

Tellmetruth4 · 20/12/2020 09:58

Nobody ‘fled’ London and the SE based on the restrictions only announced at 4pm yesterday.

Everybody who left yesterday was already leaving/ going back home. We also have no idea when the train station pictures were actually taken.

You can’t just pack up, rock up to the train station without a pre booked ticket and find somewhere to stay in 8 hours at this time of year.

I’ve seen Hancock is on the news trying to blame Londoners for spreading the virus all over the country even though London was in Tier 2 only this week. But playing to the gallery by fuelling anti London sentiment always seems to work on some.

GreyMary23 · 20/12/2020 09:59

YANBU OP but unfortunately there is a massive amount of selfish people out there who believe their needs and wants trump everything. It's so depressing to see the sheer disregard and selfishness but that's the world we live in now. It constantly makes me feel like what's the point in us trying to do the right thing when so many others continue to do as they please?

The pp who said 'what's the problem' - well it's not rocket science is it? People crammed in a London station, not social distancing and probably shipping covid off to various parts of the country. That's the problem.

Aalvarino · 20/12/2020 09:59

I dont think the escapees are terrible people at all but stuck inside? Ruining childhoods?? Really...! Get a sense of proportion. You can still go to the park or out in the fresh air. Childhoods are ruined by death, serious disease, crushing poverty, things like that. Not a year of half-assed restrictions.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/12/2020 10:00

Where are people getting the 99% survive from? They haven't released figures yet?
