I’m not a Tory voter but do you think being known as he party “that stole Christmas” is going to finish off the conservatives?

So much faffing and changing of direction - how will anyone trust them again?

No, pretty much every country is facing Christmas being different. It’s not the governments fault people, they and the scientists are acting on what they think is best. Christmas is one day, far better we have a future.

But the scientists have been saying it for weeks, it's only a couple of days since the PM was deriding the opposition leader for suggesting exactly this action should be taken.

Theres still five days to shop in and frankly in a normal year the supermarkets are rammed dusk to dawn so it’ll be no different.

The thing with this, is its a not a normal year, if we were just dealing with Covid or just dealing with Brexit than I would agree with you, but we are dealing with both and the fact is lorries are stuck in Calais, so shelves are going to start being emptied. Added to this, people might not have budgeted for doing a full Christmas meal. With so many people becoming unemployed every penny counts and relying on getting a meal from somewhere else, then suddenly having to find the money to feed yourself and your family is going to be tough.

sashagabadon · 20/12/2020 15:14

No. In 6 months it’ll be a distant memory

MorganKitten · 20/12/2020 15:19

I hope so, but we know people will still vote for them.

Smallgoon · 20/12/2020 15:31

I know a Tory (one!) She admits they haven't handled it well and is very annoyed, certainly not a fan of Boris, but thinks Labour are far worse. I don't know why, she never gives a straight answer.

Prob a bigot.

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 20/12/2020 15:34

I hope it does but I doubt it. And tbh I’d have hoped it would be one of the other numerous other horrible shitty things they’ve done in the last year alone that would finish them off.

yikesanotherbooboo · 20/12/2020 15:40

I met someone ( a stranger to me) this week who asked how I thought Boris Johnson was doing in the current circs. I am a doctor. I said not well, obvs... he replied that it would be worse if it was Jeremy Corbin. He then asked me what I thought of Keir to which I replied that he was intelligent and a good details person which might make him good in this situation. He replied, 'I agree he is just the same as Corbin!'
It quite shocked me for a moment that he could have so little discernment but I have met many people with dyed in the wool beliefs whether it be over Brexit or the moral rightness of the left.
We have a great example hanging over us at the moment of how logic does not rule how we vote so I'm afraid that I am not convinced that this is the end of the tories.

OliStryder · 20/12/2020 15:43

No because the government are doing the best they can with the information they have.
The situation we find ourselves in is due to those that don’t choose to follow what is being asked of them

Requinblanc · 20/12/2020 16:02

The end of Boris, that's for sure The knives will be out soon. I think they are waiting for the Brexit deal (or no deal) and then the party will start plotting him out.

If there is a no deal Brexit and the economy is destroyed further, then the Tories might be finished...a deal of sort will save them as Labour is still not that attractive as an option unfortunately.

didireallysaythat · 20/12/2020 16:17

Do you think anyone else in the Tory party wants to be associated with the covid and Brexit fiascos? They'll let Boris take the hit and when things pick up then they'll edge him out

Katyppp · 20/12/2020 16:30

I find it inexplicable that seemingly intelligent people are unable to grasp the concept of a fast-changing situation.
There is a lot of examples of being wise with hindsight, but I have yet to hear anyone either on here or in the media explain how they would have handled things if they had the information that was available AT THE TIME.
Two weeks ago, the government would not have known how the new variant would spread so quickly. Should they have based their Christmas rules on something that was unknown?

They knew on Wednesday when denying it. Look at what members of his own party are saying today. He knew but waited until recess had started. Deliberately.
OhWhyNot · 20/12/2020 16:49

Of course it won’t be (though have read that a number if time’s on MN over the years)

The reason the are the most successful political party ever is because they adapt

May not win the next election but it would be down to going back on their word yesterday (which I think was the right thing to do)

LadyRoughDiamond · 20/12/2020 17:14

Nah, where there are people getting rich on low-taxation and low-regulation industry, there’ll be a Tory party.

Bluethrough · 20/12/2020 17:17

It won't because who else is there to vote for? Stammer? If he'd been in charge we'd still be in the first lockdown

Are we any better off by relaxing restrictions quite so much? having EOTHO ? a shite TnT system? and two additional lockdowns?

Perhaps if we'd kept up with some restrictions, we would nt now have a new virulent strain that originated in Kent, which has now spread around the globe.

Bottom line is we have 70k CV deaths, one of the worst (per capita) rates in the world.

Moutarde · 20/12/2020 17:22

@Crystalclair

I hope not. Yeah, they've mess up on some things - but no more or less than ANY other government would have.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
They will still get my vote.

Bollocks.

Look around the world at other nations, maybe start with New Zealand.

They've been an utter shitshow, indecisive, rudderless and downright dangerous.

No govt would be perfect in this situation, but ours have been spectacular in their ineptness.

You vote for who you like, obvs, but don't try and sugar coat this mess.

tttigress · 20/12/2020 17:25

Hope it is the end of Boris.

Tory backbenchers seem to be the only ones opposing this lockdown insanity.

SeaWitchly · 20/12/2020 17:25

Too many fools taken in by media propaganda unfortunately. And with bad long term memories - the Tories excel in meaningless 3 word slogans which are lapped up by the dumbed down masses... So sadly I do not feel it is the end of the Tories although it should be.

Kendodd · 20/12/2020 17:40

If only!
I have very little doubt that the English public will continue to vote for them even when they leave shattered, broken country after enriching themselves and their friends with their dodgy contacts, poorly delivered. Tory austerity killed 100,000 people over the last ten years, filled the land with food banks and was rewarded by the adoring public with an 80 seat majority. I despair.

Madbengalmum · 20/12/2020 17:45

Maybe end of Boris, but not the Tories. All of the parties are poorly represented at the moment, and Kier Starmer is way of being the answer to all our prayers.

Gobbycop · 20/12/2020 17:46

They're all useless cunts.

The next lot will be equally hopeless, whoever they are.

Redburnett · 20/12/2020 17:48

If only ....
